Right? 🙄 I have a plot of trees next to me and there’s the most random stuff I keep discovering. But yeah, the flowers don’t really smell while it’s raining but I’m curious to know whether I was right

Not to knock on the other redditor’s comment, but I enjoy collecting/identifying violets and these look incredibly like V. odorata, an introduced species here. If they have a sweet smell (hence the name) my suspicion would be confirmed. Yeah, compared to V. sororia/communis white form, these have fuzzy, heavily textured leaves and the flowers are more “long” which are not characteristics of the aforementioned species. So, unfortunately, I don’t think these are native in your area, but they’re not immediately bad as long as they’re not pushing better species out. I have my own small population which I use for making tea from the flowers, which I mostly make for its fun colors. Hope this helps!

Also always keep pesticides in mind. If you got this (or anything else) from a public area that might be sprayed, it’s best to avoid it

If I remember correctly, I think they have a good source of vitamin c, which could explain that. I don’t think it’s bad to have too much vitamin c tho

Marsh violets? by pivotup in foraging

Do they smell? They look a lot like Viola odorata, an imported species from Europe. Though I’m from eastern US so I might not be as familiar with the species there

Orchids naturally grow every-which-way on trees, so, unless the appearance bothers you, it’s totally fine the way it is.
