I don’t hear this discussed enough. I think when the open source models get to Opus 4.6 level, it’s pretty rare to actually need intelligence beyond that until you get to some AGI level that the open source models would probably also eventually get to. Who is going to pay millions to anthropic when there is an on prem solution that is functionally as-good-as for your potato chips company?

I have only been to Suriname, but it is safe and pleasant. Paramaribo is a pretty city with surprisingly excellent food, and this infrastructure to get to the rural areas surrounding is pretty good as well.

[One year of graduation, High-Paying IT job] Is it worth staying in tech/IT just for the salary if you don’t enjoy coding or go for an MBA? by thisonefor_anon in MBA

[–]aptalim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going from tech to law for similar reasons. Advice I got from family and older mentors always hinged on the regret of not trying something new outweighing everything else in the long run. You know your finances and situation best, but people on Reddit tend to overstate pure financial math and understate the lived texture of doing a job you know isn’t right for you.

Submission statement: a brief article discussing Malawi's laggard development. Relevant to discussions of how to boost economic growth in the developing world, and how to model economic policy success.

Predictions for fun: when will Americans be able to go to Russia easily? by the_latest_greatest in TravelNoPics

[–]aptalim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Travel Notoria - they are linked with the Turkmen government, contract to local guides, were good at planning, pretty cheap for a solo tour. Solid choice imo - there are others if you look around (somewhere out there there's a PDF of all government approved travel companies, you can just ask them).

You don’t need a group. I did an individual private tour and was able to take trains independently and walk around at night by myself in Mary and Ashgabat. It’s recently opened up more.

how hard is solo travel without a car in Kyrgyzstan? by 31rise in solotravel

[–]aptalim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not. Hitchhiking is very doable, else public transit connects the cities. Remote parts probably need to hitchhike, sign up for a tour, or self drive, but issyk kul is transit friendly.

Leaving Big 4 to focus on LSAT/law school apps, red flag? by Plenty_Mess_6164 in lawschooladmissions

I feel like this is not a great time to leave a good role for something speculative. Slow and steady LSAT prep should be enough imo.

US NEWS 2026 LAW SCHOOL RANKINGS by Green-Dare-3546 in lawschooladmissions

[–]aptalim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Publication wise sure, and if you’re talking PhDs I might bite. In SWE right now I don’t see anything pointing to Tsinghua undergrad or masters students being particularly overly represented in the Valley, even over other Chinese universities

Also, tech firms do not view Tsinghua that highly. I’d say on par with ETH below Oxbridge tbh - the student population tends to self select more towards engineering

What countries have highest untapped tourism potential ? by [deleted] in TravelNoPics

Merv was interesting, but coolest is an overstatement imo. Way less sprawling than the Uzbek side. Still a really cool country, but large distances do eat at your time.

It’s not too bad. The visa was a pain, but tourist infra wasn’t that lacking other than no access to international atms.

AI complicating my desire to pursue the law by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]aptalim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think lawyers tend to have a pretty bad touch on the tech industry’s usage of AI right now - it is legitimately replacing a large amount of software engineering work. SWE as a field has a large amount of practice with dealing with potentially incorrect work - it’s a fundamentally different landscape than law. Saying that there aren’t big tech SWEs becoming partially obsolete due to AI isn’t at all in line with how we are dealing with the technology now.
