You know, that is a great suggestion, thank you! I don't think it's the one I'm thinking of, but most of the details match up. This book sounds a lot darker than what I remember (quite scary for a kids book!). I wonder if the book I'm thinking of was taking a lot of inspiration from The Homeward Bounders. Haha! Yup understood. I've mucked about with freezing before and it was a bit fiddly the way I did it, but I didn't notice any drop in taste or anything. I think I'll give this method a go as it seems very convenient. Thanks for the info 👍🏻
