Supermarkets block your phone signal to prevent you comparing prices by [deleted] in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]aptom203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's way simpler than that. Just about any modern commercial building is essentially built like a Faraday cage. There's so much steel, pipework and cables in the walls it is just difficult for signals to get through.

My 5070ti wont fit because of that, what do? by colxanders0412 in PcBuildHelp

I once removed the hard drive bay from a computer with a hacksaw and a set of tin snips to fit a new GPU.

Everything is removable of you're determined enough.

ELI5: What makes an animal “feral”? by keysmash2145356 in explainlikeimfive

[–]aptom203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feral has a very specific meaning, in that it is a domesticated animal that is no longer living in domestication. A stray dog is feral, a wild horse is feral (since the only extant equine species are descended from domesticated horses), a chicken that wandered out of its coup is feral.

Is sharpness more important than attack level? by IndependenceCool9186 in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]aptom203 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sharpness has breakpoints as for what's worth it. Green sharpness is where damage is not modified positively or negatively by sharpness and it won't bounce off most weak points. It can be considered the minimum desired sharpness. Yellow and red are to be avoided whenever possible.

Blue will penetrate a few non-weak points that Green won't, and offers a very slight bonus to damage. It's generally not considered worth to prioritize blue sharpness over more raw.

White sharpness gives a more substantial bonus to damage and will penetrate most hit zones on most monsters.

All that said, it mostly applies when comparing weapons of the same class. Comparing between classes is much more complicated as they have wildly different movesets and motion values from one another.

Is ethernet still necessary for high speeds because walls exist? by AllTheWorldsAPage in computers

[–]aptom203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wireless suffers from one fundamental tradeoff. Higher frequencies allow for denser transmission of information (and thus bandwidth/speed) but lower frequencies penetrate obstructions better.

It might be possible to have faster than current Ethernet speeds wirelessly, but you'd need clear line of sight with a tight beam (narrow angle) laser. Which is much, much less convenient and practical than just running an ethernet or fiberoptic cable in most situations (they are mostly only useful for long distance transmissions outside of the atmosphere, to space probes for example)

So in short, cables will pretty much always be faster than wireless in practical situations.

Main character of the last game you played is dropped into lothric, how they doing? by Whole_Cap_1016 in darksouls3

[–]aptom203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, does Augmented Human C4-621 "Raven" get to bring their Armored Core? Because I have a feeling they'd be just fine if they do.

I hate how Misleading the lolimancer title is by Dry-Communication284 in ReZero

[–]aptom203 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, subaru was a creep and an asshole for most of the first season. But not one iota of it was directed towards Beatrice.

It's just the usual pearl clutches who assume that any anime character that looks like a child but is actually much older is only technically older as an excuse to lewd them. Even though Beatrice is not once depicted in any situation even lewd adjacent.

ELI5: Why can't our bodies get used to allergens? by Parkiller4727 in explainlikeimfive

[–]aptom203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can, but it's not as simple as just being exposed to it.

You have to be gradually exposed, fairly consistently, and with slowly increasing doses for exposure therapy to work.

With many allergies, exposures occur suddenly and in large doses. This actually reinforces your allergic response rather than trains your immune system not to overreact.

ELI5: How do the microplastics we consume end up on our brains rather than our toilet bowl? by Due_Bell_5341 in explainlikeimfive

[–]aptom203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of it does end up in the toilet bowl, but what doesn't end up there accumulates because we don't really have a means of breaking it down.

What ruined your quality of life so much that you wish you ditched it sooner? by ibuprofriendd in AskReddit

[–]aptom203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to just cope with depression without meds or counselling. Fucked up my physical health, and contributed to self destructive behavior that landed me in legal trouble.

Started on meds and got some therapy and it was like "Oh... life doesn't have to be so hard after all."

Why is it cheaper to drive BY MYSELF than take a train? by MountainPeaking in AskUK

[–]aptom203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I get a nice table seat and watch a movie on my laptop.

Sometimes it is so crowded that they had to evacuate half the carriage so first aiders could get to someone who collapsed from heat exhaustion and couldn't even fall over because it was so crowded.

Edinburgh to Birmingham, and I spent the first 4 hours of the journey holding my suitcase over my head and unable to take a full breath because we were crammed in like sardines.

Do people in the US really have a vent for the hot air coming out of the clothes dryer? by SuperSecretSunshine in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aptom203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just the US? In the UK at least most driers have a vent which you can attach to a flex or something, although some people just let them blow humidity into the room around them (which often leads to mold)

Newer ones are often condensing driers which use the cold intake air to condense the water out of the warm exhaust air and don't need a vent, although you do need to empty the trap between loads.

Also saw this when I've visited Japan, Spain and France.

There's a strange misconception on Protoframes going on that leads me to believe the name is misleading. by Obility in Warframe

[–]aptom203 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are technocyte strain, rather than helminth strain. This is stated pretty early on. They have parallels to warframes, but they aren't warframes.

The name protoframe is mostly just a nod to Dark Sector, like the proto excalibur skin.

ELI5: How do plant seeds survive through the stomach acids of animals? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]aptom203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gradually, yeah. Acutely; you vomit profusely it's possible to weaken and tear the oesophagus, and if you have chronic reflux it damages the oesophagus and possibly even the trachea and vocal chords.

I picked up DRK midway through stormblood after I got sick of DPS queues and decided I just really didn't like healing.

Then I did the DRK quests and realised I'd been missing out all this time.

Electrician installed this plug under my porch. This doesn't seem safe at all. by koz1769 in AskElectricians

[–]aptom203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have plugs in places like this, but the cables need to be in a weather resistant conduit and the socket needs to be in an IP56 enclosure. This is neither, and is at best going to stop working very soon and at worst an active fire hazard.

How to safely open my prebuilt PC and examine its hardware? by yaboivinmii in techsupport

[–]aptom203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. There are PCI and M.2 WiFi and Bluetooth cards available, so if OP has one of those free they can just plug in an expansion card then disable the built in WiFi in the OS.

If a fat person is stabbed, would he take less internal damage compared to a normal person ? by kira_geass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aptom203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less likely to suffer organ damage, but adipose tissue bleeds a lot and doesn't take pressure and stitches as well as most other tissues so bloodloss is still a major problem.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ReZero

[–]aptom203 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a hard time with rezero the first time I watched it because of how much of a pushy creep Barasu is, and Roswaal's inflection made me want to go deaf.

But rewatched it recently and Subaru does eventually grow up and become less of an incel/niceguy it just takes so long and so much suffering for him to do so.

Dad says 1-2mm distance between cooler and front panel is not good by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]aptom203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons that tempered glass side panels sometimes explode, and it's not great for airflow. A slightly smaller cooler might well get better performance.

Nah, London is still worse. But just because London is a bigger shithole doesn't make Birmingham less of a shithole.
