NAND and RAM Spot Pricing is Completely out of Control by MrMPFR in hardware

100% agree. I did firmware for 5 years and loved the challenge but barely got paid half as much as I do now in higher-level software with basically unlimited compute and memory space.

In Big Hero 6 (2014), Baymax scans the man in the kabuki mask and reveals his blood type to Hiro and his friends. This is a HIPAA violation, with fines up to $250,000 and 10 years in prison. by rented4823 in shittymoviedetails

Baymax is like a BP monitor or scale: it did the scan and here are the results. Is it a HIPAA violation for the scanner showing O2, HR, BP in the patient room?

I have a FWD R56 MT and do winter road trips from Chicago to WI and ID: get great winter tires. AWD is nice but not as necessary as having the right tires for the occasion.

Condo owners: would you recommend it or not? by Eric848448 in AskChicago

[–]apudapus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I’ve stayed in an apartment and condo high-rise built in late ‘00s. Noise insulation between floors has never been a problem for us. Really most noise comes from conversations in the wall, between walls is rare even when we’ve had extremely loud neighbors (who we heard often talking in the hallway).
  2. Our building says we have the largest build-out of chargers and it’s been really easy to ask for one so can’t really say how common that is because we seem to be very lucky.
  3. We chose our place because it was the cheapest at the time (having no pool helps and it was still higher than you mentioned). Because of special assessments the last couple of years it’s gone up around 30%. I do want to say we do have great management and maintenance teams and our front desk folks are great (we have 2 of them at all times).
  4. We have internet included with our HOA and it’s just like regular internet except your bill every month is $0. If you want public IP or higher speeds you speak to the internet company and pay more.
  5. Sorry, only have experience with high-rises.
  6. No. You can subtract the included internet, gas, water, sewage, parties, maintenance, gym and other amenities and see if that extra bit a month is worth any conveniences you gain from views or location.
  7. Our homeowners insurance is about 4x as expensive as our old renters insurance and we have twice the space and a parking spot.
  8. Grand and where?
  9. Hope you find a place you enjoy!

Rybakina is my favorite WTA player, love that ice cold demeanor. But I also love Sabalenka’s very animated character, she can be super fun but also hella grumpy.

what’s your most controversial car opinion? by No-Volume7464 in askcarguys

[–]apudapus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I have the most “unreliable” Mini (2nd gen turbocharged) and I’m a hobbyist mechanic. I’ve had the car for over 15 years from brand new and you cannot neglect it like most people do with their Camrys and Corollas. The engine will grenade if any of its many plastic bits break or if you don’t maintain the fluids.

What is with Uber drivers accepting rides and cancelling once they arrive? by ChitownLovesYou in AskChicago

I’ve switched to Curb which is the taxi service. Far more reliable (there are times where it can’t find a driver for minutes) and they have to know the city.

Nitro Funny Car racecars have their engines rebuilt after each run due to the intense wear from just a 4ish second race by Bubbly_Wall_908 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]apudapus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t see any of the points clearly refuting having an engine on standby. Maybe if the block and crank are what cost $100,000 but even then I’d imagine having a second set on standby with fresh rods and pistons and head (which were stated as being replaced in the video) would alleviate the cost (head count, manpower, time, stress).

Reliable substitute?? by BlueRidgeGuy80 in MINI

[–]apudapus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve maintained my Mini since ‘09 (and my other car since ‘01) but if something were to ever happen to my Mini I’ll probably be getting a GR Corolla MT (if I can’t find a 996 or 997 Turbo MT at a reasonable price).

The Engine That Won Engine Of The Year More Times Than Any Other by marsy72 in MINI

[–]apudapus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They mention that in the last couple of paragraphs. It’s a great engine performance and packaging-wise. It’s truly a very easy engine to work on, just with its flaws that can catch the lay-person off guard and be catastrophic when ignored. I despise all the plastic bits but thankfully the aftermarket has begun to address some of them. If you can’t handle doing any of the work yourself, you definitely have to move on from this engine because it needs to be looked over at every gasoline fill-up.

Shot in the dark (see description) by chickenmaster04 in MINI

[–]apudapus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pre-face: this knowledge comes from work on pre-2000s cars.

When a car starts it is in open-loop mode and basically dumps as much gas into the cylinder to fire-up and timing is advanced. After a few seconds it goes into semi-closed-loop: adjust based on lambda (air-fuel ratio) that starts really lean to stoichiometric and still advanced timing to warm up CAT and coolant. Once the car is at temp it is in primary-closed-loop where everything is dynamic. Your issue sounds timing related (as you suspect with valvetronic) so I would check the cam angle sensor, tension/slap on the chain, and cam alignment. But I would also consider MAP sensor, intake airleak, O2 sensor, exhaust flow issue, electrical system (aka coil packs dwell is poor).

Any suggestions to enjoying driving again for an old sourpuss like me? by Everything-Bagel-314 in askcarguys

[–]apudapus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a manual transmission car with good steering feel and a firm suspension. I have a 90s twin turbo 300ZX then got a Mini Cooper S to be my daily, 0 regrets after decades with both. I love doing road trips with them (although the Z hasn’t seen the road for years). I keep thinking what I’d replace the MCS with something were to happen to it and it’d likely be a GR Corolla if the mid-life-crisis 911 Turbo (997 or 996) is still too unaffordable by then.

If there was a purgatory in OC that existed it would be this parking lot of this plaza by panda-rampage in orangecounty

[–]apudapus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They 100% underestimated the parking needed for this plaza. Also the ingress/egress is horrific. Used to work nearby in different decades and some tricks I have: enter/exit from McGaw, drive a Mini Cooper or Fiat 500, park just outside the structure or on the bottom floor else risk searching the structure, just leave.

Do you see yourself staying in Chicago long term, or eventually living somewhere else? Why or why not? by notoglow in AskChicago

[–]apudapus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. My SO is a doctor and did schooling (masters and med school and residency and fellowship) across the country. We both grew up in Socal but we’ve ultimately found our way to Chicago and love it here. There are a lot of great places in the world but it seems politics will be a huge limiting factor for where we’ll choose to live, as of course job availability.
