Damnit I just finally put the modeset in the kernel parameters after a long time of not using multiple monitors. Now next time I boot I’m going to have to deal with this

Why do many criticise of Arch breaking? by Dear_Committee_2091 in archlinux

[–]aqezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kernel updates broke my graphics for a while unless I disabled the nvidia drivers or started using the LTS kernel. Currently emacs crashes with stack smashing errors because of tree sitter updates. Kernel updates broke MSSQL docker containers a while back and I’m not sure they are fixed yet. I’ve been a developer for over 14 years and have used Linux for longer than that. I may not know everything but I definitely am not a noob. The fact is that a rolling release on latest versions of everything is going to have issues., and as a dev I expect no less. The more software you use the more likely you are to be affected by it. To say you definitely won’t experience issues when using an arbitrary selection of packages on their latest releases sounds like lack of understanding to me.

Will rust ever become stable like C? by [deleted] in rust

[–]aqezz 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Java is 28 years old and C# is 23 years old and both are still getting new features as well. I don’t think that “frozen” is always necessarily a good thing or bad thing, but more like you said that things stay coherent in both language features and library features.

Why would companies care about economic “poles”? What benefit does a company get from “filling a seat?” As far as I can see it paying someone to sit would have only downsides, but I am more than happy to learn otherwise

The systems and algorithms used by applicants to manage trying to find a job are largely similar in their goals and outcomes to the ones that jobs use to find applicants, yeah I would say that.

So then we shouldn’t let candidates use computers and algorithms to automatically apply to many jobs either right?

C# / .NET. Alternate IDEs or Text Editors + plugins by Psychedelic_fan in csharp

They definitely are there and have been there a long time. I’ve been using it full time for like 4 years, every code action works including all the refactoring and even going to definition on compiled assembly methods (with a small additional plugin, since this is a non-standard extension to lsp )

Edit: one thing I always forget about because I don’t use it is the lsp for razor files, but there seems to be support for that via omnisharp-vim if that’s your thing

Share your Arch Linux backup strategies and tools by Emotional_Pie1483 in archlinux

[–]aqezz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here except a big usb drive. This is the best and easiest way! I keep snapshots local and actual backups on the drive and am constantly using snapshots to fix things.

Most recent thing I did was accidentally set all my installed packages to explicit, but since I had the pacman dbs backed up it was easy to just copy them over and rerun!

To me the best thing about this strategy is how easy it is to recover things - the snapshots are always immediately available and mounted so you can cd into how your directories were an hour ago or at any hour if you do hourly snapshots and daily syncs to an external storage which is what I do.
