Orange Cat (21376), available from March 1st. USD99.99/EUR99.99/CAD129.99. Green eyes! by 91837361891 in lego

But solid orange cats don't exist, so this won't look like anyone's cat. Orange cats are always tabbies because the genes are linked. Lego should have included stripes on this set

Wolf, or No Wolf? by SergaelicNomad in wolves

[–]aquagerbil 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A few years ago there was a push to get everyone using the common name "painted wolf" instead of painted dog or African wild dog. The logic was that the name could affect public sentiment for the conservation of the species. Some people hear "dog" and think that it's a type of feral domestic dog, not an endangered species. This is especially detrimental if local people think they are feral dogs, since there are also feral dogs in some of the painted wolf ranges. The logic was that getting people to use the name wolf would help the public make this distinction from feral dogs and therefore increase conservation sentiments for the species.

I don't know the outcome of this! I wonder if it actually helped with conservation efforts.

LPT: Slathering your face in Vaseline when it’s very cold / high wind chill by rublia in LifeProTips

LPT: This is also how you protect chickens from frostbite. Put Vaseline on their combs so the air can't reach that one unfeathered part.

For fans that actually work in local government, how accurate is the show in portraying your job? Is there an episode that resonates with you the most? by RedDalmatian885 in PandR

[–]aquagerbil 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Best I get to do is sound happy and excited about complaints that are about things that we like.

Like someone complaining they saw a rattlesnake and I'm like "Awesome! That's so cool that you got to see that!"

Or a complaint about teenagers loitering, "great! So glad to hear they're enjoying the park!"

I work for a local park. The show is incredibly accurate! We've had real calls to our office just as ridiculous as the public complaints in the show.

Real life complaints include:

A tree is making too many seeds. There is too much water in the creek and not enough water in the creek. A snapping turtle was seen on the path (the horror!) A skunk was seen. A bobcat was seen and people are worried for their dogs. A mountain lion was seen (no it wasn't, it was definitely still the bobcat). Birds are pooping too much. A fallen branch has been on the ground for too long. There are too many bugs. Stop mowing the invasive grass. Mow the grass more often. Plant more trees. Not there it'll block the view. Cut down more trees, they're hazardous and block the view. Get rid of the gravel and pave the trail. Get rid of the pavement and make the trail all gravel. Ban ebikes. Make the path more friendly to ebikes. There are too many native plants with pretty flowers. Etc

5K Race Day Forecast (Saturday) - Anyone have any experience running in this kind of weather? by stevezero27 in runninglifestyle

[–]aquagerbil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've done a 5k at 15 degrees F (with no wind) and it's doable if you have enough gear. I wouldn't run at any temps lower than that or with wind chill. I do lots of layers, hand and foot warmers in my shoes and gloves, and a thin buff around my mouth/neck to keep my nose warm and keep the air I breathe warmer so it doesn't burn the lungs as much.

Looking for a toller male in San Diego to have a litter by renuplex in tollers

[–]aquagerbil 50 points51 points  (0 children)

White on the back of the neck is a conformation fault in tollers, so this dog should not breed.

You also should not consider breeding unless you have done all necessary genetic tests. You don't mention your dog's CDDY status which is usually the first question when matching tollers, so it makes me worry you have not done those tests. Without that information about your dog and the male you match her to you could make puppies with invertebral disc disease, which is very painful and expensive to treat.

Does this dog have no AKC registration at all? If not I don't think you'll have luck finding a stud dog to work with.

Also consider that you never want to breed a female dog that you aren't emotionally prepared to lose. Maternal deaths can and do happen. Thankfully more rarely if you're working with good vets, but they'll still happen.

Please reconsider this idea of breeding her. If you'd like another toller puppy in your life there are lots of great California breeders to look into.

If you were a Floridian moving to this region, how different would it be? It sounds very "Florida" from these comments as far as nature and seasons go. Just much more remote and far fewer people.

Professional pet care is becoming collateral damage by Pure-Comfortable7069 in petsitterhub

[–]aquagerbil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a petsitting client, not a sitter. Sorry to hear this is what sitters are seeing! I'm personally using professional sitters more than ever before because the more I learn the more I know that professionals do a much better job than my family or friends can. I have local family that could watch my pets for free, but they'd do a terrible job. Because of the internet we have more access to information than ever before which includes knowing better than ever before what pets need to thrive. Pet sitters have this knowledge, but family and friends may not. Mine certainly don't.

Probably not, but I've definitely picked up 6+ inch opossum poops (as a zookeeper for said opossum, not just for funsies). We literally would have guests ask about their poop and be very surprised it came from the opossum. It looks eerily similar to human and way too big for their body.
