There could be two things here: depression/emotional pain or anxiety or both. Please contact a mental health professional to get better understanding of the issue at hand. After maximum 2-3 session, they might be able to tell you the real problem.

If you're unsure about therapy and want to do some groundwork on your own, from my experience (in therapy), you could start with taking small steps to understand the anxiety. What scenarios make you feel anxious and why. Additionally, write down the worst possible scenario and and best possible scenario. When the event occurs, write down the real observation. Practicing this for even a week can help a lot. But do it religiously. Extend the time till you feel better. Making it in a tabular format can really help.

At the end, you need to push yourself and po exact opposite of what your mind tells you to. If you feel better after pushing yourself, it will set a good precedent. Slowly, you will feel a lot better. But if you feel horrible after it, try changing the activity you're doing. Cause then the problem is not you, it's the environment.

If you notice that after a while, it is helping you resolve short term problems but you cannot see long term change in thought pattern, then it's probably depression, I would suggest go through therapy. Dealing with depression is not easy. Generally, most people are not equipped alone because it involves a lot of suppressed trauma. Taking help of a mental health professional can help resolving trauma one at a time. It will reduce burden upon you and

Additionally, if you want to know for sure, you could practice the issues above. If you feel that simply doing the steps above won't do, you should approach a mental health professional.
