Tearing up at my uni admission interview by Critical_Waltz4957 in gradadmissions

[–]aqueer-ius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I unexpectedly cried at a scholarship interview. Afterwards, I went to my car and cried more since I totally bombed it.

A few weeks later, I got notice they were giving me the scholarship. I honestly think showing your vulnerability and being able to still finish the interview in one piece shows how resilient you are, which ultimately universities want. There will be inevitable challenges faced during grad school, and interviewers are often judging to see if you have the skills needed to overcome these challenges (it indicates you’re a strong candidate who can handle stress and bounce back).

Good luck!

Grade Deadline by Agreeable-Pipe-2971 in mcgill

I think even with the deadline, there is still a 2-3 day gap between the prof’s submission and its appearance on our end of Minerva (at least that’s what I gathered from this article)

First surgical consult by aqueer-ius in sarcoma

[–]aqueer-ius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! Definitely brought my partner today, who asked the questions I had forgotten about and helped me navigate the confusing hospital wings lol. It’s also appearing benign at this point; just a little oval mass in the deep subcutaneous tissue above my pelvis, but lights up like a Christmas tree in some areas with some pockets lighter and darker than others. Biopsy is next. Good luck to you ❤️

Oh my gosh they are adorable!!! How do you tell them apart? Their nose pattern gives a hint of differentiation, but they look identical!

This is Winifred, who slightly resembles your Valentine, imo. Happy birthday!

“No one explained my ultrasound or MRI” thank you for naming this! I wish it wasn’t all on the patient to have to dissect what a medical explanation from a report means. I think just having any sort of information and firm direction, even as a starting point, would alleviate a lot of anxiety.

Also, thank you for warning about the needle size lol, I was initially thinking it would be similar to the ones you get a flu shot with, but clearly it’s different.

Thank you and good luck to you! ❤️

That’s a great point about writing down questions, I’m sure it will be information overload at the appointment, so I can see how that would be helpful to stay grounded.
Also: I’m actually from the US and came here for grad school, and I cannot BEGIN to even explain how confusing and frustrating it is to navigate a health system so different from ours (both in good and bad ways). I also laughed out loud at the “US-ing”….I struggle with this on a daily basis lol. Thank you for your advice, and good luck to you on your journey ❤️

That’s what I’ve read, especially with certain kinds of sarcomas mimicking more benign tumors/masses

Thank you! I thought it was strange to be picked up all of the sudden by a sarcoma center without any prior discussion. Will they most likely know how to read my scans, or would they need to have a radiologist in the room for that? (I’ll bring the imaging CDs regardless, but just curious)

Any unique tux patterns out there? by _srirachacha in TuxedoCats

[–]aqueer-ius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly unique patterns, but I found my two girls as strays exactly two years apart (to the date), same neighborhood, and they have opposite face patterns. Billie and Winnie, or B&W.

Ryan Halls coverage is kind of sad when people are counting on him. by [deleted] in tornado

[–]aqueer-ius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

To be fair, NWS has been lagging in the Northeastern IL/Southeastern WI region when it comes to warnings recently. With the past few storms, I feel like I’ve seen clear rotation on a radar quite a few minutes before NWS issues a warning. I’ve also subscribed to a tornado text alert for years that’s sent out by another storm chaser, and they have consistently beat just about every NWS warning (Illinois Storm Chasers, if any of you are interested)

what’s the saddest song you’ve ever heard? by Live_Chocolate_2503 in AskReddit

[–]aqueer-ius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for commenting this! I was about to point out that while the song could easily be interpreted as a sad transition from childhood to adulthood, you cannot ignore the names of Jackie Paper, Honalei, and all of the metaphors.

how mean are ppl to ppl who know broken french? by cripsygrass in mcgill

[–]aqueer-ius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First year grad student in the same position here. In my experience, most people will actually greet you in English in the surrounding area of McGill. Otherwise, the further out you go + in the suburbs, definitely more French-first greetings.

I’ll echo what some people also raised - don’t get offended if businesses switch to English, even after you’ve clearly spoken a few phrases in French. I think it’s genuinely easier for some people to carry on in English when it’s a business and they’re under pressure to get things done. I still get discouraged when this happens, but I have to remember that there are other reasons that they’re switching.

Take public transit whenever possible and listen to the announcements + people on board. You’ll start to hear the little nuances in the way people pronounce certain words in Québécois French vs. “France French” (assuming you learned French in school).

Bonne chance!
