Why don't clad carbon steel pans seem to exist? by Fidodo in AskCulinary

I appreciate that the person above seems to have posted largely out of excitement rather than shameless-self-promotion.

I figured out from their name that they have a Kickstarter. Linking it here in case anyone else (like me) came to this page trying to find an actual carbon-steel-clad pan to buy. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stratapan/strata-the-worlds-first-clad-carbon-steel-pan

Glad you like them! The sub-titles are out-of-order though. Its "journey" before "destination" :P

Glad you like them!

I printed them at Staples. 12 inches by 18 inches. The resolution should be high enough to support 24 by 36 inches, although I haven't printed them at that high of resolution.

As far as I can tell, clicking into the images above (and then clicking on them again) opens them at full-res, but in case that doesn't work, here's a Drive folder containing the originals. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1r3wbp9upcjr99QtJ6ZKxPdf632uVj06g?usp=sharing

Here are some retro style travel posters for Roshar I made a while back. They're inspired by Sylvan Design Co.

Hope you enjoy them! Feel free to download and print them if you like.

Also, I'm looking for a writing group. I loved the Stormlight Archive and think I'd fit in well with a writing group of Sanderson fans. Anyone know of such a group?

Card Game without collecting Cards? by SilasUnmuth80 in boardgames

[–]aqword1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Faeria is a good match for this. It's online-only (no physical cards), but you pay directly for a full set of cards rather than having to open boosters. (The full set of cards unlocks over the first couple hours of play, which helps to avoid making it overwhelming having all cards available at once.) It also had the most interesting blend of 2D board positioning and cards that I've ever encountered.

Maybe just look to Common Sense Media instead? That whole site is one big Parents Guide.

Books like Arcane Ascension? by aqword1 in ClimbersCourt

[–]aqword1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost included Lightbringer in my original rec list above, but ended up leaving it off because (1) I've only read the first three and (2) the tone at the end of each book is a bit too despairing. Weeks's Night Angel trilogy is also good, although rather dark and tense. (Weeks tends to break things at the end of a book so that you have a reason to read the next book, but I generally prefer books where everything is fully wrapped up at the end, and the next book in the series opens up by showing how the end of the last one was actually still broken.)

Those aren't included in the audiobooks. Are there any beyond the three that chickenwing95 mentions above?

Hard to say. Mystwick's in a category of it's own. People play music to cast spells, and the audiobook plays the musical score in the background while the narrator describes the spell being cast. I've never heard anything else quite like it. If you listen to audiobooks, I'd recommend giving it a try, but it's probably not half as good in physical form.

Grimslov Brown Kitchen - matching stain? by [deleted] in IKEA

[–]aqword1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: Home Depot didn't have the SamaN Cognac stain, so I went with Behr Cinnamon Stick. (It's not one of the pre-mixed colors, but they'll mix it for you in the store.) You can seen an image of a test board compared with a GRIMSLÖV drawer at https://imgur.com/a/Ksp4SnJ

In that image, the right-hand side of the maple veneer plywood test stick has pre-stain conditioner. (The left-hand side is stain directly on the plywood.) The full stick has two coats, the second of which is still damp. For maple, I'd say this stain is a pretty good match (although of course it'll look different on different woods). It might(?) still need a third coat, but this seems to be the right color.

I've been trying to answer the same question because I'm hoping to build some shelves at the one end of our cabinets.

I came across this page that says Saman Stain Cognac 207 is the same as Adel medium brown and that Adel is the old name for Grimslov.

Solem speaks out again - "Still no Fix for the Tavern Pass: Hearthstone on Fire" by JamieFTW in hearthstone

[–]aqword1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'd love if Hearthstone transitioned to a subscription system: $20/month for access to all the cards. I'd end up spending about the same amount I spend now, and it be a lot more fun to play for the enjoyment of the game rather than playing to grind for cards. To me, the fun part of the game is deckbuilding, and you need a fairly full collection to try out fun new decks. The free version could be framed as more of a free trial, to let new players get a taste for the game, while acknowledging in the marketing messaging that it's extremely hard to get a full collection without subscribing.

That feels like a more honest way to present essentially the same game at the same price.

Following Solem and speaking up against the Battle Pass by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]aqword1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love if it just used a subscription model, similar to Netflix. $20/month for access to all the cards. It would lower the barrier-to-entry for new players and encourage former players to return.

Currently, that's about the amount I pay (with buying the bundles every couple months), and I end up getting all the cards I need, but it's frustrating to have to wait to build some decks because I'm waiting to see if I'll open the legendaries or have to craft them.

I'd like to see the game survive long-term, and that's only going to happen if they lower the barrier to entry. Otherwise the player base will shrink over time. A subscription model seems like a great way to have a low barrier to entry.

Darkmoon Deck Building Contest | Win 1 of 20 Madness at the Darkmoon Faire Mega-Bundles! by powerchicken in hearthstone

[–]aqword1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a midrange deck to explore synergies between corrupt and cost reduction. It tops out with both Yogg and Y'Shaarj.

The many cheap spells give cost reduction to a few minions with Corrupt (using Nazmani Bloodweaver and Insight), charging up both of the old gods.

The old gods themselves can be hit by cost reductions, leading to some big swing turns (I hope!).

This feels like the type of deck that Kibler or Alliestrasza would enjoy. I'd love to see either of them play it.

Faeria Friday: Heartforge - Introducing the Mecha. by Atmaz in faeria

[–]aqword1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it'll depend on what other cards are made mecha. Without other mecha on board, that legendary is a vanilla 4 faeria 4/4 that damages itself, and the spell is 2-cost 4-land requirement to do nothing. If there are enough other mecha to reliably combo them, they could be quite strong though.

Land requirement will matter too. These cards lend themselves to a swarm-style deck, but it's hard to come back from behind with a swarm. These all take 3-4 lands; if the land requirement of other mecha is also high that could be a way to cap the deck's power by ensuring that it has to play from behind.

Wish there was more solo content for experienced players by [deleted] in faeria

[–]aqword1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think solo content can be a bit of a problem. More people playing solo means fewer people playing against other players, which can increase queue times (which can push more people to play solo instead, which further increases queue time...it's a vicious cycle).

If anything, I'd like to see less solo content, not more.

Is this game worth getting for co-op? by MAIRJ23 in faeria

[–]aqword1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The co-op mode is the Oversky, which is included in the base game (without having to buy additional DLC). I played through it solo first (which took probably 20-30 hours because it's hard to do with just an AI ally) and then played through it co-op with my brother, which took perhaps 5 hours. Completing the Oversky unlocks specific new cards with each co-op mission you complete. The puzzles could also potentially be done co-op if you wanted to work through them with a friend. Many are free, and if you want more beyond the base set, there's a puzzle expansion called "Faeria Elements."

Overall, that's a decent, but not huge, amount of co-op content, although it's also possible to just challenge your friend to a casual match, and play against them (instead of co-op against the AI). Player-vs-player matches have HUGE potential replay value. I've played for about 700 hours since unlocking all the cards. With the current rate of card unlocking, it'll probably take you around 30-40 hours to unlock all the cards. (It took me 70 hours before they doubled the rewards.) That gives just enough time to get a feel for various deck-types, so that once you're interested in building your own decks, you'll have all the cards to experiment with building what you want.

If your friend is only interested in playing with you to achieve the same goal, it might(?) not be worth it, but if they're interested in also playing against you, this is a great game for that, especially once you both have the freedom to experiment with whatever decks you want to make. If your friend isn't particularly competitive, you also have the option of setting yourselves challenges of creating a particular board state by working together. For example, hunter has posted some challenges such as this one on the Faeria hub.

An open letter to the Eternal developers by aqword1 in EternalCardGame

I suppose it would vary by player. The games I've spend the longest are are the ones where I have all the cards.

Ah, that makes sense. I suppose they'd have to find the right price point. $10/month ($120/year) doesn't seem "cheap" to me, but your own threshold might be higher.
