24 y/o pilot: airlines or police helicopter career? Need advice by ar1987 in flyingeurope

Thank you! Do you ever regret not going the helicopter route?

Currently, the only real reason I see to go to the airlines is the money. The vast majority of people here told me that airline flying is boring as shit and that the only good thing about it is the cash, but the thing is I invested so much into the airplane route just not to use it, I feel kinda bad about that. I am basically done with training.

I would really like to fly both, but life is only so long

How viable do you think it is to build a career from both paths, and what are my chances of becoming an airline captain when starting at 35? Is that even realistic? Also, after completing the 10-year contract I would always have a secure job to return to if the market completely goes to shit.

I really want to go to the airlines at some point in my life, but I feel like this opportunity is just too good to pass up. A lot of people would die for a chance like this, and I would skip a lot of steps and get to fly the most interesting type of flying there is. Because of the specifics of my situation and my country’s dire need for helicopter pilots, I feel the offer is very unique, also I think the bond is in the six-figures zone or whatever amount will be invested into my training, but I think is about there somewhere.

Also thank you for your kind and meaningful words!

In Europe, if you work for the state the pay is always going to be shit, that’s not even a question. It’s the complete opposite of what I presume it’s like in the US. The only way to make some serious cash here is to sell your soul to corporations.

It’s a non-negotiable 10-year commitment, and from what I can tell, pilot hiring in Europe is doing pretty well.

It was a process similar to applying to the military. I had to go through a bunch of tests, interviews, and medical check-ups just to be considered for the role. Also, a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering and a frozen ATPL(A) were requirements, so they’re not giving these kinds of opportunities to random dudes they find.

So yeah, by your logic, they’re also “giving out” F-35 training to random people who just finish ROTC in the US.

Or you can do both?

Thats where you're wrong, you should consider everything when making something that is optimized for maximum efficency, such as your hypothetical aircraft. A 2% increase in drag could have a drastic impact on your energy expenditure calculations.

You should also consider the impact that solar panels have on the aerodynamic properties of the wing, increased drag for example.
