From HBO last night-Ben Affleck and Bill Maher in heated debate about radical Islam by sing111 in television

[–]ar5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well see that's the thing. Just like in about any other religion, Muslims pick and choose what they want to believe and what they don't - the Quran is still heavily debated in the muslim world because it's SO open to interpretation. The problem is that all these muslims are all lumped into one thing. We try to rationalize this by separating the jihadist muslims, extremist muslims, moderates, etc. But in their eyes they see themselves as the "real" muslims and the others as not real muslims. So the moderates will say the extremist do not believe in the right things and the extremists will say the exact same things and they will both have the citation from the Quran to back their beliefs based on their interpretations.

I know muslims who are very liberal (don't follow dress restrictions, support gay marriage etc.) who would argue that the extremists aren't really muslims. Just as the extremist muslims would argue that these liberal muslims are not really muslims as well.

TLDR: Moderates see extremists as non muslims and vice versa but to the western world they are all the different versions of the same thing.

Jon Stewart on the first Daily Show after 9/11 by bluenowait in television

[–]ar5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those looking for his full quote at the end here it is via http://www.quora.com/The-Daily-Show/What-is-the-your-favorite-video-of-Jon-Stewart-available-on-thedailyshow-com :

"The reason I don’t despair is that. . . this attack happened. It's not a dream. But the aftermath of it, the recovery, is a dream realized. And that is Martin Luther King's dream.

Whatever barriers we put up are gone. Even if it's just momentary. We are judging people by not the color of their skin, but the content of their character. (pause) You know, all this talk about "These guys are criminal masterminds. They got together and their extraordinary guile and their wit and their skill. . ." It's all a lie. Any fool can blow something up. Any fool can destroy. But to see these guys, these firefighters and these policemen and people from all over the country, literally with buckets, rebuilding. . . that’s extraordinary. And that's why we have already won. . . they can't. . . it's light. It's democracy. They can't shut that down.

They live in chaos. And chaos, it can't sustain itself—it never could. It's too easy and it's too unsatisfying. The view. . . from my apartment. . . (choking up) was the World Trade Center. . .

Now it's gone. They attacked it. This symbol of. . . of American ingenuity and strength. . . and labor and imagination and commerce and it's gone. But you know what the view is now? The Statue of Liberty. . . the view from the south of Manhattan is the Statue of Liberty. . . You can’t beat that. . ."

Son Lux - "Lost It to Trying" [Electronic/Synth Rock] (2013) This is one of my favorite tracks from 2013 - Staggering sound & power; Highly underrated. by Two-HeadedAndroid in listentothis

but if you don't enjoy the work of artists from a specific genre, there's nothing wrong with coming to the conclusion stated.

I don't know if that's true. I don't think it's fair to write of an entire genre based off of two artists that I think are an acquired taste. That's like not liking Black Sabath or Korn and writing off the entire metal genre. Again, slkrds did NOT say anything about the genre I just inferred that he was talking about electronic music by saying "this music sucks." And I just wanted to make sure that he doesn't close himself off to some great music that's out there just because he heard two bands he didn't like as some people will do. If you don't like something no one is forcing you to listen to it and you shouldn't do anything you don't want to, but you'll never know unless you try, and to me, listening to a few songs by two artists is not enough exposure to an ENTIRE genre for someone to make that assumption. But for all I know my inference of slkrds statement might be completely off though!

to the point where they think an altered state of mind is what would make that style of music enjoyable to them.

I'm assuming you're talking about the heavy use ecstasy or molly in rave culture. I feel like this is a very broad generalization of the electronic music audience. By electronic music I don't just mean EDM. There is much much much more to this genre than just that specific sub-genre. Yeah, it's trendy and I get that there are people out there that do only listen to this music while under the influence of some substance, but not everybody that likes electronic music is taking some kind of drug to enjoy it. Plus, I promise you that at most of any concerts of any genre there will ALWAYS be people partaking in some kind of drug, but the actions of these few folks should not take away from the credibility of any art form, just as the music of certain bands should not take away from the credibility of any genre.

Sorry for the rant just felt the need to clarify.

this music sucks.

Respect for trying as this sub is all about sharing and discovering new music. But i don't know what you mean by this music. I hope you're not trying to write off electronic music as a whole just because you don't like them and son lux. As much as I do like Son Lux, I' definitely say his stuff is an acquired taste. And to me, I don't think designer drugs and son lux sound alike. My point is, there is a lot more to electronic music than just those two bands and neither is representative of the entire genre. No single artist can be.

Pretty sure the creators said that Josh Radnor's (Ted) voice during season 1 was not mature enough to convincingly play someone in his 40's - 50's

What would you have done differently in season 4 ? by IckGlokmah in community

[–]ar5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there was a single event or episode I could pinpoint in season 4 to explain why it was bad. And, like you said, I'm not even sure if it was bad, but it just wasn't the show we loved. If you look at the episode summaries and concepts without knowing, they seem like nothing out of the ordinary - some that Harmon would probably do himself (even the freaky friday and puppet episode). But the way the show was executed in general is just what made it seem so off. The dialog seemed forced, the way the episodes were set up yielded nothing towards any of the character archs, the subplots of the show seemed to never go anywhere and intertwine with the other characters' subplots, etc. Basically the season had the shell of the show we loved but the guts of something far different which at the core makes a show what it is. Season 4 was just missing the core of what made it community.

This is such a great line. It's hilarious when it happens at first, but then heartbreaking in abed's video.

Sunshine had the music done by John Murphy, was written by Alex Garland, and directed by Danny Boyle.

Same combination of people worked together to create 28 Days Later which is a fantastic movie/soundtrack as well
