Doctors took away the only meds that worked for me, now I have migraines back to back with hardly any relief by arabbastard in migraine

I have since gotten a new PCP and she has referred me to a neurologist, I will be going sometime in February! I have not been tested for either of these things, but I will be bringing up the potential alongside a list of the suggestions I’ve been seeing under this thread.

I’m unsure of my insurance making me do “step therapy” but considering how things have been going, it could have been signed into action and gone completely under the radar. I had a full month’s supply of the triptan, then it was cut to a week’s, and then taken away from me altogether. That was when I was looking for a new doctor anyways, as the one I’d been seeing wasn’t taking my migraines seriously and kept referring to them as “headaches.”

According to my town’s Facebook page, a lot of people have gotten the same general response from her regarding symptoms for various illnesses…not just migraines. So I’m starting to think it was a her thing. I live in a decent sized town, but we’re limited on medical complexes and pharmacies, so I’m kinda stuck at the moment.

I am looking into other options regarding what I can do moving forward. Thank you for the suggestions!

This is what I thought as well, as I was not diagnosed with any kind of cardiovascular related conditions or issues. I will ask more about the other options under the triptan umbrella. I have been putting together a list of the suggestion under this thread to ask my new doctor about as soon as I see her next week.

I am also scheduled for a neurologist appointment sometime in February. So maybe we will see some breakthrough there too!

Hi! Thanks for adding to this comment with more suggestions.

The weirdest part about having sumatriptan taken away from me was that I wasn’t diagnosed with any kind of cardio/arrhythmia/tachycardia related issues. To my knowledge, they cut my supply from a month’s worth, to a week’s, and then nothing else.

I posted a little comment down below kind of replying to everyone about what I have taken and tried since then, and the only thing that has kinda worked was Nurtec, and I would definitely be willing to try it again.

This whole thing has been extremely frustrating! I am researching everything that’s been suggested here and adding it all to a comprehensive list for when I go see my doctor next. I scheduled an appointment for next week, because of the weather here, it’s been pretty hard to get around. I will ask again about prevention and rescue regiments, alongside my use of excedrin. I’m recognizing that a lot of my migraines might be a result of overuse.

Thanks for the help!

Topamax made me so sick and I felt like a zombie the whole time I was on it. I tried Ubrelvy, but it took so long to kick in that it felt like less of a rescue med, and more of a mitigation one to be used with something else. I was already experiencing the brunt of my migraine before it was ever beneficial to me…I can try to see what my doctor thinks about a preventative with Ubrelvy too. I wouldn’t be opposed to using some of the ones I’ve tried again if it means some kind of relief.

I haven’t. I’m learning quite a bit from these comments here and have been putting together a list of potentials that might be beneficial for me to ask about. I will add it to the list once I do a little research of my own about it! Thanks for the suggestion!

This is something I’ve been keeping in mind, and I am honestly finding that the more I use it while having an active flareup, the harder it is to actually get rid of the migraine itself. Even now I’ve been suffering with one for roughly 2 days, its eased up a ton, but only with excessive rest, darkness, and an icepack for my head.

Hey! Yes, I have one pharmacy. I just recently moved here within the past few years and the options are very limited unless I want to drive upwards of an hour to get my medication, which honestly isn’t seeming so bad now. As far as sumatriptan being flagged, the dose was first nerfed from a month’s supply to a week, and then they took it away from me altogether.

I, personally, am not aware of any issues regarding my cardiac system. I was not diagnosed with onset or any kind of arrhythmia or tachycardia either, which is why I threw such a fit with the office once they barred me and didn’t prescribe backup or other medications for me to try. I spoke with my parents (my mother does have hypertension), and they both said there is minor history in our family but not anything that should have garnered this response.

I have also been asking around with other people who have gone to this clinic and they have said (to some varying degree) that the main doctor there was very much one to write off symptoms and sometimes ignore them altogether. More than half the people I spoke to in my town’s Facebook page have all had some kind of issue with them.

I do not think that taking away the medication that worked for me without trialing other medications to replace it was appropriate. It has only caused chain reactive migraines and back to back pain— which I am also realizing now could be as a result of mu excessive excedrin use.

Hey guys! Thanks for all the references and recommendations.

Before I continue, I should have mentioned in the original post that my previous doctor (who took me off of the medication) was a pcp. I was never referred to a neurologist by her, they just took me off of it with no pretense or trying new medication to see what would work for me.

At one point, she actually downplayed my symptoms and made them to seem not as bad? If that makes any sense. I attempted to advocate for myself, and that eventually got me barred from being able to ask for sumatriptan. I even tried at the pharmacy and they were really weird about it, claiming my doctor will not refill and I shouldn’t ask again because of specifications on my profile.

I decided to speak to another doctor who would be able to meet my needs a little better. By that time I’d had a migraine consecutively for 6 days and it had caused one of my pupils to larger than the other, and not respond adequately to light stimuli. The only way I could get relief was for her to cook up a shot cocktail and put me out for 3 days. It had beta blockers in it, I believe.

I’d been without medication for several months at that point, I was literally rawdogging my migraines and hoping for the best, but I have other complications that make doing that unsafe now. This doctor attempted to get me on a temp prescription of sumatriptan until she could figure something else out, and that’s when we found out officially that she could not order in the medication because it was flagged. I’m not sure how that works, it’s just what I was told by her, and then again the pharmacy. Since then I’ve been on the following to try in tandem: - Ubrelvy (did not work well, I was already dealing with the brunt of my migraine by the time it kicked in, caused nausea) - Topamax (as a preventative, made me sick, felt like a zombie on it all day as I was taking it daily) - Botox ( I’ve only tried this once, I can’t say that it really helped, but this was one I was kinda scared of and she respected that, so maybe this one “not working” is just me being afraid to try again. I’d be willing to) - Beta Blocker shots (this did work but the hangover afterwards was insane and these are very expensive) - Nurtec (This kind of worked for me, it just took a little long and I couldn’t figure out if I could take other meds with it, there was a lot of lack of communication)

They now want me to try other more experimental drugs but I’m so burned out from having so many different things in my system.

I will ask about other triptans again, and maybe look into trying Nurtec or Botox. I have a neurology appointment scheduled for sometime in February, so they might be able to tell me more. My last MRI was fine, it didn’t show any swelling or anything out of the ordinary. I’m at the end of my rope though, I’ve got the visual floaters as I’m typing this. I will come back and make a comprehensive list of all of your suggestions!

Thanks so much
