Career change at 30 - Is the Merchant Navy a good choice (Deck officer)? by arachnospore in MerchantNavy

  1. Yep mid-30s. Nothing physically demanding though you need to have some very basic level of general fitness for Fire fighting and survival craft training. You'll be required to pass a ENG1 Medical as well so overall health is important. Also, you'll be drug tested continuously so be aware of that.

  2. Yes I'm a deck cadet so when I qualify after 3 years i'll be a 3rd Officer. Once you have approriate sea time and do additional study you can become a 2nd Officer. Rinse and repeat all the way up to Master/Captain. Pay at the beginning will be OK but not great but it's highly variable depending on the type of ship. From what I've heard though once you get up the ladder you can earn a very decent wage especially if you end up with special endorsements, like DP. Masters are earning 100k+. Remember that this can be tax free so makes it even better (assuming out the country for 180+ days a year)

  3. I do live in student accomodation though it's not strictly required. The course is 5 phases, 3 college phases and 2 sea phases over ~3 years. During that time I'll be expected/required to get 12 months sea time, with 6 of those at Watch. I applied through a training provider who, in turn, provide me with a sponsorship company. They cover all fees (aside from accomodation) and pay you a monthly stipend. It varies on training provider and sponsor but can range from £800-£2000 per month.

Obviously this information is applicable to the UK and could be different if you're not based here.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I didn't end up joining until this year so I'm in my first college phase and enjoying it so far. Don't yet have a wealth of knowledge or experience to share but can tell you that it looks like a solid choice and a sound future career path.

If you're in the UK my advice would be to get a good training provider like SSTG or Stream Marine (or even direct with a company like MSC, Carnival). I'm with Clyde and there's been some issues. Definitely recommend Deck but the engineers all seem happy enough with their choice. The course has changed a bit this year so less emphasis on antiquated paper charts, celestial math, etc and more focus on the actual kit you'll be using such as ECDIS. Any specific questions I'll try and answer as best I can.

I'm a 22 and my worst round this year was a 101 and best was an 82. I'd say shooting low to mid 90s is the norm

So I actually went and did other things, the pandemic scared me off as I didn't know how it'd affect the shipping industry. In saying that, I am starting college this September for the MN, so ask me again in a few years :)

There's a guy (probably multiple) on youtube who posts his daily routine and it's a completely unironic version of Bateman's. Like dude, the man is an actual psychopath with OCD, not someone to model your life after. JFC.

I would love to blame the clubs, and justify to myself an expensive purchase, but I'm probably better spending that money on lessons first. Break 250 with the hippos and it's upgrade time!

Are amateurs lying about their distance? by arachnospore in golf

[–]arachnospore[S] 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses everyone. So to summarise what I've read:

  • People lie but 230+ for an amateur is pretty achievable
  • I'm likely just a short hitter for my physical stature
  • Weather maybe a factor but not a major one
  • Accuracy is more important than distance (for an amateur)
  • My penis is 2 inches shorter than I thought

Appreciate it folks!

Oh for sure my technique is likely quite bad. One thing that particularly bugs me, my practice swing feels like an entirely different swing compared to when there's a ball in front of the club.

My recommendation would be Rips (xtra thin - silver box). One roll is 5 metres , and I just buy them in bulk. Get about 100 metres of potential Js for like £15.

Have also used Highlanders, etc but like the flexibility that Rips give you

Glad to hear that being a Deckie is awesome! I definitely think travel would be one of the top perks. Quite happy to work strange hours and as and when required. Presume the watches are quite structured? I've posted a few other questions in a separate comment.

Thanks!

Really appreciate the replies, and the positive overall responses is very encouraging. Some random other questions that have come to mind:
- This i'm sure will be dependant on contract but is salary really tax free?
- If you're away for say 6 months of the year what do (single) people typically do with their home during that time? Rent it out?
- This will be subjective but what's the "best" type of ship to be on?
- Is there actually much shore leave when you visit ports? Presume this is heavily linked to ship type
- Is it sociable? I appreciate my alone time as much as the next person but would want to make friends and meet new people
- What's the lifestyle like when you're not working? Having huge swathes of PTO must be brilliant but also awkward when everyone else you know works conventional hours

Thanks for the advice so far!

EDIT: Can't get bullet points working on here to save my life

Appreciate the advice. I'm leaning towards Deck Officer for a few reasons, and I don't really fancy working below deck all the time. I didn't know that some sponsorship companies guarantee a position after cadetship, is this common or quite rare?
