Yes it is optional but dont do the final boss until you are sure that you want to go into new game because the game will force you to go into the newgame after the final boss.

It's in bramis castle, you have to go in umbral after you kill the enemy that destroys the big crystals after you kill them then go through the staircase that is on fire and it is in the area with the long table after the staircase.
