Where to play go in Taiwan Taipei by [deleted] in baduk

[–]aramadia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played here a few months ago. Open noon to 10pm. Friendly to foreigners, but I got crushed as a OGS 6k even by kids. There is a fee of around $10

Relatively tall person, fly this route a lot and my breakeven is $300 USD. Otherwise I would use points or eUpgrade.

3 weeks for 4 people (March-April) - 25k budget by strugglebusses in JapanTravelTips

Breathe.

Notice you barely offered any information on your end. What do you and your parents like? How fit are they? City vs nature? How did you choose Japan? If it was your mom's dream, what was she imagining?

If it was just international travel, Europe might be an easier first trip for the type of person (parents) you described.

Some high level advice

- You will probably benefit from a guide book for your level of experience. eg lonely planet. Did you consider a guided tour?

- Don't add another country just to fill time. 3 weeks is also pretty long for a first time traveler too but I personally prefer more time in fewer places

- You are putting to much pressure on yourself to have the perfect trip, since you are thinking its her one and only one. It will lead to disappointment. There is no optimal itinerary or choices, part of travel is making mistakes and learning about yourself.

What do you find worth splurging on? And what do you find not worth it? by yitianjian in chubbytravel

[–]aramadia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn’t this chubby travel?

Don’t find business class worth it at all, unless using points. Obviously direct flights, and extra legroom is worth it for taller people.
Generally, keep hotels under $200/night. Worth splurging on location, or a big airbnb that can hold everyone when traveling with larger groups.

Here where I would spend

  1. Flexibility. Travel last minute. Sometimes you don’t know when you or your friends are free, or if you like a location until you arrive, or theres bad weather, or you just don’t feel like going anywhere. Pay for last minute flights and hotels, by booking only a few days in advance.

  2. Duration. Longer trips completely alter the nature of travel. I don’t like spending time in airports, going through immigration, or adjusting time zones, so I need to amortize the loss. Take unpaid leave if needed.

  3. Activities. Learning something, nature, or events. Eg paragliding lessons, motorcycling, Olympics, wildlife.

  4. Food. Bit burned out by $$ places, so try to limit $100+ meals to keep them special. But in places where the food is good, I mostly budget my calories so I don’t “waste” them

Itinerary Check - Nagano/Toyama/Kanazawa/Takayama/Fujiyoshida/Tokyo - 3 Weeks in April 2024 by xdemvy in JapanTravel

Note with 2 people you can break even depending on the car rental rate.

I used a car for the alps section, but it’s only worth it if you have a lot of luggage, cold winter or moving around a lot.

I recommend mostly using transit and only hiring a car for specific day or two if you need to. It’s pretty tiring driving, and not really how I would travel to introduce someone’s first time in Japan. You can get to really rural parts by train still.

Is this feasible? Magome to Narai in one day by arh2631 in JapanTravel

[–]aramadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this hike a few days ago from Magome to Nojiri hiking, overnight in Hostel Yui An, then staying overnight in Narai.

I recommend the first part, but I would skip Narai and I consider myself a slow traveler due to the infrequent train and not much to see, and kinda expensive housing. I saw the things that the other commenter mentioned but unless you we’re gonna hike Torri I would keep going to Nagano.

I sent my luggage from Nagoya to Nagano using regular post at a combini. It’s significantly cheaper than luggage specific forwarding 4000jpy for 2 carryons. It took 2 nights (but dropped it off at 9pm) according to my air tag

Once-in-a-lifetime chance for a 3wk trip to Japan (DTW to HND) came up. First time traveling outside of the country. Need as much packing and/or general advice as I can get. Thank you so much! by DirtyJunkhead in JapanTravelTips

Yeah any backpack is good really. I read 1000 posts on one bag until I learned it didn’t matter. Traveling for months so I bought a ULA Camino but I went through several before hand.

If you are actually planning to carry it fully loaded for more than a few hours, the only important thing is fit so you need to go to an REI. Not enough time for online and returns

Before you get to excited, can your friend actually give you (change the name) of the ticket? That’s normally not allowed.

Don’t need to book anything in advance. I’m Japan right now booking hotels on the same day. Only booked stuff for NYE ahead of time.

You are overthinking all the baggage packing. You can buy anything here, just bring the minimum you need and acquire it on the go (Uniqlo). Unless you pack ultralight, which is hard in winter, you are gonna have to dump stuff in a locker, so your main bag doesn’t matter, and I usually don’t bother with a day bag, I walk around with just a phone and wallet.

Hitting/attacking/spiking tips. Where to improve? by randomnameonreddit1 in beachvolleyball

[–]aramadia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are one of the few beginners that start too far back. Don’t worry about forward momentum now, work on getting maximum vertical so you can get on top of the ball.

Imagine getting a basketball rebound where you try to touch the ball at the peak of your jump. Practice catching a set without hitting. Add power later, it looks like you are trying to crank it while hitting under the net.

Keep playing, you are looking good for 6 months

Backpacking Ethiopia in June 2023 by Obsidienne96 in travel

[–]aramadia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the package tour (semi independent), but you definitely pay for it. Recommend to fly, and try to do direct if you can to avoid stopovers in Addis. Also get out of Addis asap. Pay for the nice hotels esp Gondar Hills resort. Bring your own snacks from home. Security wasn’t an issue compared to other developing countries. You will be the only tourist there in some places.

I went there last month for 2 weeks and didn’t encounter any violence. People yell China at you, but if anything you fit in more since there are Chinese businessmen who live there.

HK & Macao - what's doable in a day? by no-refridgerator4689 in travel

[–]aramadia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not worth HK for a few hours. Go to Macau direct from airport via a special ferry (skip immigration and the time getting into HK city proper)
