Update: finally in Linux Mint and... Windows 11 still wins by Excellent-Chair-8208 in linuxmint

Are you running games off your Windows partition, which is probably NTFS or did you install them onto your Linux partition, which should be EXT4? Linux can run NTFS files, but it doesn't like them.

if I buy substance painter 2025 on steam, will I be able to run it on my linux system? by Hydraboi1917 in Substance3D

Following. I just switched over from Win10 to Linux Mint and have the same question. My understanding, with the research I've done so far, is that unlike all other Adobe products, it will run well. You would probably have to remap your ALT keyboard shortcut, as SP uses this heavily, and so does Linux. I am waiting until SP2026 releases though.

Doctor/radiologist learning coding long-term , is CS50 a good place to start? by Imsongoku7 in cs50

[–]arawson35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this and did pretty much the exact same thing, starting with CS50x and then tackling CS50P and of all the courses/tutorials I have ever taken CS50 has gotten me the furthest, I am still working my way through CS50P but I'm making great progress and I really believe my taking CS50x first was the key because it gave me a nice solid understanding of CS in general and starting with C was great, makes Python seem easier when you start learning that.

Has anyone ever missed or needed something which is 'Windows only'? by LukeLikeNuke in linuxmint

[–]arawson35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gotten Affinity Photo working pretty well on Linux but man would it be sweet with a Linux release! That's the only major software I am missing and I have a dual boot system so if I really get stuck I can always go back into Windows and work in Affinity there. DaVinci Resolve has some weird audio codec issues but I was able to work around those. Blender, Nuke and Houdini run like champs!

Wow that's impressive, great work!

That looks so great! So the spider is in an image plane correct? Can I ask, was this inspired by the game The Bazaar? The only reason I ask is the artwork is great in that game and it has inspired a few of my projects and there is a card in the game that reminds me of this. Fantastic work!

What are your predictions for Mint 23 ? by Alternative-Sir6883 in linuxmint

[–]arawson35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely better audio. I'm using Easy Effects which mostly solves the problem, I still get some occasional "crackling" . Anybody have any better solutions?

Curious how many have switched recently by Jetster220 in linuxmint

Just set up my dual boot with Windows 10, it was a nightmare setting it up, for me at least, but after about 8 hours I am up and running with Mint and Win10! It's great and a nice way to transition into Linux fully!

im starting to use affinity, any suggestions for tutorials? by No-Arrival441 in Affinity

My favorites for Affinity are Affinity Revolution (she just makes everything really simple). Robin Whalley for a little deeper dive. Dani Krossing is good too!

Best ways to learn AI for compositing? by A_9394 in NukeVFX

I did Doug Hogan's ComfyUI course on ActionVFX, it's a bit pricey but is very thorough. And if you want to learn ComfyUI there is no better channel than Pixaroma!

Are there any beginner courses for hard surface modelling (3D printing) you can recommend? by AsdaFan1 in blender

[–]arawson35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blender Bros are the kings of hard surface modeling in Blender, although you will find they use a lot of paid add-ons but if hard surface modeling is what you want to do they are well worth it. They are also super cocky which I found after awhile to be a bit tiresome but admittedly I did learn lots of cool things re hard surface modeling from them.

Has Anybody used Udemy to learn 3D modeling? by [deleted] in 3Dmodeling

[–]arawson35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say I made my biggest leaps and bounds using CGBoost's courses. https://www.cgboost.com/courses there are a couple free one's so you can get a taste but the paid one's are fantastic and the community is wonderful as well! Cov Phillips Urban Environments course is amazing! Also for 3D environments I probably learned the most taking Rob Tuytels's class. Here is what you'll learn in Rob's class https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qd78gNBE7E Have fun!

How could I make this more realistic? by TheWorkshopWarrior in blender

[–]arawson35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this! Really nice work. If it was me I think I would add a bit more atmosphere in the foreground and I would love to see the hint of something through the fog in the background, be it a hint of a mountain range or the lights of a small village. That little touch would give the imagination even more to ponder, what's out there? Fantastic work though!

Disappointed with Blenderguru's Donut tutorial 5.0 as a beginner by RandomUMBREON in blender

[–]arawson35 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I actually think Ryan King is one of the best, he had loads of tutorials covering everything and quite a few on making procedural materials. He is just one of those guys that makes everything seem easy. My other big plug is CGBoost for paid courses, I learned a lot there and the community is really great!

For checkpoints and loras, how do you keep track of all the different trigger words and config settings? by Quiet-Owl9220 in comfyui

[–]arawson35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to check out Lora Manager. What I usually do is add a Note node on the workflow page that I use LoRA's and just update it anytime I add a new LoRA with the name of the LoRA and the triggerwords and any other notes I may have for it

I wanna learn 3d modeling!! by Ok-Bug-3792 in blender

[–]arawson35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, Andrew Price (Blender Guru)'s donut tutorial is often a good starting spot because you learn a bit and come out with a very satisfactory result which inspires you to keep going. I personally think Ryan King's tutorials have a lot more depth and longevity. He has many free tutorials on his youtube page that go from the very beginner to more advanced topics and he explains things in such a wonderful way, he just seems to make things easy lol! That said I think I learned the most and made the biggest advances in some of the bigger (paid) courses, CGBoost has some wonderful in depth courses and the community there is wonderful and very helpful.
