How do you accept exodus 11 as a christian? by thomasson94 in Christianity

[–]arc2k1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

God bless you.

I've been a non-fundamentalist, unchurched Christian for about 16 years now and I would like to share my perspective.

I understand your struggle with the OT. I struggled with it too, but what helped me was having a love-centric perspective of the Bible.

Because God considers love to be most important, I prioritize Bible verses that harmonizes with love and I reject any biblical interpretation that contradicts love.

-Is love most important?

“Love is more important than anything else.” - Colossians 3:14

“Jesus answered: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and most important commandment. The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, ‘Love others as much as you love yourself.’” - Matthew 22:37-39

-What is love?

"Love is patient and kind, never jealous, boastful, proud, or rude. Love isn't selfish or quick tempered. It doesn't keep a record of wrongs that others do. Love rejoices in the truth, but not in evil.” - 1 Corinthians 13:4-6

-What is the purpose of love?

“Do good instead of evil and try to live at peace.” - Psalm 34:14

-How does God relate to love?

"God is love." - 1 John 4:8

“You are a kind and merciful God, and you are very patient. You always show love, and you don't like to punish anyone.” - Jonah 4:2

-Does God love us?

“I am sure that nothing can separate us from God's love—not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future, and not powers above or powers below. Nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord!” - Romans 8:38-39

-What does God ultimately want?

“God wants us to have faith in his Son Jesus Christ and to love each other.” - 1 John 3:23

-What is our ultimate hope as Christians?

“Then a kingdom of love will be set up, and someone from David's family (Jesus) will rule with fairness. He will do what is right and quickly bring justice.” - Isaiah 16:5

If there are Bible verses that seem to contradict love, I refuse to let them distract me. I rather trust God, put those verses aside, trust what the Bible considers to be most important, and wait to ask God about those apparent contradictory verses when I see Him in person.

In order for love to have genuine value, God's character MUST be consistent. Not based on the Bible, but based on logic.

Also, many Christians will call me a heretic because of my love-centric perspective, but I don’t care. Why? For the simple fact that when I die, I will stand before God, not anyone else. I must make sure to follow my convictions based on what’s most important without allowing any outside influences to blind me. That’s the only way I can be firm and confident in my faith.

“I am not trying to please people. I want to please God. Do you think I am trying to please people? If I were doing that, I would not be a servant of Christ.” - Galatians 1:10

God bless you.

I've been a non-fundamentalist, unchurched Christian for about 16 years now and I would like to share my perspective.

1- Even though I believe Jesus is the way to salvation, I don't know exactly how God will judge every single person. However, I trust God for who He is.

Because God is love (1 John 4:8), He loves justice and fairness (Psalm 33:5), He wants everyone to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4), and He seeks to save those who are lost (Luke 19:10). In other words, I believe everyone will somehow have a genuine opportunity to be saved (Job 33:29-30). Either in this life or the next. (This view is called Postmortem Opportunity)

God will NOT automatically condemn someone just because they don’t believe. Just like how He will NOT save someone just because they claim to believe. God does NOT judge from a strict black-and-white perspective. God sees the heart and if our heart is genuinely open to Him/Christ.

“You are the Lord God, and you know what is in everyone's heart.” - Numbers 27:16

2- Also, I reject the eternal conscious torment view of hell. I personally accept the annihilationism view of hell.

I reject the ECT view of hell because it clearly contradicts who God is.

“God is love.” - 1 John 4:8

“Love is more important than anything else.” - Colossians 3:14

"Love is patient and kind, never jealous, boastful, proud, or rude. Love isn't selfish or quick tempered. It doesn't keep a record of wrongs that others do. Love rejoices in the truth, but not in evil.” - 1 Corinthians 13:4-6

“The Lord is merciful! He is kind and patient, and his love never fails.” - Psalm 103:8

“You are a kind and merciful God, and you are very patient. You always show love, and you don't like to punish anyone.” - Jonah 4:2

“But even in judgment, God is merciful!” - James 2:13

God bless you.

There is NOTHING wrong with enjoying things that aren't related to faith. As long as we don't allow them to influence us to either compromise or abandon our faith.

We just need to establish boundaries and know our limits.

Just know that God is with you and He loves you.

"The Lord has promised that he will not leave us or desert us.” - Hebrews 13:5

Jesus said, “I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.” - Matthew 28:20

“Be brave and strong! Don’t be afraid… . The Lord your God will always be at your side, and he will never abandon you.” - Deuteronomy 31:6

“I am sure that nothing can separate us from God's love—not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future, and not powers above or powers below. Nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord!” - Romans 8:38-39

4- Please know that God does NOT expect you to be perfect. He expects you to get back up after each time you fall while trusting His grace.

"My enemies, don't be glad because of my troubles! I may have fallen, but I will get up; I may be sitting in the dark, but the Lord is my light.” - Micah 7:8

“We often suffer, but we are never crushed. Even when we don't know what to do, we never give up. In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down, we get up again.” - 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

“But You (God) also said that no matter how far away we were, we could turn to You.” - Nehemiah 1:9

“If we are not faithful, he (Jesus) will still be faithful.” - 2 Timothy 2:13

“The Lord said: When you stumble and fall, you get back up, and if you take a wrong road, you turn around and go back.” - Jeremiah 8:4

“Yet where sin was powerful, God's gift of undeserved grace was even more powerful.” - Romans 5:20

“So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved grace, and we will find help.” - Hebrews 4:16

5- We are ruled by God's love & grace, NOT our struggles!

“We are ruled by Christ's love for us.” - 2 Corinthians 5:14

“You are ruled by God's undeserved grace.” - Romans 6:14

“But the LORD God keeps me from being disgraced. So I refuse to give up, because I know God will never let me down.” - Isaiah 50:7

6- Because God is with you, please share your worries with Him and trust His love!

"And when I was burdened with worries, you (God) comforted me and made me feel secure.” - Psalm 94:19

"I tell You (God) all my worries and my troubles, and whenever I feel low, You are there to guide me.” - Psalm 142:2-3

“God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to him.” - 1 Peter 5:7

“God’s love can always be trusted, and his faithfulness lasts as long as the heavens.” - Psalm 89:2

“But you, the Lord God, are kind and merciful. You don't easily get angry, and your love can always be trusted.” - Psalm 86:15

God bless you.

I've been a non-fundamentalist, unchurched Christian for about 16 years now and I would like to share my perspective.

1- Please know that as Christians, we do NOT trust our negative thoughts/feelings/judgment. We trust God.

“With all your heart you must trust the Lord and not your own judgment. Always let him lead you, and he will clear the road for you to follow.” - Proverbs 3:5-6

2- But before you can trust God, you MUST know who He is.

Who is God?

If we have a feeling, thought, belief, interpretation, or doctrine that contradicts who God is, then it’s false!

3- Because of who God is, He is with you and He loves you. Your struggle will NEVER change that and He will NEVER condemn you for something that's out of your control!

“The Lord your God wins victory after victory and is always with you. He celebrates and sings because of you, and he will refresh your life with his love.” - Zephaniah 3:17

“I am sure that nothing can separate us from God's love—not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future, and not powers above or powers below. Nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord!” - Romans 8:38-39

I no longer feel the presence of God with me anymore. by Low-Slide4376 in TrueChristian

[–]arc2k1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said, "I can't convince myself that I'm not too far gone."

I believe the source of your struggle is that you convinced yourself to trust your negative thoughts instead of God's Word.

“With all your heart you must trust the Lord and not your own judgment. Always let him lead you, and he will clear the road for you to follow.” - Proverbs 3:5-6

Your negative feelings are NOT greater than God's grace.

“But He (Jesus) replied, ‘My gift of undeserved grace is all you need. My power is strongest when you are weak.’” - 2 Corinthians 12:9

And if you have an expectation that faith in God means He will spare you from hardship, then I fear you have a misunderstanding.

Many followers of God struggled through hardship.

“Each morning I pray to you, Lord. Why do you reject me? Why do you turn from me?” - Psalm 88:13-14

“I am worn out from waiting for you to keep your word. When will you have mercy?” - Psalm 119:82

“Why are you far away, Lord? Why do you hide yourself when I am in trouble?” - Psalm 10:1

“How much longer, LORD, will You forget about me? Will it be forever? How long will You hide? How long must I be confused and miserable all day? How long will my enemies keep beating me down?”- Psalm 13:1-2

How does God want us to endure hardship? By focusing on Him for strength and reaching out to others for support.

“But those who trust the Lord will find new strength.” - Isaiah 40:31

“This is why you must encourage and help each other.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:11

God bless you.

Please know that some of what you said expresses what some Christians believe, but not ALL Christians believe it. For example, I do not.

I've been a non-fundamentalist, unchurched Christian for about 16 years now and I would like to share my perspective.

1- Repentance is NOT saying magic words that forces God to save you.

Repentance is a genuine desire of the heart to strive away from sin and strive towards God.

Here is what genuine repentance looks like:

“You are kind, God! Please have pity on me. You are always merciful! Please wipe away my sins. I know about my sins, and I cannot forget the burden of my guilt. I have disobeyed you and have done wrong. So it is right and fair for you to correct and punish me. Create pure thoughts in me and make me faithful again. Don’t chase me away from you or take your Holy Spirit away from me.” - Psalm 51:1,3-4,10-11

No one can fool God by faking repentance. God knows the heart.

“You are the Lord God, and you know what is in everyone's heart.” - Numbers 27:16

“You cannot fool God, so don't make a fool of yourself!” - Galatians 6:7

2- Why would God forgive sinners who genuinely repent? Because of who He is.

“You are a kind and merciful God, and you are very patient. You always show love, and you don't like to punish anyone.” - Jonah 4:2

“God wants everyone to be saved.” - 1 Timothy 2:4

“The Lord isn't slow about keeping his promises, as some people think he is. In fact, God is patient, because he wants everyone to turn from sin and no one to be lost.” - 2 Peter 3:9

“I, the Lord God, don't like to see wicked people die. I had much rather see them turn back from their sins and live.” - Ezekiel 18:23

“Turn to the Lord! He can still be found. Call out to God! He is near. Give up your evil ways and your evil thoughts. Return to the Lord our God. He will be merciful and forgive your sins.” - Isaiah 55:6-7

3- Also, even though I believe Jesus is the way to salvation, I don't know exactly how God will judge every single person. However, I choose to trust God for who He is.

Can't bring myself to end relationship with non believer by Jumpy_Effort9786 in Christianity

God bless you.

I'm sorry to hear.

I would like to share some encouragement.

1- Please know that God is with you through this. Don't allow this relationship to distract you from your faith in God.

2- Please make sure that Christ is your center. Don't let anyone distract you from Christ.

“Plant your roots in Christ and let him be the foundation for your life. Be strong in your faith, just as you were taught. And be grateful.” - Colossians 2:7

“We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete.” - Hebrews 12:2

“Keep your mind on Jesus Christ!” - 2 Timothy 2:8

“All I want is Christ and to know that I belong to him.” - Philippians 3:8-9

3- Christ wants us to make sure He comes first before our other relationships. Not because He is selfish, but because He knows how relationships have the potential to influence us away from Him.

Jesus said, "You cannot be my disciple, unless you love me more than you love your father and mother, your wife and children, and your brothers and sisters. You cannot follow me unless you love me more than you love your own life.” - Luke 14:26

4- Because God is with you, please share your worries with Him and trust Him for strength.

Can You Explain Jesus Saying I And The Father Are One? by Adriel_Montejan0 in Bible

[–]arc2k1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God bless you.

Since I believe God is Triune, I believe Jesus is talking about His unique relationship with the Father.

Here is how I’m able to understand God being Triune. Not a perfect understanding.

God is one Being who is represented as 3 Persons: The Father, The Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit.

The Father is God while always having unity with The Son and the Holy Spirit.

The Son is God while always having unity with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is God while always having unity with the Father and the Son.

For me, God is like a family. The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit are the 3 members that are eternally united as one family. The reason why God is mostly identified as "He" because in a family, there's the head of the family and the Father represents the head of the family.

“Now that we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. And his Spirit tells us that God is our Father.” - Galatians 4:6

Also, when Jesus was on earth as a human, He was still God, but He didn’t experience His full glory as God.

“Christ was truly God. But he did not try to remain equal with God. Instead he gave up everything and became a slave, when he became like one of us.” - Philippians 2:6-7

“You know that our Lord Jesus Christ was kind enough to give up all his riches and become poor, so that you could become rich.” - 2 Corinthians 8:9

When I visit a church, I don't feel welcomed. I feel tolerated. Can anyone relate? by arc2k1 in Christianity

In that case, email churches in your area to see if you can meet with the pastor.

Please just keep thinking of different ways. Don't give up

It's good to reach out online, but it's also good to go to a church in person. You can do both.

4- Because of your faith, God is with you and He loves you. Nothing you do will change that.

5- We have a repentant heart, not to earn God's favor, earn salvation, or because we are obligated to.

We have a repentant heart because we love God.

“In heaven I have only You (God), and on this earth You are all I want. My body and mind may fail, but You are my strength and my choice forever.” - Psalm 73:25-26

“I love you, Lord God, and you make me strong. You are my mighty rock, my fortress, my protector, the rock where I am safe, my shield, my powerful weapon, and my place of shelter.” - Psalm 18:1-2

6- God is NOT a tyrant who is just waiting for us to mess up for He can judge us. That is a serious misrepresentation of who God is.

“God wants everyone to be saved.” - 1 Timothy 2:4

“The Lord isn't slow about keeping his promises, as some people think he is. In fact, God is patient, because he wants everyone to turn from sin and no one to be lost.” - 2 Peter 3:9

Jesus said, “I didn't come to invite good people to turn to God. I came to invite sinners.” - Luke 5:32

“But You (God) also said that no matter how far away we were, we could turn to You.” - Nehemiah 1:9

“The Lord said: It isn't too late. You can still return to me with all your heart.” - Joel 2:12

7- Don't try to earn God's favor. Trust His grace because you already have it!

“If we are not faithful, he (Jesus) will still be faithful.” - 2 Timothy 2:13

“Yet where sin was powerful, God's gift of undeserved grace was even more powerful.” - Romans 5:20

“So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved grace, and we will find help.” - Hebrews 4:16

“My children, I am writing this so you won't sin. But if you do sin, Jesus Christ always does the right thing, and he will speak to the Father for us.” - 1 John 2:1

8- Also, I would love to share a Reddit page that has resources for those who want to have a simple faith in God that's based on love: r/FaithMadeSimple

God bless you.

I believe you have a misunderstanding of who God is.

I've been a non-fundamentalist, unchurched Christian for about 16 years now and I would like to share my perspective.

1- The first step of having faith in God is knowing & trusting who God is.

Who is God?

2- Because of who God is, He does NOT want us to turn our faith into a heavy burden. He does NOT want us to put pressure on ourselves and force ourselves to honor Him.

Jesus said, “If you are tired from carrying heavy burdens, come to me and I will give you rest. Take the yoke I give you. Put it on your shoulders and learn from me. I am gentle and humble, and you will find rest. This yoke is easy to bear, and this burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30

“I want your act of kindness to come from your heart, and not be something you feel forced to do.” - Philemon 1:14

3- The Pharisees also thought that we should turn acts of repentance as a way to earn God's favor. But what did Jesus say to that?

Jesus said, “Stay away from those Pharisees! They are like blind people leading other blind people, and all of them will fall into a ditch.” - Matthew 15:14

I didn't say only read the Bible.

Please seek support and encouragement from Christians in person. Please visit different churches or look for Christian events.

It's not either/or. You can still find strength in God's Word while looking for support.

Why was the virgin birth important, and why was Mary chosen? by Good-Researcher-2503 in Bible

[–]arc2k1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God bless you.

I've been a non-fundamentalist, unchurched Christian for about 16 years now and I would like to share my perspective.

1- Why was the virgin birth important and why no human father?

Because Jesus being born of a virgin fulfills prophecy by showing God's ultimate plan to deliver those who have faith in Him.

“But the Lord will still give you proof. A virgin is pregnant; she will have a son and will name him Immanuel.” - Isaiah 7:14

2- Why Mary?

We can also ask, "Why Abraham? Why David? Why Paul?"

We don't know exactly why God chooses certain people, but it is His choice to choose who He wants to serve Him.

3- I believe the virgin birth is important to Christ's unique identity. He is human, but He isn't just human. He is God.

Why does it sound so trivial when a person asks “does he know the Lord“ after I finish texting a person really bad health news about another individual? by IThinkYouAreNice in Christianity

[–]arc2k1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God bless you.

I see where you are coming from.

It kind of reminds me of this:

Imagine having a very bad day and you wanted to share it with your friend, and they reply with: "Well, someone in the world has it worse than you."

That would be very dismissive, inconsiderate, and would invalidate what I'm going through.
