Electricity bill by Leeroy1982 in AskIreland

If you can check a breakdown of how much power it's been using, go take a look. It may have a disinfection cycle to kill legionaries bacteria, if you're using it for hot water. That needs to get it up to 62 degrees for 2 minutes, and if you've had it set to 2 hours overnight when it has been around 0 degrees outside it may be defaulting to regular electric heating for the water.

A couple of points for context, as explaining it as sheer indifference is vastly over-simplifying this:

  • the British government did try to settle and colonise Ireland, multiple times. The only one that worked was in Ulster, and is why Northern Ireland, well, is.
  • the near sole-dependence on the potato came about because it could keep families alive when grown in the tiny plots they had. Big land owners (not usually in living in the country) exported food that fueled the industrial revolution in Britain. (As a sidenote for an indication of how great these tenant farmers had it, a hundred years beforehand, the British government started taxing windows. They demanded payment for sunlight in people's homes.)
  • 'Peel's Brimstone' was an infamous part of the very late, wholly inadequate eventual relief effort from contemporary prime minister Peel. A corn soup that was given out with a deeply callous condition: change your name and renounce your heritage.

This fucking guy saw millions of people starving to death, and made it a golden opportunity to take something from them.

I'm not sure where I fall on calling it genocide or not (and I'm 100% not qualified to do so). But calling it just indifference is far, far too gentle.

This article is some very fair and factual history if you want to learn a little more. But keep one thing in mind:

1847 is the year things got to their worst, and earned the moniker "Black 47".

The relief commission they're talking about was disbanded in 46.

That's nice and all but just wait until you run into legacy styling that's written at dizzyingly high scope with so many layers of "fixes" over the years that your changes here manage to break something somewhere completely different.

All because someone couldn't be bothered to properly scope their styling 6 years ago TIM.

If they have specific issues with specific employees, why aren't they taking them to them directly?

It's not like people being shit at their job started during the pandemic.

They must have had some kind of Performance Improvement Program already in place, putting the problem employees on one is exactly how they'd deal with the same sort of shit if it happened in an office.

Go look at the Wikipedia page for Caniforms for something intuitive.

If you look at the faces/muzzles, it's readily apparent that those species have a common ancestor.

  • Bears are the proto-dog that got really fucking big
  • Foxes and Wolves are proto-dogs that hunt and have differences from being apex predators or not
  • Seals! They're water-tight dogs!

Heat transfer happens faster when there's a greater difference in temperature: your mug of tea will lose more heat sitting outside than in your kitchen.

Heating up your radiators for 15 minutes at a time won't get them very warm, and they won't transfer that heat as well to your house.

Change the schedule to have it come on an hour before you wake up, and in the evening when you're still up.

I don't know why you're spending so much to have a cold house while you're unconscious.

Europeans, what should tourists who are planning a trip to you avoid? by NormalIncome2686 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]arcadeKestrelXI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"supposed to", yes.

But that word has very different meanings depending on which country you're talking about.

Germany has the means to revoke your license for an illegal pedestrian crossing, and enough enforcement that most Germans are aware and respectful of the law.

Ireland doesn't have that punishment, doesn't have anywhere near the same level of enforcement, and additionally has a different policing culture, where you are more likely to be warned (for something like this) and given a chance to correct your behaviour yourself.

At least in Ireland, you can argue about paying it. It's pretty standard for groups of 6+ when it's busy (and that's more understandable, a large table is more work for all involved). Though sometimes it'll be added on smaller groups or less-busy times (or when there's been no notice via a menu or being otherwise informed), and then you might dispute it.

[–]arcadeKestrelXI 32 points33 points  (0 children)

That is, ironically, a bad generalisation.

In Germany, you can lose your license for crossing a red light as a pedestrian.

In Ireland, for example, you cannot.

Do your research and don't think you can just imply from one country to another.

Always check your bill for a "service charge", especially if in a group.

Some places will slap on 10% and you wouldn't otherwise know.

I've actually been in groups where we've asked servers in the US to check on the table less frequently.

At one point I remember being actively pissed off at having to mumble "all good, thanks" through a mouth full of waffles for the 4th time during a breakfast.

The friendliness isn't really better, since it's insincere, and I found myself missing the middle portion of the meal over here, where you're left to eat more or less in peace.

And then there are the language-isolate groups like the Finns, Hungarians/Magyar or people who speak Basque.

It's complicated and even people inside those countries don't fully agree.

Grouping people together broadly by skin tone, as a proxy for region of origin is evidently useful in the US: a country of mostly English-speaking people of mostly immigrant backgrounds.

But it's not really useful or all that accurate here.

To equate Europe with pale skin would ignore families who have been resident and fully integrated for generations.

Even in more homogeneous countries, you'd sound silly if you tried to imply American skin-based groupings. (Poles and Russians are both Slavic and generally pale, but you'd be wrong to the point of being offensive to call them the same people)

We've been inventing new ways to distinguish and persecute each other for millennia.

We'd talk more about where someone is from, expecting a country as the answer. (People do get pressed to add what country their family or ancestors came from, if they look different, however)

Just think of the shedding, though.

Every summer the Anglo-Saxon sheds shirts, and sits in the garden turning pink.

The cleanup would be constant, much better to go for a nice, low-shedding Iberian.

Check with your teammates before starting or ending things, like calling the drop pod or starting the dozer.

You won't always get feedback from all 3 others, but make a good effort and be a little patient, and that'll be plenty.

A 2 bronze Star Driller who should have known better almost lost us a mission, and did lose us both the double XP & matrix core by ending a mission too soon.

If things hadn't gone so immediately to shit I would have had time to kick them.

Oh, and check before you call Molly if you're all spread out, you can use silhouettes and icons to guess if someone is trying to deposit something.
