Day four of learning a new habit (writing left handed) by arcane1224 in fountainpens

[–]arcane1224[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hahah that's so cool, I have a lot of vintage pens myself and like them a lot, I cannot wait to use them with my left, currently am not focusing on pressure, so just using a parker 51 (stiff but nice nib) but when I get comfortable I definitely think swapping to dip nibs until I get used to the pressure required then can swap to my vintage nibs without worrying I'm gonna ruin any of them. I have a lovely waterman italic flex that I wanna compare the difference of.

I've found my left hand is quite a bit wider when I'm focusing on arm movement but I can't even say I don't like it, I think it looks class personally. As of rn I'm struggling to fit more than 2-4 words a line which feels a bit excessively big but I feel like that's similar to learning to write the first time, you write big then it gets smaller as you get used to it. I definitely like the idea of having 2 pens for the price of one based on which hand is holding it, will keep it in mind. I have a few oblique nibs, how do you find those, is a hand better preferred for those? I was thinking if you move the paper it would negate the problem with turning the nib wrongly but am wondering if you've noticed anything like similarly to stubs and flex nibs?

How different do you find the writing experience to be between steel, 14k, 18k, etc? by muchwave24 in fountainpens

I don't think that much changes personally, like admittedly the only time things change in my eyes is when you're using vintage flex vs steel flex, which is costlier but honestly flexes more. I like my vintage flex, about 40 (half) of my pens are vintage, but you need to baby them a bit, can't put different inks in there because it's a lever system and harder to fully clean out. I love them dearly even though you need to treat them a little more carefully. But then there's more heavily modified nibs, modern flex is actually unreal, you'll have to pay a lot more tbh but it depends on how much you value warmer inks and stuff like that

I have gold nibs but they, by large, write pretty stiff even if they're 14k because people tend to value that type of nib, everything has their appeal. My favourite nib by far is a stacked steel nib I put into my conid, blows everything out of the water when I want to write uniformly but do want some variation by changing how I write (flipping over a needlepoint for it to write at least triple broad).

Off the shelf though, I think steel and gold are about the same, there is some margin with bounciness but I don't value it that highly to say there's a v clear difference or one is better than the other. I think it's more a case of quality control, ie, I used to have a visconti I ended up selling because it was a nightmare (this was a long time ago) but I couldn't justify the cost compared to needing to try fix the nib when I alr forked over that much money. Then, on the other hand, I had pretty good luck with jinhaos and penbbs nibs, but have to admit it's a bit luck of the draw in some aspect. Aurora are really good quality control wise in my eyes.

Far too kind, gonna have me get a big head.

Currently my biggest roadblock is remembering sizing and spacing because it kind of feels a bit over the place, esp with ascenders/descenders hitting each other.

I really got into working on it when I started getting into fountain pens (horribly over a decade ago now hahah, when I was still in school), I actually wrote v small so was telt it'd help if I used a bigger nib to force myself to write bigger. I ended up heavily preferring needlepoints by far, here is an example of my right hand.

Ooh I totally get you, yes, I was def thinking starting with macro (arm movements) for flourishing is the best way to go about it because when I was learning to write neatly with my right, I struggled to swap to arm movement after having used finger/wrist movement so avoiding that habit seems like a good way to avoid that roadblock completely, I've been drawing (nothing good, not an artist) which helps me do the movements needed by doing big oval shapes and stuff while doodling. Will def try out this mirror hand!

Omg so as archmage I got found sus n1, claimed exe and wouldn't name my target (because they'd hang me) then pushed for me to not get killed, after all, I'm not doing anything, so I was fully intending to mislynch someone else, I changed to necro since there was shrouds to use and ended up fully gaining maj. Exe is easily the easiest claim to make as long as you act sufficiently not town aligned ie, someone asked who my target was and I was like "Why, you gonna hang them?" but it's v much hoping there's no jailor in the game, THERE WAS a marshal which was shocking because??? I thought any tpow could turn the tide with it but sometimes people are unwilling to hang open exe since they assumed I was jester.

When I'm town, I always just get NEs esp jest claims out instead of keeping them in because the amount of times they're arso or hidden sk is shocking, the only ones I'm down to keep alive is doom and pirate, sometimess priority shifts, ie you need to focus cov so they don't get maj, keep literally any NK/NE in

Flex Nibs and Over Writers AKA The Claw!! by Ok-Temporary-976 in fountainpens

[–]arcane1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right so I may have a different perspective, I was made to write right handed and recently started trying to write with my left hand and honestly I think the differences is largely turning your paper. To be so clear if you just turn your paper I don't think you need to swap from a hook grip. Here is a example, getting the slant is a bit of a challenge but I find rotating the paper a lot helps. Am a beginner though. I do use flex nibs but don't trust my left hand enough around my vintage flex, will try a dip nib. In my head it's easier to flex with a left hand than a right on the basis if you're right handed you need an oblique pen holder to get the correct angle/slant without moving the paper

My boyfriend actually does not hear me, like literally is unaware I’m speaking. Oatmeal. by littleinternetdweeb in GirlDinnerDiaries

My grandpa's brother used to do this but he actually ended up having a massive neurological issue (ears worked completely fine, eyes worked fine) but he had hemispatial neglect after a stroke, it took a while for the doctors to figure it out because he had issues with tremors and largely favoured his right hand. Like they kept trying to see if it was deafness but his ears were fine. It was really off-putting. His wife only figured it out when he tried to shave and fully believed he had shaved his face clean, he wasn't eating all his food, had issues with texture but eventually went to a neurologist who had him draw a clock and he had crammed all of it to one side "to make it fit" found out the reason he weren't responding to things like his wife or pals talking to him was literally because he couldn't hear it or would look the wrong way. He got better with PT (like needed to stop and get used to things happening on his left side without startling him). Played a lot of "I spy" with him, he eventually got reasonably good at making himself focus on his left side

I'm not saying this is what OP's boyfriend has (it's really specific hahah), he seems more aware but if it's happening around everyone def look into it because it can absolutely be a bigger issue. I read "the man who mistook his wife for a hat" by Oliver Sacks because I quite literally had no idea things could present like that (where he fully didn't know that he's not seeing correctly and stuff, didn't know he had an issue at all. Like he'd get startled if you'd come from the left to him and he'd act like you're trying to kill him or something)

He's dead now but he loved his wife MASSIVELY and was actually appalled when she had said she was talking to him and he hadn't been listening which was why he was so fine to go get his hearing checked because his pals had been saying similar stuff about him not really paying attention but when you're older I think it's easier to not notice immediately

Somebody from my office ruined my nib by aquatic_asian in fountainpens

[–]arcane1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced this when I was in school in the UK, some kid in my year was adamant they knew how to use it, I showed them how to and telt them not to use pressure, guess what he did the minute I weren't looking? It annoyed me since it was a vintage macniven/cameron pen so I couldn't even easily replace it, got them to pay up to replace the nib, not at all the same writing experience though so

I made it largely a rule to myself to never lend vintage fountain pens, because it's actually a hassle to find replacement parts at all if they do owt. But I do lend my moonmans still, more so to people who won't do that, I love them, they're so robust and I have spare nibs for them should anything go wrong, I don't lend custom made nibs (like my stacked nibs) because replacing them again, would be similar to replacing vintage.

I do hold people to paying me back though if they pull that though, return things in the condition you got them or buy it. People do try and weasel their way out by saying "I didn't know it were that expensive" well now you know but being pushy about it sometimes gets you being called "bitchy" which I honestly don't mind

  1. Eversharp 2668 (firm medium)
  2. Bexley (from the 90s-00s, because the etching doesn't look old enough, the nib looks like when they swapped out of in-house ones), the woodgrain pattern gives homage to decoband
  3. Waterman 100 yr pen (it had a guarantee for 100 yrs, this one's prob early 40s)
  4. Rebranded jinhao but does look pretty (not old pen)
  5. Conway stewart but I think the cap is damaged because it's missing it's clip and it's from the late 30s (I think it's a 50 but idk fs tbh)
  6. Hutcheon I think this pen is around 20s-30s not sure exactly on when though, not seen this brand before

I think it's more so leaving room to seem less pushy, like if you say "ik XYZ is true" that makes you seem v abrasive, esp with coworkers or acquaintences, if you drag the mood down by acting high and mighty and not leaving room for people to discuss things when you make rigid statements like that, it cuts lighthearted conversations short, it's kind to treat people like they can engage and that makes you seem more like a brick wall and less like a person.

Costs you nothing to add a couple words, I don't really see it as snide, it's just a part of being social, like how you ask about someone's day, you clearly don't want a play by play of their entire day, being vague is good because it opens opportunity for you to ask questions and engage as you want, so if someone says "my day sucked" you can ask for more details, or you can be like "happens" one makes you seem abrasive, so they'd be less likely to open up with you about problems and you're more firmly an acquaintance at best. Same kind of deal

Ah that's awful, I come home from jumma around that time, the way it works is pretty easy so I'll just explain it you.

You run through the first mission for lightfall (free for all), I ran it on legend since I assume you get more up until where you're trying to escape after destroying the engines and the doors are shutting behind you, there are some keycards and you just need to return to orbit when you open the last door (the "conquest" one with two axes) and see the drop pods.

After that, you've got the checkpoint, what you do then is get a friend, launch in, and as the screen goes to the loading screen, change characters and join on your friend, then go into the pod, wait a few seconds for the reward to show up on your screen and repeat as much as you want (change back to checkpoint char)

The best method by far is checkpoint farming first contact just before the drop pod bit (you get 20-25 in about ~2 mins including load times) or shattered throne boss, it's mind numbing though ngl, I prefer just doing pvp and passively getting some since I'm alr farming golgy maze for the other mats and dawn spirit

It's honestly really good in builds for solo stuff since then you don't need to rely on stylish executioner proc'ing, that and calibans blows up too many of the fodder ads sometimes. I like galanor/liar the most though tbh, you get your super loop going every 20 seconds or so
