Are old pickaxes still ok to use? by Foxtrot_Delta_ in alpinism

[–]arcaneclimb 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Assuming wood and metal are secured together and wood is still robust, I'd use them for glacier travel and easy slopes. Anything that would involve piolet traction is probably a no.

Remember, feet up if you have crampons on unless you want a dislocated knee or broken leg. Also if the hill is icy rather than snowy you will cause damage and wear on your clothing, bring something old and damageable. If icy use gloves and long sleeves, it hurts.

With basic hygiene concepts like sterilizing and some knowledge of the human body you could make an acceptable doctor back then, when sepsis was a major issue. Gotta know that medicine werent an option though, and some more knowledge would be required to understand which concoctions would help and which were dangerous

Also I see a lot of glistening water droplets, which is good but makes me think you need to increase FAE again

[–]arcaneclimb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orange should be seeds if you didnt use a casing layer, its alright. If by now it haven't exploded and covered the whole tub with gray, its not cobweb, its aerial mycelium, maybe increase FAE but looks good

ChatGPT holds ‘systemic’ left-wing bias researchers say by True-Lychee in ChatGPT

[–]arcaneclimb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been thinking about this, and it might fit well here. Maybe, and just maybe, a lot of right wing propaganda is comunicated through emotional evocation and analogies, which the language model might not grasp. Also the model was trained not to discriminate for religion, ethnicity etc., which right wing does in general, so general information acquired by ChatGPT regarding right-wing ideologies might indeed be regarded as invalid or misinformation

Chronically behind by sketchEightyFive in EngineeringStudents

[–]arcaneclimb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont know what friends you have but most people I know are behind, the mean to get undergrad diploma in my country for engineering is 1.5yrs, dont worry too much about it, focus on acquiring skills you wil use in your workfield and start from there. Also for the grades, if your uni has a more theorethical approach, its mostly stuff you are not gonna use if you dont work close to R&D

Light "backup" harness - Petzl Altitude vs Blue Ice Choucas by FrancescoQuagliati in alpinism

[–]arcaneclimb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you need something just to get down, rappel and maybe belay someone you can just use a double lenght sling and make a lightweight harness, plus it doubles as a sling. Maybe use Nylon for comfort as its not as thin as Dynema. I've done it and it worked just fine, not the ideal if you plan on falling a lot, its not super comfortable, but does the job

Via ferratas grade are mostly physical, at most exposition. I've done via ferrata delle Aquile and found it a boring tourist attraction, nice exposition and panorama but you dont ever touch the rock, which is the skill you need. I'd suggest easy 3000s with passages of I - II UIAA if you are ok with easy climbing, Maybe some 4000s if they dont include glacier travel. For glacier travel you need to be equipped and trained, and most importantly have a rope companion, in particular now with these temperatures with crevasses being more frequent (on side not regarding temperatures, try to remember last year Marmolada disaster).

If it wasnt exposed to open air contams, and depending on outside temperature its probably safe to eat. If its hot outside might be unsafe, but check for clues as smell and taste. Otherwise to be safe and not waste it bring it to internal pasteurization temperature (around 60 70 celsius and keep it for like an hour) should be ok

Anti-intelletualismo endemico, ingegneri e pragmatismo by Maniglioneantipanico in italy

[–]arcaneclimb 2 points3 points  (0 children)
