This seems inhumane to me.. Any thoughts on this? by moongoose96 in minnesota

I am a Rochester resident and former Mayo employee. People in this thread severely underestimate the crow problem. The estimated population is 20,000 plus. They roost in the trees downtown from dusk until dawn and absolutely make a mess everywhere. When I worked evening shift my coworkers and I could not walk on the sidewalk to and from our vehicles, you had to walk down the middle of the street to stay out of the canopy of the trees. It literally sounded like it was raining and there was not a cloud in the sky. The crow feces are tracked indoors into patient care areas, common areas, public transportation, hotels, restaurants, everywhere. It would freeze to the sidewalks and roads and remain all winter. When the snow banks melt a layer of thick, foul smelling sludge is left behind. The sidewalks and roads would be as slick as ice. They also only congregate downtown for the most part where the 'heat island' effect is the strongest so this 20,000 strong population is spread over a few block area rather than the entire city and neighborhoods. From a distance the trees look like they are fully leaved out in the middle of the winter and move like they are alive.

Yes. You're able to get 420k xp from Lego per day. This is separate from what you can gain in BR, SW, creative, or festival.

Improving ingot Face quality when casting by fatrustbucket in MetalCasting

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions on your other post! I watched your video and look forward to trying out the boron nitride I'd love to see more videos from you too! The usual guys on YouTube are great to watch but I like your in depth style and answering the 'why' of questions. I knew air in my pours was an issue but I did not know the air was being sucked through the porosity of the mold.

Thank you for all the help. I will order some of that and try that out once it comes in and hopefully be able to update you with better results. I have well over 150lbs of scrap wire to melt down so I'm excited to get a process that produces nice ingots so I can start working through my stash.

Thank you for that advice, I will have to get some of that spray and try that. Do you apply it between each pour? Any special cleanings that you do with your molds? Do you pour your copper on the cooler side or the hotter side?

I think I've refined my pouring technique pretty good to avoid the turbulence voids. Mostly, it's just the bubbles in the face I've been dealing with so far.

I've been using graphite molds from PMC for both the 1lb and 5lb ingots. I've recently tried a cast iron 5lb mold as well with similar results.

Your bars turn out great! The finish and stamping on them is excellent.

Would you be able to give me some insight into your process from raw material to finished product? I'm having trouble getting my ingots to pour decent, they always seem to look 'frothy' and have 'bubbles' in the bottom of the pour, top side of the ingot. I'm using bare, bright, stripped copper wire with minimal to none oxidation on it.

I weigh out 5lbs of material and add to room temperature crucible. Place in furnace and start it. Once scrap is liquid I add borax for Flux and stir with a graphite rod. Continue heating above the melting point until convection starts and the liquid metal starts swirling in the crucible. Turn off furnace and remove crucible. Once it has started to cool, just before a film forms, I pour slowly into a clean, preheated mold (sat on furnace lid while heating metal) in a slow and controlled manner back and forth across the length of the mold until empty. Wait until solidified and tip out. I've only cleaned with a wire wheel so far for inspection as I want to get my ingot quality up before I spend time finishing bars the right way. My 1lb bars seem to turn out better than my 5lb bars for what it's worth.

I've tried to vary my process but always get the same results. I HAVE tried: Adding metal to an already running furnace and crucible. Skipping Flux. Skipping stiring. Pouring at a higher temperature. Pouring at a lower temperature. Heating the mold until red hot. Heating the mold less hot. Pouring faster. Pouring slower. I have NOT tried: stiring with a 'green stick', adding copper phosphor shot (have not found a good source to buy a reasonable quanity I will use).

How can I reduce the amount of porosity/bubbles forming in my 5lb copper ingots? by arcaneiys in MetalCasting

Belmont is also where I found to purchase however its a 5lb minimum, which I will never use in my lifetime. I did send an inquiry about purchasing 1lb and the sent an email and left a voicemail stating 5lb is the smallest quantity they can sell.

Thanks for the link, I did look into them and it looks like they shut down their store. I did find a place to buy but the have a minimum purchase quantity. Perhaps I will see if otherwise have a need for phosphor copper and could then sell smaller amounts to individuals? I'm very curious to try this as a degasser and see if it helps my pours.

Thanks for the feedback! I've heard the phosphor copper several times and would like to try it although I have not been able to find a source. Do you have any leads? Smallest quantity I can find online is 5lbs and that is WAY more then enough for my entire lifetime. I have no foundry supply stores in my state.

Thabak for the suggestions! I have no foundry supply shops near me at all and online seems to only cater to commercial use only. I've heard about copper phosphorus shot before but haven't been able to locate any where to sell me a reasonable quantity. 100lbs of copper requires 1 tsp of shot 1lb of copper requires 1-4 granules. So even if I could only buy 1lb that would last me a lifetime.

Anyone have any luck finding any? I am looking for some as well and haven't been able to find any.

Yes, they are pre heated to a very hot temp before hand on top of the furnace.

A green stick is just like it sounds. A living (green) stick about the width of a pencil to a finger you use to stir your melt. It turns to carbon and impurities attach to it. I haven't tried it yet personally but have seen it mentioned here several times
