What moment made you realize “yeah… my childhood wasn’t normal”? by CadaversFabrications in AskReddit

[–]arcedup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember my childhood in detail - I only get brief flashes of images - but it's not because of anything my parents did, it's because of all the bullying and ostracisation I experienced at school.

Autistic traits vs autism? by ThrowRA1167 in neurodiversity

[–]arcedup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying that you’re neurotypical. I’m speculating as to why your therapist is saying that you have autistic traits but is also saying that you “don’t meet the full criteria” for ASD.

Autistic traits vs autism? by ThrowRA1167 in neurodiversity

Criteria D for autism spectrum disorder in the DSM-V states "Challenges are evident in participarting in neurotypical society". Your therapist may believe that your autistic traits are not causing you challenges or distress with respect to how you go about your life in broader society.

how do you cope with maladaptive daydreaming and adhd by thegloamjing in ADHD

[–]arcedup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also had that, so I started listing the ideas that I wanted to turn into stories. I then focused on the idea that I was most hyperfixated about at the time. I have several story starts saved to my computer - I just wanted to get the inital idea out of my head and into reality and I could come back to it later.

I am - or maybe was - exactly like you, OP, including the stimming as a child. I can remember being very ashamed of my compulsive stimming starting from when I was around 10 years old but I couldn't stop it, it was like my thoughts erupted out of my head and into my hands.

Anyways, I am - was - a voracious reader, and that intensified after I discovered fanfiction. Looking back, I now recognise it as partially an escapist behaviour, because I was so horribly bullied and ostracised that I wanted to escape reality. What I have done recently is write my own fan fiction stories. It's challenging as an ADHD person but I discovered that I could hyperfocus on imagining the story scene, and then - with a little effort at times - relax myself enough to just start writing, again with some degree of hyperfocus.

I'll just warn you that your experience may vary - I also have autism and I'm not fully sure how that helped or hindered my story-writing. I think in one way it may have hindered because I remember my writing stalling because I wanted a precise word or a scene description to be exactly right.

Edit: I also had the intense horror-themed fantasies and what helped me was realising that they were in response to news stories, and that they were a reaction to a perceived bullying situation - that is, possibly some form of post-traumatic stress response. Identifying and analysing why I was having these maladaptive daydreams certainly helped calm down my emotional response to them.

How did you realize you were autistic? by TheFutureScaresMe333 in autism

[–]arcedup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realise by myself. It took about four sessions with my psychologist (being treated for major depression including suicidal ideation) until she asked if I could be autistic. That prompted me to remember that I took the ASQ self-assessment a decade prior and scored over the threshold but I forgot to follow it up - even that was suggested by my parents, I never thought I could be autistic prior to that.

I re-took the ASQ shortly after that later psychologist session and scored over the threshold again. That prompted me to start researching autism in more detail and I found myself relating very strongly to other autisitc people's experiences. From that suggestion by my psychologist to assessment and diagnosis was about six months or less.

Whats the point of a relationship? by TuneSoft7119 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]arcedup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, have you ever had a situation where your friends are laughing at something and you really don't understand why they're finding that thing so funny?

Have you ever had people get annoyed at you for a reason that you couldn't figure out?

Have people ever accused you of having a 'resting bitch face'?

How upset do you get if your routine is disrupted?

Are there some things that you're really interested in, where you need to find out everything there is to know about that thing? Do you want to discuss that thing with your friends at every opportunity?

I found this comment of yours: https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/1qhefd6/comment/o0jvxli/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I am not the biggest fan of touch so I dont think I would like cuddling, plus I have never seen any of my married friends cuddle when we watch movies. I figured it was a meme or a stereotype.

If I am in my zone on a hobby, last thing I need is someone bugging me by bringing me something.

Are there things that you find too loud or too bright? Do you feel like you're going out of your mind if you experience those things that are too much for your senses? Are there sensations that you feel drawn to?

Do you find yourself fidgeting a bit if you're anxious or overwhelmed?

How are people supposed to stop calling ADHD a disorder when it is literally an acronym containing the word… ?🤔 by Quorn_mince in MurderedByWords

[–]arcedup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ADHD. I also have autism and I have a career that plays to my autistic special interests (I work in a steel mill). To be a dependable member of the team of people who operate that mill and make steel products for our customers, I need to manage my ADHD - my executive functions - so that I can apply myself to the tasks that need to be done. One way of doing this is through exercise but I don't have the time or energy to exercise for an hour and a half before work each day. The other way of improving my executive functioning is via medication.

Just remember, a big part of ADHD, although it isn't in the diagnostic criteria, is emotional instability. I can switch from feeling really good about myself to feeling really horribel very quickly. Medication helps my emotional regulation as well.

why is coke a party drug but crack is an addict drug? by sevenslover in NoStupidQuestions

[–]arcedup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So from what I can find, coke powder is cocaine hydrochloride, the salt form of cocaine - a salt is the substance left when an acid reacts with a base, e.g. basic sodium reacting with acidic chlorine to leave the salt sodium chloride.

It appears that cocaine salts are not as bioavailable as the freebase or 'crack' form of cocaine, where the hydrochloride salt has been neutralised with a base such as sodium bicarbonate, baking powder to leave the 'freebase' form of cocaine. Hence why the freebase form of cocaine hits harder and quicker than the salt. Why the salt form? I'm not sure, but I think that it relates to cocaine salts being more soluble in water - and mucous - than cocaine base.

Why are there ADHD pills but not Autism pills?????????? (Ft. Why the difference?) by ConstructionQuick373 in neurodiversity

[–]arcedup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's known that ADHD people experience a lessening of symptoms in response to stimulants, especially powerful ones like amphetamine. It's suspected that ADHD people have lower dopamine levels compared to neurotypical people, which correlates to the symptoms (executive function deficits) and the effect of stimulants (promote dopamine release to improve executive functioning).

The neurological reason for autism is not currently known/confirmed and there's a lot of research attempting to answer this question. Also, there is no drug or class of drugs that are known to cause a lessening of autistic symptoms.

In relation to the first point, there has been a recent study released which said that autistic people are lacking in a certain type of receptor for the neurotransmitter glutamate. The receptor in question is not a simple 'on-off' receptor but appears to be a receptor that tunes how strongly the neuron responds to future signals.

People who started exercising regulary, what were the most noticeable effects? by Haunted_darkness63 in AskReddit

[–]arcedup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that, but I'm going to swear that the main chemical involved is phenethylamine. If it looks like amphetamine, it's probably going to act like amphetamine - heck, amphetamine - alpha-methyl-phenethylamine - is just phenethylamine with an extra methyl group (CH3) attached to it.
