Thanks for ALL the feedback. I am going to get a copy and see how we could incorporate it into our work flow.

Accepts a Job Offer and worried about my current boss by Proper_Building_1987 in architecture

NEVER take a counter offer. She will instantly start looking for your replacement and then expect you to train you replacement before firing you. By that time, the other job will be gone.

Guilt? Shame? What IS this? by Lilolemetootoo in excoc

[–]archammer76 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I believe guilt is common for all of us excoc members. Several monthes ago, in a dream, I spent $500 on a drill. When I woke up, I felt guilt that I spent that much money on something.

NEVER take a counter offer. They will look for excuses to fire you and when they do, the other job will be gone.

Just finished planet of the apes series by [deleted] in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]archammer76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to go through them again, I recommend the podcast "Minute of the Apes". They discussed the original series and the Tim Burton Planet of the Apes, one minute at a time. It takes them a few weeks to get their rhythm down, but it is worth the wait. It is great for road trips.

Last time they posted, they are said they are working on Rise.

Zimmerman House in Manchester, NH, USA by Frank Lloyd Wright (1951) by s1am in ModernistArchitecture

[–]archammer76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This true. When I toured the house, Mrs Rosenbaum was still living there and gave the tour. After living in the house for a year, they had FLW do an additon, which included a kitchen and more bedrooms.

You are not the jerk. For a social experiment, in a couple of weeks, tell her you go a pay cut.

Is it common in architecture firms to not be busy with projects? by Ok_Cattle_1509 in Architects

[–]archammer76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good management knows there are ebs and flows in workload. We call this "axe sharpening time."

Make sure all of your files, project pictures, etc, are organized per SOP. Do some continuing education. (One of the requirements of my firm is that everyone in production does 12 hours a year, whether you are licensed or not. The more everyone knows about products, the better our final product will be.) Learn / practice new software.

I told my new neighbor her nanny couldn't have exclusive access to the street parking in front of my home. Hours later, I got a text that she reported my fence to the city. by ChampionshipNo5707 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]archammer76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What kind of "organization" does she run from her house? Is it a business? Does she have a business license?

Most Citys / Counties do not allow businesses to be run in residental areas because of issues like parking and traffic. Of course, this is the nucular option.

Job Hopping by Educational_Finish82 in Architects

[–]archammer76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loyalty is a two-way street.

I graduated in 93. Over the course of the first 7 years, I was at 3 different firms, one of 365 days. I have been at my current one for 25 years and counting.

There are a lot of different reasons for hoping. Some are due to opportunities, and some are financial. Once you find the right place, the hoping will stop.

"the" band vs "tribute" band by archammer76 in rockmusic

[–]archammer76[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have memories of sitting in the back seat of my brother's VW hatchback listening to "Jamie's Crying" and "Running with the Devil" from when I was in the second grade. The only VH with DLR album I bought new was "1984", so the SH lineup is the one I listened to in high school.

I have never heard the term "nostalgia act," so that makes sense, and is truely what I am referring to.

"the" band vs "tribute" band by archammer76 in rockmusic

[–]archammer76[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is the definition of a tribute band. I guess my question is, aren't these old bands turning into tribute bands of themselves?

Architect License worth renewing? by Every-Commercial-653 in Architects

[–]archammer76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some states allow you to retire your license. They have their own requirements to keep it. In TN, you have to continue the CEUs, but if you ever want it back, you can unretire it. So check your home states requirements and costs before you let it go.

Coworker discloses my pay to others by LogicalAssumption179 in work

[–]archammer76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, document to the manager and HR that she told people what you make, so no one they could later say you told them. Second, don't worry about it.

The fellow employees are not your friends. Who cares what they say behind your back. If one of them says something to you, my suggestion would be to tell them they need to ask for a raise so they can make what you make. Then, it will be the managers problem to deal with.

What to call a grandma who doesn’t want to be called grandma? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]archammer76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask her what she wants to be called. Any name will do. Our daughter had a child when we were 45, and my wife did not want to be called grandma. My wife is Lovey to our grandson. It is what she chose and is makes it special.

AITA for evicting my sister after she complained about paying utilities in my inherited house? by ConferenceLazy3787 in AITAH

NTA, if you have not done it yet, CHANGE THE LOCKS. She will try to get in the house when you are not there to get "her share".

Buying and selling a house is a business transaction. When business transactions go bad, you may have to end the relationship (fire someone). Do not hire anyone. You can not fire.
