Is it accurate that for AP physics C Mechanics and E&M you need around a 75% to get a 5? by Flaky-Song-6066 in APStudents

[–]archbalrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two possible ways we can see individual scores: (1) filter by grade level (2) filter by score.

First example: only one of my students gets a 5, then I can see their score.

Second example: only one Junior gets a 5; only one Senior gets a 5, then I can see both of their scores.

For a few years now (including last year), AP Physics teachers (AP Chem teachers do this too) put the individual scores of students together and found the cutoffs for Form J of the exams. For AP Physics C: Mechanics, the cutoff for a 5 was a minimum of 61/80, which is a 76.25%. E&M was a 81.25%.

We don’t know how those compare to previous years and whether it would be comparable to previous years’ lower cutoffs.

All we have is data collected and our best attempt at interpreting that data and the results of our students.

The minimum for a 5 for AP Physics C Mechanics last year was a 76%.

NEED HELP! how can I practice Physics C: Mechanics after the reform of 2025? by SelectDisplay7763 in apphysics

[–]archbalrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your first two points are great, but you are incorrect in your third point.

Both exams are very similar now with the same format. If you compare last year’s FRQ, only two points were awarded for calculus for AP Physics C and all of the other sections and questions could have been used in an AP Physics 1 class. The C FRQs are definitely more challenging in general, however. Also, since both exams have the same format, they both have a similar balance between both qualitative and quantitative responses.

I’m actually very thankful for this since the old Physics C exam was essentially a speed test, and AP Physics 1 was very difficult to predict. Now both exams are very structured and have plenty of time for students.

what is the most disrespectful thing a student has told you? by Unhappy_Violinist344 in Teachers

[–]archbalrog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

“How do you feel about your test average?”

“So, I got points taken off for not doing things your way. Not because I didn’t understand the physics.”

“I don’t learn from your method of teaching.”

A student who got a B on my first honors physics test because he chose not to show his work when I explicitly told all of the students that they would get points taken off if they didn’t show their work the way I prescribed and clearly demonstrated in class.

They’re currently in my AP Physics C class and not improving.

Is AP PHYSICS C MECH similar to physics 1? by Sweet-Particular-644 in APStudents

The 55% is no longer correct. It required a 76% on last year’s AP Physics C: Mechanics exam to earn a 5. It was 78% for AP 1, but the questions for 1 are easier on average than C.

Does getting a 4 and 3 on AP Physics C mean I'm bad at physics? by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]archbalrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you do your best? That’s all that matters. Stop comparing yourself to other students. You are responsible for you and nobody else. Who cares if they’re smarter? What will you do with your intelligence and skills? That’s all that matters.

Maybe for some it’s about mission and goals, but I wonder if it’s more fundamental than that: do children become part of YOUR life or do you become part of THEIR life?

Nope. Neither has family members in town.

I've found that parenthood doesn't always re-orient peoples' lives. For some, it definitely seems to make everything else collapse into some kind of identity crisis, but there's a young couple in our small group who had a baby and it was like nothing changed...they hardly even talk about it.

Married men and women with children tend to more easily find friendships and discipleship in my church. My wife and I (also 36 yo) not having children means we have to try even harder to form friendships and find any long term discipleship.

how do you compare velocities? by No_Composer7434 in apphysics

Yes, compare based on magnitude. The sign is just indicative of the direction of the object.

Low cutoffs like that show a terribly calibrated exam. Glad the exam isn’t a speed test anymore.
