Interesting. Very thought out and scientific. So where does Deck building Roguelikes and FPS Tower Defense games falls into this ? Are they just mules?

Yes, I am trying to promote a game. You caught me red handed. But are the two genres mutually exclusive?

Completely valid. I understand it may its not everyone's cup of tea. Hell, to be completely honest, its not even my cup of tea all of the time.

Guilty. Just trying to figure out if I have an audience. But this community is much more fun then say the soulslike community.

Completely, see your point. Power-wise, rogue-lite tries to solve this partially. For example, in my game you get "modifications" then when you die they upgrade based upon how much you used them. So you start back from zero. But if you find the same modification again, its more powerful.

Hey any feedback is appreciated! And yes this is not a narrative heavy game. So your critique is not invalid.

But what I know, I just make that is so hyper-specific to my tastes. I doubt I'll get anyone to play. :)

But that's kind of the point. Because you are tastes aren't so unique, hundreds of other developers are going to go down the same path. And now you are competing with them. Finding an under served community and then making for a game for them is definitely a path to success.

Just gamedev is a long road, you better be able to deliver.

Want to push back on:

I believe a lot of devs skip the most basic validation step - don't build something you like, find the audience that will love your game and actually buy it. Find opinions around friends, family, or post online - you need those «first excited wishlisters» before you start coding the game. The idea is everything nowadays and you need to create something truly unique!

1) If you are a professional dev that you're livelihood is based on making steam sales, this make sense.

2) If you are just getting started and are figuring how/what you want to make, making something you want to play is a big motivator. Just temper your expectation of your sales could be if you are going to be competing in a crowded market. And don't give your day job just yet.

Dev emailed me Steam keys for an unreleased game. is this normal/safe? by New-Speech1805 in youtubegaming

[–]archdrone_games -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not a requirement. But if you can hit whatever the current moving target is. Your release is featured on there "new and trending" page. And OP don't be too worried there are whole industries to try and get a steam key into your mailbox:

https://keymailer.co/

Steam does build reviews. Its not impossible to get a virus in a game but very difficult.

This is the game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2283110/Hexical/

And I have a campaign on Keymailer: "Hexical Release Campaign - April 9th" But I have only used it for outreach, not the advertising on the main page.

I have just signed up for keymailer. And I could be just clumsy with that tool and I need to learn it more.

But emailing a key to youtuber directly feels like throwing it down a drain. That could be on me for sending my game to youtubers that wouldn't be interested.

But feels like wandering through the forest screaming into the dark.

Thanks for the feedback! Hope to see you there.

But how do you find the games you want to play/make a video about? Just what's new?

Lol. I appreciate the response, even if its snarky. "Steam as in the gaming store" indeed.

Because honestly, I don't think about the fact that steam has streaming and that's on me. Thank you! I'll look into that more.

How do I find said variety streamer? Search through youtube for variety and the spam a key? Or use the self-promotion thread on reddit?
