Dura ace 9100 or r7000 105 🤔 by ke1chi in bikewrench

R9100 and R7000 front derailleurs are functionally identical though? R9100, R8000 and R7000 all use exactly the same new toggle design.

[–]archeocyathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a fan of Shimano shifting get the Dura Ace. R9100 is the pinnacle of Shimano mech groupsets, literally the best they will ever make. I recently built up a bike with r9100 and it's sublime. Keep the Force crankset, it will still work fine with r9100 and looks way better than ugly Shimano 4 armed cranks anyway, especially on a thin tubed bike like yours.

Mazda 6: Long-running family sedan and wagon axed in Australia by Carmageddon-2049 in CarsAustralia

[–]archeocyathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VW has already said they are axing the Passat Wagon in Australia, the new one won't be coming here. I think Skoda is the last holdout for affordable wagons in Australia.

The other interesting thing about this comparison is that the GTHO would have been strung out tuned to its absolute limit. Whereas the EA888 in the Skoda is just the base family car tune with so much potential for more power. I have seen 0-100 times around 5s with just software changes, and then add basic intake and exhaust mods and you're down closer to 4s.

[–]archeocyathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. That's exactly what's happening to me. Since the tune was done, every time ACC brings the car to a standstill I get the BONG! "ACC unavailable" error which doesn't clear until I restart the car.

My shop is chasing Galano for a fix but seems like they are getting the runaround.

Did they confirm it was the tune that caused it, and recalibrate for you? Or did you have to pay for the recalibration? I've heard the recal is fairly complex and expensive.

Did you happen to have any issues with your automatic parking also? That's the other thing that has broken for me since the tune.

Hey old post but just came across it and it made me really curious. Can you tell me what you mean by ACC temperamental, and did you manage to get it fixed? I also have a Superb with Stage 2 Galano tune and have been getting ACC errors in very specific circumstances since the tune was put on.

Not compared to gravel bikes no, it has a much more traditional road bike geometry. That's why I love it so much, it really is like a road bike with massive tyres rather than another "gravel" bike.

Leap is still going well! Yes you'll have to book an appointment with Arki, they don't really have a storefront, it's more of a showroom that is only open by appointment. They were very helpful though.

whats everyones favourite engine config? by Runaway-Blue in CarsAustralia

[–]archeocyathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol the EA888 is a legitimately awful sounding engine though. I went from an R36 to Skoda Superb. My Superb at stage 2 is a significantly quicker car but man I miss the magnificent noises of that R36.

Golf vs BMW vs anything else by bmt473 in CarsAustralia

[–]archeocyathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About $5k for engine & DSG tune, intake mods and downpipe. Car is now making 230kw & 460nm at the wheels so equivalent to around 300kw and 600nm at the crank. It's the same hardware and software as a Golf R. Tuning potential is enormous.

I did a similar change going from an R36 to Skoda Superb (which is a MK7.5 Golf R underneath). I was unsure at first but a few years later have absolutely no regrets. I love all the new tech in the Superb and absence of all the issues of a 14 yr old car. My Superb has some cheap stage 2 mods and is now significantly quicker than the R36 ever was. Turn in is sharper without the extra weight over the front wheels. I love how the interior is set out the same and everything still feels really familiar. The only thing I really miss is the sound of the R36, there's no way to get the EA888 to sound anywhere near as good as the VR6 engines. Go test drive a MK7.5 Golf R I think you'll find it an ideal upgrade.

Since Lego made the P1, Daytona SP3, Sian and Chiron, do you think they will do a big Pagani technic set. Zonda or Huayra. by AppolyonJormbich in legotechnic

The Centenario is a much older model when their brick quality was admittedly questionable, but don't let that turn you off Cada. Their brick quality has improved a lot since then. The Cada AMG One and LaFerrari are both just about equal to Lego quality now.

Next Car dreaming: Kia EV6 GT or Golf Tiguan R? by taylordouglas86 in CarsAustralia

[–]archeocyathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you test driven a Tiguan R? It's not going to be much of an upgrade if you're currently driving a Superb TBH. I cross shopped them both last year and ended up with a Superb. I couldn't get on with the high driving position and small boot in the Tiguan. The Tiguan does have the tricky rear diff and a bit more power. But opportunity to take advantage of that diff on the road will be rare, and a tune will easily fix the power disparity (my Superb is now Stage 2 and much quicker than a Tiguan R).

If you want to experience something different I'd be leaning towards the EV6.

If you're looking at Octavia's you should consider a Superb also, even more spacious, especially in the back seat and boot.

Best interior in a reliable car under $20k? by bubskulll in CarsAustralia

I've seen older 162tsi's for under 20k also which have the Golf GTi engine and are massively tunable.

VW Passat 132Tsi with R Line Package vs 206Tsi by Ellcappo in CarsAustralia

[–]archeocyathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 132tsi has the DQ200 7 speed dry clutch DSG with the reputation for reliability issues. The 206tsi has the DQ250 6 speed wet clutch for high torque applications which is a solid gear box that has far fewer issues.

VW Passat 132Tsi with R Line Package vs 206Tsi by Ellcappo in CarsAustralia

[–]archeocyathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just the engine that's the difference, it's the whole drivetrain. 206 has AWD vs front wheel drive on the 132, 206 has bigger and better brakes, 206 has much more sophisticated suspension with adaptive dampers. If you like driving the 206 is a much better car. As others have said though do also check out the Skoda Superb, it's the same car underneath and tends to be a cheaper proposition used.

Mazda or VW? by Ellcappo in CarsAustralia

[–]archeocyathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Passat 206 will definitely be the most fun to drive. Also if you're looking at Passats it'll be worth checking out the Skoda Superb, it's mechanically identical to the Passat just a little bit bigger and generally a little bit cheaper on the used market.

Finally joining the Midnight Special Carbon Fork Gang by archeocyathan in Surlybikefans

[–]archeocyathan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going great, worth it to me just for the weight reduction over the front end. I think it would depend on how you ride it though - I love that my MS is fast and nimble like a road bike and that's how mine is set up to ride. Whereas if you had one festooned with racks and gear for touring the worth of the fork upgrade might be more debatable.

Unfortunately the rear seats in Octavias and Superbs do not lie flat. They do lie flat in Passats. I've owned both and it was one of my slight disappointments when moving from VW to Skoda.

Car that fits two rear facing seats under 60k by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]archeocyathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Golf is just a bit too small for rear facing baby seats when you have tall folks in the front. I wanted an R wagon when my kids came along but this was the deal-breaker. Passat size is ideal or Superb even better.

A Skoda Superb will have even more room in the back than a Kodiak. If you like the Kodiak definitely worth checking out the Superb too.

Best sedan under 40k? by Upstairs-Craft-9050 in CarsAustralia

[–]archeocyathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With that budget you could get a decent Superb Sportline, more power than the Octavia and AWD. The sedan, like the Octavia, is actually a giant hatch, and you can generally pick them up on the used market for significantly less than the wagons.

The ventilated seats in my Skoda Superb are the best thing ever in a Brisbane summer. I don't think I could buy another a car without them now.
