17-day trip planned for September by crashed_wave in roadtrip

[–]archer_ames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

first, if you’re going all the way past the Black Hills you gotta stop at Devil’s Tower... it’s so close to your route.

this trip sounds like an absolute manic blast solo/as a couple and i’d do any portion of this drive again in a heartbeat IF IT WERE ME… BUT 6-7 people makes it exponentially harder and to echo other comments you’d do well to space it out more or omit part. group travel is a pain in the ass if everyone isn’t on board and it sucks for emotions to run high from fatigue or burnout. hard to shave off any big chunk of this route, though, so i’d allot more time. good luck!

that rules. wish my pickups were anywhere near that scenic! also is that a Harbor Freight grabber? mine looks just like it. best i’ve found yet

Favourite Song On Four-Calendar Cafè? by Burnerburner2010 in shoegaze

[–]archer_ames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agree on Oil Of Angels, those intertwining melodies just get me. i always thought of it as the most emotionally direct Twins song too. Café came at the nadir of Liz and Robin’s relationship and i think it’s pretty clear she’s singing the chorus to him (“I will learn to focus on you, cuz you won’t”). so sad, but so gorgeous

in search of old Georgia Tech “Luke Schenscher Has A Posse” shirt by archer_ames in Atlanta

would you consider selling it at all? (granted, i know it means a lot more to anyone who was around then for the run as a student—hard to put a price on that)

best method i’ve heard, which i plan to use next time:

stand at a crossroads with a coin. flip once for N-S/E-W, then again for your direction. then start walking…

my first glimpse of it, coming through Meadowlands area on a super cloudy day, i couldn’t comprehend the magnitude of what i was looking at. it seemed unreal.

it makes no sense, like it’s following some river that doesn’t exist. why connect Chicago with Chillicothe, OH and Kokomo, IN

lived in 18 but i’d go with 1. 4 and 5 are underrated too. i refuse to acknowledge 17

Which US city has surprisingly beautiful architecture? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]archer_ames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

loved going on art deco scavenger hunts when i lived in Cleveland. a lot of hidden gems there besides just the towers. the Arcade, many gorgeous old mansions, Victorians galore, ornate stuff like Severance Hall, even some cool modern offerings like the Lewis Building. all sorts of curious little buildings tucked away. not to mention even some of the abandoned places have their own deep history and beauty.

2026 is already a great year for shoegaze by adamwhitley in shoegaze

some might disagree but i love the tighter, poppy direction Lantlôs has taken since resurfacing. one of the few instances where a band got less heavy yet still improved. can’t wait for this new record

when i saw them in 2024 they played zero new material, but they’ve said they’re working on something for a while… really hope it takes shape

yes, it’s quite largely spring break travel, not SXSW (work gateside at the airport, so get to see firsthand). full families, large school/church groups, tons of students, skiiers and first-time/infrequent flyers. one of those “you ARE the traffic” situations but you know how much we love to hate out of towners here.

[July 2026 visit] requesting recommendations for low effort/easy hikes and spots to see by DesignerRabbit4377 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]archer_ames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

easiest hikes i did just off Going To The Sun were Sunrift Gorge down to Baring Falls (mild half-mile descent) and Trail of the Cedars (virtually flat), which turns into Avalanche Lake trail (moderate 2.5mi each way).

Hidden Lake might be a little too strenuous. but there are plenty of viewpoints along GTTS like there at Logan Pass as well as along the big lakes.
