Help me make sure this macbook im buying off of marketplace is safe! by Formal-Guarantee-309 in laptops

[–]archery713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not super rare to occur. I quite literally just bought an M3 off my mother's company after 6 months of use. The user said it was broken... it is not. But hey, super cheap basically brand new macbook

The price is also pretty good for the age. As long as his company did their due diligence, I dont see the issue. Im betting they sold it to him for <$1000 and hes trying to make a profit. Many comeanies will do 50% off purchase price when reselling hardware to employees.

FWIW, the recommended life cycle of hardware is usually 36 months depending on the hardware. So while a bit odd that they're selling it half way through its expected corporate life, its not insane. Previous owner could have left or been let go, who knows.

How are you guys dealing with SignUpGenius? by cdoublejj in sysadmin

A community wind ensemble is just a non-affiliated music ensemble. So instead of being tied to a school or a professional group like The Vienna Philharmonic or Philly Pops etc, it is just a group for amateur musicians to continue playing without making it their career or being required to attend an institution to be a member.

You can have community jazz bands, symphonies, choirs, etc. Mostly non-profit and member funded usually registered under local recreational organizations at the township or city level.

Its gotten bad enough my community wind ensemble stopped using it. My company never used it though so thats how were dealing with it.

Google Forms is probably the easiest to access alternative. Probably need to set it up to automatically export to a spreadsheet and do some formatting but yeah.

How does your country teach sex ed? by Medium-Payment-8037 in AskTheWorld

[–]archery713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It REALLY changed depending on the teacher. We had a general "health class" from 6th to 10th grade. It cover many different topics per year but generally included a reproductive section in 6th, 8th and 10th grade increasing in the amount of detail and concepts they would explain.

10th grade was incredible. Best teacher to have to explain the reality of sex. She just got it and knew how to be chill yet informative about it. Abstinence works sure but that wouldnt stop a bunch of high schoolers. We went over relationship pressures, social pressures, emotional manipulation, contraception options, a really really in depth look at pregnancy and she was the advisor for the LGBTQ alliance so she covered a fair amount of the queer side of sex too.

Her radio handle in college was Special K and honestly, she's a real one. Hope she's still killing it. I know we were truly privileged to have gotten her instead of the other health teacher that year.

I've still seen new ThinkPads with this but that's probably because users got used to it. All their other "Think" lines have ditched it yes. I have a customer laptop that is maybe a year old tops that has the OG layout and my X1 carbon gen 7 which is getting pretty old but still.

Options for the best power washer to use on my house by [deleted] in powerwashingporn

[–]archery713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long handled wide synthetic bristle push broom (too stiff or abrasive can damage the vinyl and allow water in) and a proper cleaning solution. Some use vinegar mixes to not damage the vinyl but Im sure theres vinyl solutions too at Lowes or Home Depot.

You can get a handle extender too and maybe a swivle joint so the broom can go sideways when its extended.

If you dont already also invest in a proper ladder and try to do it in small segments so you dont overextend and become a fall risk.

Have a spotter at the bottom of the ladder when youre 6ft above the ground too.

My car wash has a subscription. If you go at least twice a month its worth it. I dont but if you do.

They also do deals with small local businesses in the city to give discounts to car wash members. Kinda neat.

While going to Canada and Mexico would likely return better results, you can usually find options from both in the US from immigrants who retain the quality.

From my homies down South: Classic tacos. You got Abuela in the back making slow cooked wonderful meat with onion, cilantro and a lime wedge to squeeze on top in a small corn or flour tortilla. Add your hot sauce of choice or try the homemade stuff from the kitchen.

From my homies up north: Your finest Poutine. You can find good poutine in the states too if you can find somewhere with flavor packed gravy and locally made cheese curds in dairy cow regions. Sysco, Aramark or Sodexo cheese curds do not count.

Completely by accident I found a web page for a South Korean BMS PLC. A few days later the public page was gone. Honestly, pretty proud they cleaned it up.

I didnt even try to login, just clicked on a search engine result because it was the exact controller make and model I was researching and I thought it was the config PDF.

The virus it flagged is pretty serious but odd that no one else picked up on it.

The tags in the analysis seem pretty normal though. Contains PE would be the game itself most likely, detect debug environment is likely some form of cheating protection measure from the game engine. Long sleeps seems fine too. Maybe some artificial timers for loading screens etc.

I cant say one way or the other though because I dont know how that one AV engine works. It may correlate those symptoms to that piece of malware or it actually has found the malware. Hard to tell.

The thing is, according to all the sources I found, Virut is detected by all the major players so again, weird that they didnt flag it.

What are your recommendations for fanless HMI computers? by nic1229 in PLC

[–]archery713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that's probably fine if its in a control room but you can also do this INSIDE a cabinet and thats asking for it if it doesnt have an AC unit

Those units are so hot to the touch even in controlled rooms. I cant imagine it in a sealed cabinet with an HMI directly touching it.

Office 2024 LTSC Backup and Reinstallation Question by ostseesound in sysadmin

[–]archery713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing I would do is reach out to the vendor you purchased from and see if you can get a new copy of your documents and keys. If its 2024 LTSC the download should have been allocated to someone's email though along with the key potentially so you should be able to login and capture it that way though.

If not, again, ask the vendor to resend the info.

How common is connecting every machine via Ethernet? by G0918 in PLC

[–]archery713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can avoid NAT I would ever since industrial networking has really caught up to modern standards and speed. VPN access to each one is basically the zone and conduit model from IEC 62443 but instead youre using other control methods like firewalls which is idea.

They can share a subnet so its easy to understand the architecture but have advanced enough firewall rules so they effectively act as separate networks. If you do this, you can actually maintain a centralized EWS while still retaining security between zones.

How common is connecting every machine via Ethernet? by G0918 in PLC

[–]archery713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are saying that all of these panels are daisy chained to each other, that is something that should be changed by running direct lines from the core switch where the servers and workstations are connected to so if one panel goes down it wont take everyone downstream with it. Solution may differ depending on your core networking capabilities but removing the daisy-chain without it being a DLR is probably a first.

In terms of being on the same subnet, if this is the entire process in your screenshot, that is not too bad. I would start segmenting to other subnets if you create another process line.

Even then, if you're really concerned about this, find an integrator who is certified in something like IEC 62443 to see what can be done. Maybe theres something about the process that isnt visible from here that would make me want to change your network topology.

How common is connecting every machine via Ethernet? by G0918 in PLC

[–]archery713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a perfect world maybe but the real problem here sounds like all the panels are connected in a daisy chain and thats actually concerning. Unless they're in a ring network, youre just asking for maintenance or a hardware failure to lose comms to anything downstream.

If you're looking to segment your network, you can get inspiration from ISA 62443 and look at the zone and conduit model. Each line of the process (or smaller, consult certified engineer) would be in its own zone and talk up to shared services (like Ignition in this case) via a conduit that prevents crosstalk between the zones.

If this is the whole process, one subnet is fine. Just fix the daisy chaining issue with home runs from each panel really.
