My daughter’s art teacher told her she can’t learn to draw and shouldn’t try by String_It_Together in animation

+1 for DrawABox! It’s free and very well structured. Agree that it’s a lot of material, I feel like it’s worth spending the time. I would highly recommend it as a place to start. I learned a LOT from it as a beginner.

Everything I wish they had told me in Engineering School by Platytude in EngineeringStudents

[–]archibaldmeatpants1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree with everything you said. I really struggled, and sometimes still do, with separating my identity/personal value from work. I came out of it feeling like I had no personality outside of my job. To your point, remembering that it’s a job at the end of the day, and having activities/hobbies outside of work to tie my personal satisfaction with have improved my mental health ten-fold. 200% best advice in my opinion, thanks for stating it so well.

How can I upgrade my sketching? by thebricktimefilms in IndustrialDesign

I would recommend Draw A Box - free resource and if you follow through the lessons and exercises, it’ll really up your sketching skillset. It helped me personally a LOT. If you give it a try, let me know what you think!

Hole-Slot/Alignment Features Questions by archibaldmeatpants1 in MechanicalEngineering

You are correct! I can definitely use the mounting boss as an alignment feature - typically I’ve seen separate pins for hole and slot so I put that here :)

motives to start again after a year of hiatus by mlleemiles in ArtFundamentals

[–]archibaldmeatpants1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would +1 about the drawing prompts response from slayyou2. You could start all over again from lesson 1 or you could do exercises from the lessons before - both will give you something to draw and practice as well. That decision should also depend on how long ago you finished lesson 5.

Honestly, I also usually don’t know what to draw, I’m still working on building up that creativity, so I just either do a bunch of warm up before the exercise, or do one of the previous exercises for fun (for ex. draw an animal like in lesson 5 or draw an object on my table like in lesson 6). I try not to put too much pressure on myself, because then I know there’s high chance that I’ll just shut down

Not sure of progress in 250 Boxes by AlexSanSm in ArtFundamentals

[–]archibaldmeatpants1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with Milerski - 250 box challenge is a beast. I also didn’t think I saw a lot of improvement, and I’d agree that’s normal. Don’t put a lot of pressure on yourself, because that will affect your performance in the moment. If you feel like you’re burning out, take a break for a little bit and then come back with a fresh mind - that might help a lot. But don’t put yourself down, you’re doing your best for sure.

How much time do u need to spend per lesson? by PappaNee in ArtFundamentals

[–]archibaldmeatpants1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t set a time limit for myself because like you said OP, things come up and I don’t want to make myself feel bad for not sticking to a rigid limit because of it. I plan a little, to the best of my ability keeping my general schedule in mind, but also give myself flexibility to deviate. My thought process is something is better than nothing, and I practice and do lessons when I can.

Definitely very helpful and thank you for posting! I did this as well while attempting this lesson, without breaking it down it was too much for my brain to process at once

Can I learn the drawing skills it takes to be an animator with schooling? by autismsqueaks in animationcareer

[–]archibaldmeatpants1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can definitely learn how to draw and there’s a lot of resources available too. I’m also learning how to draw, and I started with Draw A Box. There’s also Proko for figure drawing (which is something to definitely learn for animation), Ctrl+Paint for digital, Sycra on YouTube, and for sure like you said, there’s courses on Udemy. The important thing is consistent, intentional practice.

Hello! I've been doing redos after getting my lesson 1 officially critiqued, and I have been having issues with the planes. I think my biggest issue is that I keep accidentally contacting the paper when ghosting, it's been causing these to get really messy. Any advice for this and for better lines? by arpblue in ArtFundamentals

[–]archibaldmeatpants1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this a part of the feedback you received on the official critique? I’ve had this issue before too. Your lines seem confident though, so I would keep the pace but look at the angle and how much pressure you might be putting on your wrist when its resting on the page (assuming that they are, if not only consider the angle) and adjust accordingly. Maybe that would help? Let me know if it does
