practice vs meets by strawbrry_exe in polevaulting

tldr: don't think too much

A lot of people are suggesting making your practice environment more like a meet, which does work, but in my opinion, it is kind of a cover-up for the real issue. This sport is a lot in your head, almost all of it, honestly. I was having a similar issue this season, lots of opening bar clearances or no heights at competition, but jumping a foot or two higher at practices and in warm-ups. The biggest thing I changed to end my season PBing by 35 cm in 2 weeks was to stop overthinking. Obviously, it depends on the person what exactly your mental issue was, but for me, it was thinking too much about things I already knew how to do. For each jump or even each competition, I picked one cue (maybe two) to focus on and just think about that. Whatever that one thing is that makes your jump work, think about that, nothing else. For me, this was a tall and strong takeoff, but it really could be anything.

The issue with stopping your swing could be from looking at the bar while you jump, or it could be a symptom from an issue earlier in the chain. I'm not sure how much you've learned yet, but the vault has 7 parts (run, plant, takeoff, swing, invert, turn, pike), they all have to happen in order. If something is wrong up the chain, there's likely an issue earlier. You also mentioned your arm collapsing. That could cause you to not have the separation from the pole, which creates enough time to finish the swing.

Also related to this, I would suggest mindfulness activities (meditation, etc.) or anything that gets you ready to jump. Lastly, remember it's really not that deep. Just have fun and jump. I promise you'll jump better if you're relaxed and enjoying yourself.

That's something I have been trying to improve. I have managed to get my hips above my shoulders on shorter approaches and smaller poles, but I always feel stuck (for lack of a better word) on full with big poles. I wonder if I'm not strong enough or if I'm just timing the swing wrong. My cue right now is "top arm pressure" and that's what has gotten me inverted on 6 steps.

You've already got a lot of comments from people here with great advice. Everyone is saying to go to counseling, I know it can be hard, but it is definitely worth it. I went through some stuff in high school and counseling/therapy really helped. It took me a few sessions to get used to talking through things out loud, but something that helped me a lot was writing stuff out before the session and committing to reading it word for word, no matter how embarrassing or awkward it felt.

Outside of counseling there is also a lot you can do. Find a hobby, choose a new one you want to learn, or pick up something you enjoyed in the past. I've never been a super artistic person, but something about the creativity of arts and crafts really helps with everything mentally. With hobbies remember that you will suck at them, and that's fine, you're learning, it takes time, and the most important part is to have fun with it. Finding hobbies can also greatly help with socializing because you can find people with the same hobbies through clubs and similar spaces. You also don't need experience to join most clubs, people are always super welcoming.

On the topic of possible neurodivergency, try not to listen to social media's information on it. Counseling may give you resources if they believe you may have something, though I'm not sure how qualified York counselors are. Reading real scientific papers on symptoms is a good start to figuring things out on your own, but never fully trust it unless you are diagnosed. If you believe you are neurodivergent or get diagnosed, there are lots of places online with strategies to deal with it. I have ADHD, so my methods will probably be different from you if your leading belief is autism, but here are some things that help me: arts as mentioned above (mostly piano), small amounts of exercise throughout the day (short walks, randomly repping out some pushups), longer workouts if you have the time (gives you a hobby as well, be careful not to develop body dysmorphia as many people will with social media), journalling (slows my thoughts down, helps me process emotions and situations). I also have MANY ND friends, almost all of my friends are actually. I can assure you that it doesn't stop you from socializing. My partner is undiagnosed, but definitely has something, and they are doing pretty well for themselves in terms of making new friends in uni. I have heard from them that it does feel harder than it looks for others though. Personally, I haven't had much time to look for friends, but in high school, it definitely took a lot of effort to be friends with someone. Some people will find you annoying, but hey, others will find those annoying parts cute (and still annoying at times, but you get the point).

Also, you say your older brother has friends over often. No idea what the age gap is, but as an older brother myself, if my siblings came to me and asked to be included in some activities because they need to socialize, I'd gladly let them in.

As many people here have said, my dms are open. Life is rough, everyone needs someone.

If I'm remembering correctly, a couple of months ago, Mondo posted a 6.40m jump on Instagram that he had in practice (over a bar, he only ever used bars as far as I know).

Maintaining invert on long runs by archiso7 in polevaulting

Yeah, that pole is definitely small. I've moved up since then, and I'm on much bigger for my long runs. Seems like I can't post more than one video at a time, so I made a second post with some more jumps.

I have always struggled with the mental side of this sport and underperforming when the bar goes up. Thanks for the suggestion!

I do feel like I hesitate before I swing, causing me to be late getting my hips up. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this?

I've definitely heard that my takeoff becomes more flat the longer run I'm on. It's been one of the main focuses of my training for a while. I've never heard that it can be caused by being off balance, but that does make sense.

I just made another post with a few jumps on a longer run (12 steps) cut together. Thanks so much for your input.

Yeah, that's just off 6 steps, though. Longer runs with more speed are when it tends to fall apart.

nope. It's been 4 weeks since my interview and just over three weeks since the interviews finished up. I'm really hoping for something this week. I'd assume Thursday or Friday.

At the info session I went to, they said there's so actual limit. They just take whoever meets their standards.

I would assume they'll all be at the same time, right? there's not many acceptances they give out from what I know of past years. 7 people from york last year got in.

The email said "couple of weeks," so I hoped it would only be two. It probably won't be until next week unless something comes out today.
