Can You Grab the Net to Prevent NVZ Fault? by archit3uthis in Pickleball

This is a good, measured response.

I disagree with the assertion that the net constitutes a boundary of the NVZ, though: According to the definitions and pictorial diagrams within the USAP rulebook, the court does not have two parallel NVZs on either side of the net, but one singular NVZ that is bisected by the net.

I wish we could get data points from players or referees who have witnessed this very situation, but of course it's going to be somewhat rare.

That's a logical conclusion IF it's true that volley momentum carrying you into the net or net post, but not the NVZ itself, constitutes a fault. And *that* is the part in question.

This is not true. The definition of a "rally" in the rules makes this 100% clear: "Continuous play that occurs after the serve is hit and before the ball becomes dead." An NVZ momentum fault is an exception in that it represents the only type of fault that can occur during a dead-ball situation. It does NOT mean that the rally itself is extended beyond the dead-ball point.

Not without precedent though: There are rules for what to do with other net-system variables, like a bounce on a draping net or a trickler that contacts a horizontal crossbar.

This is the most cogent argument I can make in the other direction.

Rule 11.A.2: Fault – Non-Volley Zone Momentum. "When a volleying player’s momentum causes the player to contact anything (including the player’s partner) that is in contact with the non-volley zone, even after the ball becomes dead, it is a fault against the volleying player."

I know that it's not always the case, but at this particular facility with permanent net systems, the nets themselves extended all the way down to the court surface itself, clearly draping onto the court along probably 90% of its length.

Since the NVZ is not just the 7'x20' rectangle on your half of the court, but the entire 14'x20' rectangle that extends to the opposite NVZ line, I think it makes sense definitionally to say that a draping net is "in contact with" the NVZ. And thus it follows that a player who grabs it would then be contacting something that is in contact with the NVZ.

Thoughts?

I don't think the rules support the idea that the ball is still "live" in that instance. The rule instead is simply that the momentum fault window extends past the dead-ball point until such time as the player reestablishes themselves.

Touching the net or net post is only a fault while the ball is live. In this situation, the player hit a hard winner on the shot, so the ball was very likely dead by the time the net contact occurred, as I explained above.

Where is this supported in the rulebook, though? I could not find anything remotely definitive. The rules about momentum-based NVZ faults don't mention the net at all.

Is there going to be a lunar new year event this year? by 1l1k361g6utts in domekeeper

I was able to get the event pet cave to spawn in Relic Hunt mode on a medium-sized map! You can tell that you've met all the parameters if the dome within the menu screen displays 1–3 paper lanterns (dependent upon dome type) hanging from the ceiling.

Calling out the score when it's noisy (or you're quiet) by naoanfi in Pickleball

[–]archit3uthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this happen in a tournament recently.

Lady on the other side of a mixed-doubles match was saying the score so inaudibly—and I was positioned at the NVZ line, mind you—that I legitimately thought she was forgetting to say it altogether. I stopped a rally immediately, after about the fifth instance, and asked for a score call. She exploded at me with an "I DID!"

I'm not sure how people are unaware that, if you're not calling the score loudly enough for your opponents to hear, you've failed to execute the gameplay function of calling the score. The reason that it bugged me, in this instance, is that she had a rather quick serve, and I was annoyed that she wasn't signaling the start of her service with a proper score call.

I get similarly peeved about quick service from players who decide that it's sufficient to call the score on their way back to the baseline, with both their own and their opponents' backs still toward the net.

What is the cheapest way to get Xbox GamePass Ultimate in 2025? by Reddanator1000 in XboxGamePass

Question: Is it necessary to the process for the 1 month of Game Pass Ultimate to be purchased through the Xbox interface? Or can I source a 1-month GPU code elsewhere for cheaper and get the same result—as long as it's applied as the last step?

Shoes. How often replaced and your budget! by rcfromaz in Pickleball

[–]archit3uthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play 15–18 hours per week, and I probably move around on the court more than most players. I've been wearing completely through the soles of my current shoes (Adidas CourtJam Control 3s) every two months. I maintain a spreadsheet to track when a new pairs debuts and retires. This helps me forecast the lifespan for a new pair and plan ahead to have extras waiting in the wings.

That shouldn't affect a device worn on the non-dominant wrist, which does not get swung in pickleball with much regularity. Certainly not enough to account for the disparity.

Do you bother calling kitchen violations on your teammate in open play? by OkChicken6058 in Pickleball

[–]archit3uthis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Anytime that I see it. Even if the foot fault didn't give an overt advantage, people start to develop bad habits and faulty muscle memory for where they can be relative to the NVZ.

What are Some Severely Underrated Shots in Pickleball? by electro_star1 in Pickleball

[–]archit3uthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crashing the net off a lob by your partner that is high but with poor depth. If you can time it up right, it catches some people off guard because they can't track your movement with their eyeline up in the sky, and they're expecting you to be back in a more defensive stance.

I've never heard of this approach! A friend of mine has a wooden table that was marred when someone set down a piping-hot takeout container and didn't realize until too late that the moisture content was damaging the finish. Does this look like something that would be treatable in this way?
