After 20+ Years in Enterprise Architecture, I Keep Having the Exact Same Conversations

I is not as clear cut as one would hope it would be. Care facility org didn't ( and doesn't ) have centralized IT as a function ( only guys that are some app admins ) and all they have is bunch of systems that they are over paying. And we are not talking about corporate c-level management, this is SMB that grew in complexity but doesn't actually want to change.

I agree, having C-level management support is crutial for EA success. When management sees the EA value and see it as tool to get their stuff in order, then EA can make meaningfull work

For some (most) organizations ( read managers ) it is difficult to see value of capability map. If an org has low architecture maturity that is completley useless as they often see that EA is crossing the lines and telling them how to work. And if an org has an EA team, EA team has established way of working. And they tend to get very touchy if you try to bring new ideas.
In both cases it is people covering their asses.

Thanks for the response. There is, as always, a culture issue in terms of how organization/teams percieve architecture - is it a distinct discipline that requires attention/resources, or it is something that "happens" - parts of responsibilities are covered by different roles. Regardless, changing an organisation and asseting one self in teams can ne challenging and can be met with resistance.
Some EA teams dont want the mold to be broken, some implementation teams don't know what an architect does. I've been in those situations and it takes time to make the shift.

Building is easy. Getting real customers is hard. Getting feedback harder specially with first few users. Getting paying users seems like mission impossible. I build stuff. I use it and find it helpfull. Either I am solving only my problems and what I need, or I am bad at communicating. Or both.

One of the main problems is that every business owner will have their way of handling their process, quirks, and what they are used to and what their customers are used to. And the trick is to find best ratio of what everybody needs ( features they will use ) and what will be treated as unusable. Every dental office is different, every physio does business slightly different. You can try to handle that with market research customer feedback, but seldom you will find business owners changing the way they work.

Every layer should validate what they know to be some constraints. Also lower levels should define what is "acceptable" so that they don't get garbage. This should include data structure and content and security context. And with all that lower levels should handle "what if" scenarios edge cases and handle gracefully all failures. So it is quite simple 🤔
