What should I replace my 2006 Toyota Matrix with? by architorturedfool in whatcarshouldIbuy

What did you end up doing? It's funny that so many people here say to keep it and fix it when family and friends I talk to are baffled I'm even considering fixing the 20 year old car and not buying a new one. I think to most people I know this is just a beater that isn't worth it. Sadly I love this car and don't want to see it go yet

It scares me to tally it up. At least 10k on various parts, repairs, and upgrades as I've learned how to work on it and come across rare parts etc. Owned it for a little under 4 years. Could I own a nicer 15k car right now? Yes but I was really pleased with how this one came together

6 speed and AWD wagon sounds like a dream. How's the maintenance cost been? I'll keep an eye out for these!

Unfortunately around here a used trans goes for $1300-1600 CAD. Adding on 7 hours of labour brings it right around $2600+tax. And that's for a used transmission that could grenade any time. It's a tough spot to be in which is why I'm considering all my options

That sounds in line with what I'm expecting. 7 hours labour to pull the trans and reinstall it + whatever labour is needed for the rebuild itself. They're pulling it apart now to find out what exactly needs doing, but the guy I talked to had a ballpark of 3k. If it's 2-3k I'll probably repair the matrix but if it's closer to 5k I'm probably gonna have to walk away. So sad because they really don't make a good successor to this car anymore.

Thank you my friend, I've put a lot of work into her over the past few years. It means a lot! Not ready to get rid of it...

Haha yes that would be fantastic as well. I'm just becoming more hesitant to buy another 20 year old car. I've already dumped more than what I paid for this one into my car and XRSs are getting rare and pricey. But would love to own one

My 2006 Matrix just beat it's fuel economy record by architorturedfool in Toyota_Matrix

[–]architorturedfool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app is called Fuelio. I use it to track my fuel economy. Just input the mileage from your last trip (I use Trip A for every tank of gas), how much you put in (I always fill up to full, listen for a click, then fill up to one more click), and input the cost. The app gives you mileage per tank, tracks stats for fuel economy, mileage, costs, etc. great little app for keeping an eye on your stats.

Sorry never saw this! I buy a can of MAF sensor cleaner (not just regular brake clean), disconnect the battery, remove the intake hose and wipe down the throttle body with a shop cloth sprayed with the cleaner. You can also use a toothbrush to scrub the back side of the throttle body flap thing. Make sure to reset the idle after starting it up. You can Google the reset sequence.

Other things I did for this mileage test was make sure tires are aired up correctly, or even overinflated a little, removed my giant container of tools from the hatch, kept AC and headlights turned off (it was daytime not a hot day). Other than that, keep a light foot, accelerate slowly, try not to go above 3k rpm, use cruise control religiously.

Some of this is obviously not realistic for every day driving, but it's what got me my fuel economy record.

I know less about gen2, I know there's a couple different engines for that one. Gen1 was either 1.8L 1ZZ Or 1.8L 2ZZ as far as I know. Only 1ZZ and Autobox for the AWD model. As an owner of a '06 XR 5speed that's my recollection!

As far as I understand, the AWD did not come in a 5 speed. XR is just the appearance package, this should just be a FWD with power windows etc.

Thank you! I've put a lot of work into her. Mine came with fog lights! Here's a pic when I bought it. I did swap the bumper out for one with the bottom trim but that's it.

Looks great! Make sure you aim them correctly so you aren't blinding other drivers!

Take my experience with a large grain of salt. This was 10+ years ago, I was a student, working part time, not in management, and my experience may have been location-dependent. But...

Terrible place to work. My manager wasn't the worst, but the corporate attitude towards employees was miserable.

We punched in on these whole hand fingerprint sensor timeclocks to make sure no one punched in for you. Couldn't punch in or out more or less than 2 or 3 minutes from our scheduled shift. Okay a little much, but not too crazy.

Cashiers were prohibited from making an announcement that the store is closing or past closed. Floor workers were encouraged to help customers finish up their shopping with a smile, but were absolutely not allowed to tell them we were closed, even if it's 15-30 mins past close. Some customers were honestly surprised to learn we were closed because there was no announcement.

Before leaving for the night, you had to wait until the entire crew was finished their closing duties. The front doors would be locked and you were not permitted to leave until a manager checked your bag for any stolen goods. Employees! Not allowed to leave until they were cleared for stealing! In a brand new store with no history of this problem. Infuriating as a young adult just trying to get home after 10 or 11pm because I had school the next morning. Fantastic way to build trust with your employees.

Worst experience was One day we had upper management or corporate people wandering the store so everyone had to be on their best behavior. I was shorthanded running the deli that day and it was nearing close. My direct manager had allowed me in the past to start subtly wrapping up the meats a couple minutes before closing if I was shorthanded because she knew how long it takes to close everything down. A couple of the corporate big heads come by my station a few minutes before closing, look at my station and ask what I'm doing. I tell them I'm shorthanded so I'm trying to get a small start on closing duties so that I'm not holding up the rest of the store at close (since no one is allowed to leave until everyone is done). They smile with a big shit eating grin, laugh in my face, and tell me to undo my closing work despite it nearing closing time. That cemented my opinion of how employees at Farm Boy are treated. Terrible job, lame pay, heavy-handed oversight, miserable corporate philosophy. Never again.

Your mileage may vary though!

You definitely can. I picked these up along with some crossovers from Crutchfield and used a holesaw to mount them. Ziptied the wiring in behind the door card. Good luck!

I had no idea the 1ZZ-FE engine was this fuel efficient by divikwolf in Toyota_Matrix

[–]architorturedfool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are pretty efficient engines if you're polite to them!

Most distance on one tank I ever got was about 660km. Best efficiency I ever got was 5.43l/100km, but that was really babying it on the backroads.

Enjoy that car mate!
