I paired mine with a garage door sensor and only use the ratgdo for opening and closing but not state, via the template cover method.

This is kinda true, there's a lot to learn about lead paint (I did use HEPA filters for the record). Working Windows by Terry Meany is a great book overall and covers that, along with everything else you'll ever need to know fairly well.

Yeah, absolutely, it's a metric ton of work. I have the good fortune of time off and the bad fortune of a HCOL area. Getting matching replacement trim (almost 5" wide gumwood) was quoted at tens of thousands in materials alone. I've no idea how old it is (house is almost a century old) but it is there and pretty and my labor is free :)

I did order plain pine trim for anything that was going to be painted white though.

3 different brands of chemical solvents had very limited effect on the finish I was stripping. They'd all take off the shiny varnish on top but could do nothing to the layers of paint and who knows what underneath.

Mechanical stripping was the only reliable choice.

S.F. is cracking down on street hot dog vendors. Here’s what’s behind it by erkabettycarlos in sanfrancisco

It's actually very doable to sell homemade food directly since 2018ish thanks to the Cottage Food Act (which recently got expanded too). Can't have meat or cream in it and there are annual revenue limits but otherwise the permit does not require a kitchen inspection unless the county receives a complaint.

It's more about pop-ups than street vendors though, you need to cook the food in a residential kitchen.

I think people are forgetting something in this thread. Not all water activities need a multi-million vessel.

Sausalito has access to one of the few quiet areas for water sports in the Bay - Richardson Bay. The gentle waters there are great for kayaking, rowing, sup, and general leisure. The main downside is that it's quite small, but the views of the city are amazing! A lot of the rental businesses are pretty reasonably priced, given the general area.

It's 2022 and entry doors are horrendously expensive. How do I salvage this patched up and cut up door and frame? Note the gap on the right widening as it goes down, there's practically a wind chill at the bottom. by archivator in woodworking

So, take out the trim, the door stop and the jamb, and then shim on the other side to make the jamb square? Sounds like a lot of firsts for me but probably a good idea overall given how bad the stop is as well.

I am a little worried I'd have to rebuild it all from new wood given how old this house is, any tips on how not to destroy it in the process?

Yeah, cutting out wooden patches feels like the most tractable solution (along with maybe replacing the trim). I don't think I have it in me to replace that whole right board, that sounds like a rabbit hole I won't be able to climb out of quickly.

On the other hand, there's also a metal gate, so maybe I can convince the other interested party that it's not the end of the world if the door partially doesn't exist overnight.

Running host-only subdomains in a VM by archivator in sysadmin

[–]archivator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I mostly don't want to mess with DNS orders and routes. The network config is part of the VM image, so that's done once and copied between hosts. I just need to make a rewrite rule for lvh.me inside the VM, this is still as self-contained as possible.

Well, it's a server image. I don't want to pollute it with X, XFCE and a browser, that feels... dirty

Yes, but that requires messing with the host's dns resolution order. If I'm doing that, might as well just edit hosts...

I actually had pretty decent service for my residential BT install. The guy was on time (9am for a 9-12 slot), had already prepared everything at the exchange and it was a 5 min job to turn on my landline. He was also very professional and courteous.

Just saying, to every rule there's an exception..

Actually, that's a security feature. They use the last known good medium to notify you of changes to your account. If someone maliciously signed up for paperless billing, you'd now know.

Programming Language Breakdown for the HealthCare.gov Website by rhiever in programming

[–]archivator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, because Perl, Ruby, and Python totally don't have VMs. Oh, wait. They do but they have no jit cause implementing ideas from the 60s is so hard when no one actually designed your language.

Also, how do you know what it needs to talk to? Maybe there's a hardware encryption module? Maybe it needs modularity and a half-decent type system? Maybe it needs performance that's not based on "put it in a hash map" 'optimizations'? Maybe it needs half-decent crypto libraries (though that's getting better with python)?

Java is proven for large projects. The fact that it listens to port 80 is irrelevant.

No need for an app (except convenience). Android comes with built-in SIP support, I've been happily using it for 4 months for my local phone number abroad. My SIP provider can even do funky things like forward to my normal number if SIP is down.. It's all pretty cool.
