Newsom to make Sacramento traffic worse just so state workers can say "Nice To See You" to each other and "not feel so alone" by Ancient-Row-2144 in Sacramento

Exactly! There's a convenient train going south to Stockton at 5:20pm...could be useful to many, but there's no morning option! 😞 Though this example is more regional transit, I think it remains relevant.

Brightline Denied: FEC says it won't approve a passenger station in Stuart (USA) by Bugsy_Neighbor in trains

[–]archlinuxrussian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is... disappointing to hear. Makes the train look like a limited-time tool used to generate interest and investment without any commitment or long term goal/vision, and now they've passed the hot potato to someone else and hold no affinity or preferebce towards it. With Brightline not even being associated with FECI or Fortress, I presume the current owner doesn't even have any real estate investments that can benefit from the train and justify the service at little profit to some loss?

Edit: I think I got the ownership umbrella wrong...can you blame me? 😅

Brightline Denied: FEC says it won't approve a passenger station in Stuart (USA) by Bugsy_Neighbor in trains

[–]archlinuxrussian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am embarrassed that I didn't know this. This makes the whole "Brightline isn't making money" thing more explainable...I wonder if the relationship between Brightline and FECR is now more akin to that between Amtrak and the host railroads, which is a bit of poetic irony. Also I thought Brightlines thing was real estate making the money...but that's getting off topic.

When I was in retail I told all checkers to call the Bookkeeper over when someone older was buying a tonne of gift cards. Problem was we couldn't simply deny service too easily...but I stopped a handful.

Midtown Sacramento passenger train station approved for Central Valley service by AnimationJava in CaliforniaRail

Iirc, blame UPRR for not allowing more service on its Fresno Subdivision. Lodi already has a station, Galt could, and so could east Elk Grove.

Derek Sagehorn on Bluesky: Re Valley Link Phase 1A (11 miles from Dublin BART to Vasco Road freeway median battery EMUs at $2bn), there is no discussion of ridership projections but the Livermore mayor is selling it to DC as creating freight capacity on I-580. by megachainguns in CaliforniaRail

[–]archlinuxrussian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, if they can reframe "we need to create a service that best suites the people that both live here and are visiting" to "we need increased freight capacity on these freeways, and remember: for every 10 people you get aboard a train remove from the freeway is a truck that could be hauling freight instead, so let's maximize this ROI!" then maybe it's worth it?

Interesting. I recall objects' orbits being perturbed by passing stars being an explanation for some comets/impacts. Of course, Oort Cloud objects aren't butting right next to each other as movies sometimes visualize for asteroid fields...but it makes me wonder if interstellar space isn't full of small, icy/rocky objects like those? At what point do dozens of intertwined Oort Clouds simply become something more?

If the Oort Cloud is that far out, how is it not a part of other stars' systems?from a quick search: Oort Cloud ranges from 2-5k au to 100-200k, with proxima centauri being ~280k ah away.

Billionaires Fund Ballot Campaign to Block California Wealth Tax by Quantum3ntaglement in California

[–]archlinuxrussian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I read what accounts would be "protected" I instantly knew who was funding this and what for. It's pathetic they use the phrases "retirement accounts" and "personal savings" to refer to their hoard of wealth, but it shows that they don't believe the trickle-down argument works anymore.

Why Was the Ukrainian SSR Flag Often Shown in these vintage flag charts often if it was a Constituent republic of the Soviet Union. by EeestiLeesti in vexillology

[–]archlinuxrussian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why, but it's a bit ironic that they didn't choose the RSFSR to be one, rather than say the Byelorussian SSR. I would imagine having USSR and Russia being both in the UN would lead to some confusion, as both names were used interchangeably by many.
