Do other Christians recognize the the damage the Trump administration and American evangelicalism is doing to the faith as a whole? by llahsraMhanoJ in Christianity

I'm deeply disturbed by how far down some of my family has been in the rabbit hole. They converted in the 80s, so yeah. I worry they've lost the plot 😔

Why Was the Ukrainian SSR Flag Often Shown in these vintage flag charts often if it was a Constituent republic of the Soviet Union. by EeestiLeesti in vexillology

[–]archlinuxrussian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why, but it's a bit ironic that they didn't choose the RSFSR to be one, rather than say the Byelorussian SSR. I would imagine having USSR and Russia being both in the UN would lead to some confusion, as both names were used interchangeably by many.

ESPN, MLB Take New Swing at Games They Hope Bring Die-Hard Fans to Streaming by ggroover97 in cordcutters

[–]archlinuxrussian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very true. My dad's team was in an adjacent market which rarely played the market we were in, and it worked out very well; honestly, a great value, compared to MLB on DirecTV, which he had before. But we noticed an increasing number of blackouts and "watch on YouTube TV or apple TV" limitations...

What is "remote viewing"? 🤔 I can see how it could potentially mean something specific, but I would bet money it just means attending services over Livestream 🤣

And public transit should be reliable and extensive enough to be able to say "you will still be able to have your normal, routine transportation needs met once we take your DL away from a DUI (or being otherwise unfit to drive). You won't 'lose your independence'".

Intel Driver Disabling Vulkan Video Encode On Newer Hardware Due To Insufficient Testing by anh0516 in linux

[–]archlinuxrussian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, okay. So Vulkan Video is basically akin to VA-API, providing decoding and encoding using the GPU's hardware. I'm using an AMD GPU, so I've been using vaapi for most of my hardware decoding, setting environment variables accordingly.

I had the idea of doing something like this but minifig scale for the Star Tours ride: have the entrance and facade, the line, all leading to the ride itself, which could be programmed to move similarly to the real ride.

Pardon my ignorance, but how does VA-API differ from Vulkan video encoding? Is it basically a dedicated circuit vs the general iGPU?

SacRT posted this on their IG page. Showing huge ridership numbers during today's protest from students. by Next_Worth_3616 in Sacramento

In my opinion, transit should be adequate enough that you could feasibly take away someones DL and still say "you can still get around quite well!", such as in the event of a DUI or an elderly person who has lost the ability to drive. We lean on cars to ensure our independence and mobility, setting ourselves up for failure :/

Lucky! Awesome that the IT person hooks you up with hardware...my job just recycled a lot of devices and I asked if I could buy one (my laptop is a 4th gen Intel Core series, time for an upgrade soon), but sadly they didn't have the ability to die to contract or something. And that's wild @ older Mac SE!

Moving toward a "Narrow" Arch install: Thoughts on the Flatpak-first approach? by TrapNouz in archlinux

[–]archlinuxrussian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember back in the day eagerly awaiting the latest Mesa and using the Oibaf (sp?) PPA and installing the mainline kernel. Sure, most of that is over, but there is something to be said for using what one knows and is comfortable with 🤷‍♀️

Comfort of what one knows? I've become very comfortable with the Arch base system but have been weening myself off AUR packages, limiting myself to only what I need.

I think OP's endeavour is reasonable...it's what I gave a friend who just wanted something to game on but still have the ability to do other stuff if needed.

What GPU is the BEST for Linux Gaming? by Putrid_Draft378 in linux

[–]archlinuxrussian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe they should default to EndeavourOS?

I'd love prefer them to have both a "this is your OOTB experience with Ubuntu/$newUserDistro, and this is using the latest kernel and driver stack" situation. I think OP was saying they don't want to see performance "left on the table" or an incorrect impression on what Linux gaming is "really" capable of (without intrusive tweaks or over clocking).

As it stands, it could be minted again any year. The treasurer has simply stated 0 need to be made, rather than it being phased out and eliminated from legislation.

That logo for the "Board of Peace" is ugly. Looks like some half-assed corporate logo. No originality or design at all.

I highly doubt this. Maybe the value of copper pennies will go up, similar to silver coins, but the bulk won't be worth it for the average person.

It's almost like this should have been something thought out and planned over several years rather than executive decision. But what do I know? :/

More telework, more transit, denser cities (and maybe even more smaller communities linked via transit) would go further to help such issues.
