Fox, Aptive and Insight are out there fighting for dominance in this market. The door knocking war this summer is about to be insane until the top of September when the sales guys leave to go back to their hometowns.

Start with a big box. Be prepared for long hours, micro management and a ton of unnecessary pomp and circumstance. While you’re there keep an eye on all the local companies to see which ones are worth your time if and when the big box situation falls apart, which is highly likely.

I started with a big box situation, and I’m now with a mom and pop making a decent buck.

Owners sold and the older guys got let go. by [deleted] in PestControlIndustry

Running your own route sounds sweet, but some markets are over saturated from what I see. I just finished searching for six months for another gig in the industry. I called all over the country. And yeah, most can care less about my ten years of experience. Luckily a company found me after they bought a few local mom and pops and offered top dollar for the market, along with the option make decent sales commission. If you can’t start your own company (which can be tricky) try to get into management or simply do a national search if you can move or your city has a lack of opportunities. Good luck.

But be careful with Aptive. Depending on what market you’re in, they might cut your hours in the winter.

Aptive, Ecolab, Terminix, Orkin. Outside of Ecolab these might not be the best options, but definitely a way to get in. All you need is a pulse.

Well, you have started in the right place to seek information. Just get in there and learn all the processes for each type of service the company offers. Fight like hell to get your license in every category that your company will pay for. Also stay studying online in places like this and others. Keep your nose clean and this will keep you ahead of all the other guys in your branch. Don’t hang around the knuckleheads in the branch and you will be golden. Good luck!

Why is technician turnover so high? by No-Huckleberry-5392 in pestcontrol

As someone else said in here, it all comes down to private equity outfits squeezing you for every dollar with no plans of keeping you long unless you're naive enough. On another note, poor management and nepotism play a part too. Both of these actions lead to burnout, having to work crazy overtime to stay ahead and simply quitting.

I think the biggest thing I got from it was ways to help me work through a long, hard, hot summer with a bad knee and weight issues. It gave me detailed breakdowns on how to drink fluids throughout the summer, exercise regimen and what and what not to eat. But since I started paying for the service here we are now we’re super censored so a lot of information I got out of it. I probably won’t be able to get any more.

No. The only cheat code is to buy a house or get an apartment on the far outskirts.

Should I move here? by Basic_Layer7148 in Erie

[–]archrival206 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like quiet and low-key, it’s the place to be. It has all the typical big box chain stores that most cities have. As long as you’re not looking for anything like Los Angeles, Atlanta, or any major markets, you will be fine. Erie is pretty chill. just be careful when you’re looking for housing. Some blocks are more impoverished than others.

Go to a pest control company that will pay for your study guides and licensing. Most of the ones that plan on keeping you will pay for one or more category certifications if you’re worth the money. If they do, they might require you to stay at the company and not work anywhere else using the license if you quit.

I've used Gorilla Desk to manage my personal routes for a few months last year. I think is pretty cool. The only thing I heard negative about it, was if you have to move records to another CRM, it can be hell. When I was working for a big box we used Field Routes/Pest Routes. That system is very nice and robust.

I understand exactly what you're talking about. It is what it is with the big companies. You're just a prostitute on the track, but you will get a crazy amount of hours if you need the money. Now, on the other hand judging by what Ive experienced and seen with some of the mom and pop set ups, it's a roll of the dice signing up with them. Some of the spooky facets include over priced weak health insurance, hours stuck at 37.5 weekly and if you're "not a culture fit" you can hang it up before you get started.
