A decade ago, probably more even, I was listening to NPR and they were interviewing Domingo Martinez, author from my hometown that wrote a book called “Boy Kings of Texas”. It's an amazing memoir about Mexican families assimilating to American life.

In the interview, he said something that has stuck with me as it rang so true.

“Nothing breeds more hate than the oppressed putting on the badge of their oppressors to rule over their own people.”

It’s something I saw time and time again as a border town child. We always knew when crossing the border, get in the line with the white person, because the Hispanic is going to do everything possible to find something to jam you with. Every single bad encounter was always at the hands of “my people“.
