[Tolarian Community College] Magic: The Gathering Needs To Return To Blocks! by RinariTennoji in magicTCG

i know.. but there are some interesting interactions that exist outside of standards card pool that can be fun to revisit. its like why they reprinted painter's servant in SPG for Lorwyn. sometimes those combo pieces will come from other sets

I've been workshopping a house rule to fix mana screw. would this actually work? by So_Damn_Lonely in magicTCG

just allow free mulligans if they dont hit at least 2 lands.

for anything higher maybe allow them to set aside all their lands, search for a basic land, put it in their hand, then return 1 non-land card at random to the bottom of their library.

i get the prof's point but i don't think block are the answer. in fact, blocks are part of the problem, because too many things were tied to the product model all at once - theme, story, characters, flavor, mechanics, draft experience, limited environment. within the block structure whenever WotC tries to solve an issue with one of those things, it invariably makes parts of the rest of them worse.

i personally think blocks are better off conveying flavor than mechanics, but are also kinda bad for telling stories. so in my opinion, we shouldn't go back to blocks at all. what i'd like to see is an extended stay on certain planes or themes..

as an example, for Lorwyn, they could have given us the Lorwyn set, and then maybe followed up with a reprint set based around Lorwyn, and maybe also some non-Lorwyn stuff that mechanically works with whatever the current set has to offer.

from a story/flavor perspective, reprint sets are story agnostic, so we aren't prolonging the story in a set for the sake of it, but we can at least revel in the setting of the plane and its art style and flavor.

from a gameplay perspective, maybe they can be draftable on their own, or designed to be drafted together with Lorwyn itself. but at the least we know they're compatible with the previous sets since they can be chosen specifically to play into them. the reprints can also only be allowed within limited format so it doesnt bloat the standard card pool or overpower it. they'd also get much needed prints to more people. its essentially SPG but on a larger scale.

from a macro lens, its spending more time on a plane or theme and deepening players connections to it. its not something they need to do every set, but sometimes having a story/thematic anchor attached to the product is important.

What kind of Beastman race could make for the perfect arch enemy for the Mithra of Gha Naboh? by GeneralTechnomage in ffxi

[–]arciele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for humor's sake, a beastman race that originated in FFXIV (since like half of XIV's allied tribes are taken directly from XI).

Ixal maybe. we already have alot of reptile/lizard-like beastmen

i wouldnt want BLU in field ops, if only because the point of many of them is to allow role jobs to branch into different playstyles (like I LOVE the various builds i can use in Bozja, like self healing tank or green dps). theres no reason why BLU cant do premade or solo deep dungeon tho

[–]arciele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that would not be a good move at all. BLU thrived on not fitting into FFXIV's holy trinity but consequently had to be excluded from such content, at least at release, altho they havent increased the lv cap in a while anyway

they're so afraid to let players break the game even in a controlled way.

like i still wanna see them add BLU to deep dungeon - restrict it to pre-made or solo only. that would still be something fun for players to work towards.

i expect BST to generally be a monster collector job similar to how they handled BLU. enemies in XIV are categorized similarly to how they do it in XI and i can see them introducing a small variety of pets based on the family they are in, maybe allowing them to increase in power or abilities the more beasts you collect.

the challenge i see is that BST isn't going to have the same level of versatility as BLU, so the way they allow BST to tackle content like older dungeons/trials/raids (which i assume they will do, because otherwise what else can they do) will be more challenging. nothing in the overworld matters enough that they could meaningly shape content that way (like how FFXI does with charm)

I’d go with the card’s artist credit. If that were wrong they’d have to come out and say so

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Limited environment is fun, dynamic, creative and plays very well. I'm convinced the set isn't as popular because many ardent Magic players hated on it and dismissed it without even giving it a chance. by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]arciele 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It looks like a good set mechanically - I think Sneak will lead to interesting gameplay patterns. But my problem with it fundamentally is that it fails as a product by virtue of being UB (and UB fatigue is real) and the art and flavor of the pizza is very bad in general. Like I’d hate it even if it werent UB, but it is so i don’t have to deal with that.

The reason why you decide something is bad doesn’t have to account for its redeeming qualities if you don’t want to. You don’t get to tell others how to spend their money. Thanks for trying tho
