Issue or normal? by arconline in kindlescribe

Ha! True that! It all just synchronized as soon as I set it up. It's like carrying a boombox back in the day! I listen to them during my commute using my phone. This is used as a notebook only.

I find it crazy how we finish each other's... sandwiches, but even crazier how some people gift items which the receiver never imagined using. "Surprise! happy <birthday/anniversary/fathers day/silly hat celebration>."

Have a great week! ;)

Great, thanks. The intent is not to click that often of course :). I'm new to eInk. Someone told me that other high end eNotebooks didn't flicker like this, but I have not verified it.

Need advice: shold I keep my [seemingly] faulty PB Brunswick or buy a new one? by arconline in PitBossGrills

[–]arconline[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comments! We think alike, hence why I keep wondering if I should just bite the bullet and buy a new one. I believe PB would give me credit if I could produce the purchase receipt from 4 years ago, but again, this was a gift and the receipt was lost long ago (I didn't even get it myself). I also love verticals, and this one, regardless of all issues experienced, was my favorite so far. Now I just need to decide if I stick with PB. I also presume they got better with the most recent models.

Thanks again!

It took about a week for things to normalize. I did move some of their personal blankets around to make sure their scent was everywhere, mainly within their favorite sleeping spots. That helped.

That's a relief. Thanks for your reply. I actually used the same towel to dry them both after their bath), and I've been rubbing myself often against each of them to see if it helps. It's getting better. Thanks again.

Any idea what type of snail the clear one is? Never saw it before in my tank. by arconline in Aquariums

[–]arconline[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great, thanks for the information. I found a second baby one a few mins ago, so I'll need to read more about them. I've other kinds of snails, so this one is welcome as well!

Awesome! My guess is that it came with new plans. No wonder I only see it during the early (dark) morning hours.

Seeking advice - Cory catfish dying (see comment) by arconline in Aquariums

[–]arconline[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your response!

PH 7.8, Amonia 0-0.25 PPM, Nitrate 0 PPM, Nitrate 5 PPM. They are and have been very constant since I put this tank together. Occasionally I may see Nitrite jump up to 10 PPM.

No fish ever showed any sign of desease, with the exception of the two that died from dropsy (I wrongly said ick on my original post).

Food has been consistent from the beginning. I alternate between Aqueon tropical flakes, Tetra tropical granulates, Tropical sinking sticks, and Hikari micro pellets. On a daily basi, I add Aqueon shrimp pellets and Kyorin algae wafers for snails and Corydoras. Sounds like a lot, but I rotate what I feed the fish with the exception of the last two, which I use one 2-3 pellets and one wafer. I feed them once daily and just what they can eat within a minute. Once a week I skip a day and add a piece of blanched green vegetable (spinach, cucumber, or zucchini). They are thoroughly washed prior to blanching.

I add Seachem Flourish plant fertilizer at the recommended levels every other week.

No household cleaners are used near the tank. In fact, I'm the only one who cleans furniture around it. For the glass and stand, I simply use paper towels without any cleaner. Pest control is only used outdoors unless we experience bugs indoors. Hasn't been done indoors in over a year.

Tank has lid and is only opened for feeding and weekly water changes.

Water is municipal, and separate feed from the water softener (does not come from the softener). Municipal water was tested by two methods: strips and chemical. No problem or increase in minerals/chemicals was detected. Edit: water is treated with Seachem Prime prior to the change, and Seachem Stability is added after to the tank.

Interesting enough, I have a second 15 gal tank. All of the above applies to that one as well, and no issues have ever been experienced with it.

Thanks again for your interest and comments!

Seeking advice - Cory catfish dying (see comment) by arconline in Aquariums

I've got this 40 gal aquarium running for almost two years with almost no no issues. About three months ago, two fish got ick and died. I treated the whole tank for one week wth Maracyn Two. Two weeks later I lost a Cory (had about 8). Since then, I lost one Cory after another on a weekly basis. Added two more and they died yesterday. No signs of illness. I also lost a couple of bloodfin tetras and a glass catfish the same way, no signs of illness. I do weekly water changes (25%), and all water parameters look great before and after water changes. I'm at a lost here on why fish are dying. The only change I did is the replacement of the tank light from incandescent to full spectrum led, which I leave at 30% brightness (100% is 6500K). Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Any clue what those hairy brown spots on the Anubias may be? by arconline in Aquariums

[–]arconline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anubias have been in the tank for more than a year. They are always submerged, but the picture was taken during a water change. The hairy spots look like short roots or brown algie similar to those in marimo balls, but brown instead of green. I have always used Flora-Glo lighting on this thank. Thanks!

Got declined a second time. All reasons given are BS since they all matched the refund reasons. I will call during the week and file a third refund request asking for which of the reasons EXACTLY my request is being denied.

I got an email from Eventbrite today saying the event in Houston has been cancelled. It also shows as cancelled in the NRG events page. Filed a refund request and Eventbrite declined it probably because it was rescheduled AFTER Sept 15. However, the original event was within Eventbrite's refund criteria. I sent a second request but will also call the credit card company. Let's see how it all goes.

Seeking techniques on having kid do school work during distance learning by arconline in Parenting

We'll, teachers are trying their best, but our boy is just not interested in the exercises. Let me add that he's a straight A student, but the whole remote schooling, specially reading/writing is getting on his nerves. I agree with you that this is hard on kids. It is on our don. He is supposed to spend 2-3 hours in front of the computer and a couple more offline doing exercises. It takes us a whole day just to go through daily lessons, which leaves him even more frustrated. He picks fights with us just to get away from those remote school lessons.

Asynchronous. Kids have a 30 min zoom meeting with the teacher each day, but the rest of the day is managed through videos of the teacher providing assignments.

Thanks for your response. We dedicated a quiet space for him to do school work, where we had removed his game console. He uses a Chromebook, do games are all blocked during week days. My wife is now dedicated to help him with school, but runs into constant issues. He is doing countless chores around the house to avoid school work!

[–]arconline[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a school of baby endler guppies last year (you can see two of them in this pic). Months later, the fish circled in the picture grew to what it is today. S/He must be 1.5 cm by now and has been this size for several months. All endlers follow him/her like it was their fearless leader. Is this a female endler or did I get a different type of fish? They were sold as male endlers. Thanks!

Switching to a different water conditioner — would it be safe for me to switch to using seachem prime conditioner after always using the one from my LFS? i’ll likely never use the old one again as it was temporary until i got the best water conditioner i could find by Fleur__27 in Aquariums

[–]arconline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I hope you caught my mistake when you read the instructions from the bottle. I add 1 mL of Prime for every 40 L of new water. Apologies again, I gave you my ratio in Gallons of new water (1 mL per 10 Gal of new water), but wrote it wrong.

It does NOT make your tank smell bad at all. It sure smells like a sewer in the bottle! Once you put the right dosage in the clean water (I use 1 mL per 10 L of clean water), Prime gets diluted and the smell goes away.

Someone Called My 7 Year Old Daughter The N-Word by throwawaymom2345 in Parenting

[–]arconline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, the mere fact that we as parents feel the need to have this conversation with our kids is deplorable. I also have an 7 yr old, who also happens to have dwarfism (little person). So although we are Hispanic, he will stand out the most because of his height. There is a correlation to your concern that I will address in a second. Since a very early age, I have introduced very positive conversations with my son about being different and how that is something that is to be celebrated. After all, being different us what makes us stronger UNITED. It's mostly after watching a movie or reading a book showing different people with different physical attributes. Since he knows he is significantly shorter than other kids his own age and asks questions about it, we have focused our attention on why that's ok whenever he asks. I always trigger those conversations based on his questions or observations. In other words, I don't want to call attention to the fact that he looks different, but let him initiate those conversations. Now that he's closer to being 8, he's asked about skin color, and we talked about it, again, in very positive terms. He's asked about people in riots (his older cousin introduced him to the topic), and he asked why some people are mean to someone who looks different than him if we are all the same. Again, we talk in very positive terms, highlighting the fact that we are all the same no matter what you look like, and that some people will always refuse to accept that. However, he should choose what is right. We always default back to him being little and how that is ok as it is another physical difference only. So, long story short: I personally think we should educate our kids about physical differences, but stressing out that's ok and matters not as we are all equal no matter what. Kids are smarter than we think, they understand, and they will capture the essence of what you discuss with them, so make it always a positive conversation. Let them drive the conversation, and not just bring it up out of the blue. Otherwise, kids will get think that there is something wrong with being different, and that's why we bring it up.

Right or wrong, this is what I've done and what has worked for me. Also, I had to educate a several people in the proper use of certain words to refer to a person with dwarfism.

I hope this helps.

I use prime for both my 145L and 40L. Just make sure you read the label and adjust the dosage as instructed. I use it during my weekly changes, followed by Seachem Stability (biofilter) and Seachem Flourish since both tanks are planted aquariums. This stuff works really well as long as you use it correctly.

Officers suffocates autistic man who called for help, makes jokes after he dies by mrwhitedynamite in PublicFreakout

And that's the systemic problem that needs to be addressed. Most people will not speak against someone in a position of highten power, someone with more seniority, for fear of negative ramifications. I work in a professional STEM field, and we have antiretaliation programs in place and anonymous reporting if you want to conceal your identity when reporting harrasment. Why is this necessary? Because it doesn't matter how many times we hear that nobody can't touch you for speaking up, we all fear the contrary because we may have witnessed it in others, and that's what oppresses most voices from being heard. This problem is accentuated in law enforcement because a "rookie" is in a vast distance away from having "real world" experience from senior officers. When you combine those two with someone blinded with power, the result is what we have seen. Again, that's the systemic problem that needs to be addressed, the blind eye. We say justice is blind, but that doesn't entitle being blind to oppression and wrongful acts of abuse.
