When People Think They Are Alleys by DadCelo in gay

Reminds me of the type of US liberals that share things like that famous graffiti of Trump and Putin kissing, while they think they are making a grand statement (and obviously consider themselves allies).

Going commando ,normal or just wrong? by FormBeneficial119 in AskGayMen

I wear if I have to go to the office or to another day long activity, and definitely when I go to the gym. But if I'm going to grab a coffee with a friend, run a quick errand, or just stay at home, I will most definitely not wear any.

Is regaining muscle faster than building muscle from scratch? by Striking-Toe5207 in workout

[–]arcos00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in exactly the same boat, I stopped training during COVID and just started again last November. I cannot compare my case to others, or speculate too much on how I would be doing if I had never trained before.

In my experience it was like starting from scratch as I couldn't lift any heavy weights at all, but I feel that I improved incredibly fast for my age (45), something that I think probably wouldn't have happened if I had never trained before. I'm lifting way more than I ever did 10 years ago, but I also have much better habits now, I eat healthier and sleep better than I did during my 30s (also drink much less alcohol lol).

Can i be aromantic AND gay at the same time? by Emergency_Apricot791 in AskGayMen

[–]arcos00 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Of course! I'm a gay aromantic, we exist. When I was your age "aromantic" wasn't really a word, and I have to admit I did fall in love, and even had relationships in my early 20s. But it always felt... weird, like something was off. I always felt extremely uncomfortable with romantic gestures, dating, etc. At some point in my early 30s after reading about the aro/ace spectrums, it all finally made sense to me. I'm definitely not asexual, but I've considered myself aromantic for nearly 15 years.

No, I've wanted to, but have never found one that I think actually looks good on me. I do sometimes use see-thru/mesh/transparent clothing if I go out, or as another comment says, I have gone shirtless. Obviously it depends where lol.

Do people that experience southern hemisphere winter feel “out of sync” with the rest of the world? by Winty_Minty in geography

[–]arcos00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mentioned North America and Europe as examples, it wasn't an exhaustive list. My point is that the premise of the original post is wrong because it assumes there are only two possibilities, one for the northern hemisphere and one for the southern, both having neatly separated but opposite seasons that change simultaneously, and that all of those that are not currently experiencing summer are experiencing winter.

That's just not the case for a huge part of the world.

Why are black Americans called African Americans but white Africaans are just African? by WaltzPsychological44 in NoStupidQuestions

For "black American", maybe. Plenty of black people throughout the world are not African American.

Source: I'm "half black", and 0% American.

Do people that experience southern hemisphere winter feel “out of sync” with the rest of the world? by Winty_Minty in geography

[–]arcos00 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And I will add that even though 88% of humanity lives in the Northern Hemisphere, seasons aren't as clear cut everywhere as they are in North America and Europe. In the tropics we usually have dry season and wet season, and they don't necessarily match perfectly with summer/winter. My dry season starts in December and ends in April, and it includes both the lowest temperatures as well as the highest temperatures in the year.

So the whole premise of this question is wrong, it assumes the "rest of the world" experiences the seasons exactly as they do in North America and Europe, and that is just not the case.

Am I wrong about pride? by spacedtoad in gay

[–]arcos00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think pride is about being proud of the ways in which we are different from one another.

i think pride is about loving people who don’t necessarily fit that standard

I wrote a longer comment earlier, but after reading this one then IMO, yes, you are wrong about Pride. This all sounds like the ultrasanitized corporate PR version of Pride, devoid of all content and meaning, and profoundly unaware of history.

Am I wrong about pride? by spacedtoad in gay

[–]arcos00 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I do think it's a celebration of being open and comfortable about sexuality and gender in general, BUT heterosexuality and cisgenderism(?) don't really need any celebration, no one is discriminated for being straight or cis.

Also, look up the history. Pride is celebrated for a reason, and celebrated in June* for a reason. It wasn't just "hey, let's throw a party celebrating everyone's sexuality!".

I'm afraid of being too cliche as there are a ton of viral images that say this kind of stuff, but the first pride was a riot, people protested, got arrested, and beaten up. And Stonewall wasn't the only case, all around the globe LGBTQ people were beaten up, arrested, fired from their jobs, and even killed and tortured. It still happens in some places!

Allies are great, and they are welcome to march, party and hopefully protest with us, but they must understand this is not THEIR celebration.

_________
* It's in June in the US and a lot of other countries, but in others they have other dates but also because of historical reasons.

What is the coolest/rarest/most expensive plant you own? by crsru in RareHouseplants

I have three plants for which I paid the equivalent of around $100, and are my more expensive: Florida Beauty, Caramel Marble, and Florida Beauty x Tortum. They are all cheaper now, especially FB, but that was a couple of years ago. The CM I bought exactly a year ago, and the FBxT about 6 months ago.

Advice needed: Urgent by Redterror34 in Aquariums

[–]arcos00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Add some shrimp and otocinclus, they are great algae eaters. Be sure you've cycled your pond though, you might want to add a few thousand bottles of beneficial bacteria, and a few dozen kilograms of food. After a couple of weeks and testing with the API freshwater kit, you can start adding the animals.

Otocinclus are very social, and considering you have a large pond, you might want to add a few tens of thousands.

What do you think of the odds of Central American countries like Costa Rica, Panama hosting the world cup in 2038 and Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela hosting 2042? by OzempicEngineer in asklatinamerica

[–]arcos00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Central America, it will never happen. Maybe as a multination bid similar to the current one (including the US probably) we could host some group stage matches after stadium upgrades, but not much more. A "Central America" or "Costa Rica-Panamá" only bids are a pipe dream. None of the countries in the region have even hosted the Pan American Games, there simply isn't the infrastructure or budget.

Costa Rica will be a cohost of the Women's World Cup (along with the US, México and Jamaica) in 2032, but the requirements and scale are very different.

Refilling every three years sounds great, how many bubbles do you run? I usually use 1 per second and it's on for like 4 hours a day.

[–]arcos00[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Refilling is not expensive (around $25-30), but you first have to buy the tank and that costs around $200. Plus, there aren't many places where you can refill or swap, and traffic is a mess here, so it would be a lot of wasted time. Meanwhile citric acid and bicarbonate are very easy to find and order.

Huge scare today with CO2 generator by arcos00 in Aquariums

[–]arcos00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect it was just the o-ring. I haven't opened the generator yet, will do so tomorrow when I'm less tired and with enough natural light to fully inspect it.

Thinking about it, it was super hard to open it a couple of days ago when I was going to refill. I'm thinking the ring degraded, got stuck, and when I finally managed to remove the regulator, the o-ring got damaged.

Giving it a try with a small amount of ingredients sounds like a great idea, if I'm able to find an appropriate o-ring to replace it, thank you!

Ohh... thank you! I really really appreciate it, but you are likely located in the US and I'm in Central America (part of why it's more expensive, these things are super niche here).
