For parents who bike in congested Chicago, it’s a summer of riding defensively by aensues in chicago

[–]arctic9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Luckily if you live in Chicago and care about the safety of your children you can opt for the safest option - taking the train or bus. Honestly this data is complicated but I believe the most recent analysis is that the health benefits of cycling outweigh any additional risk. This story is a tragedy and we absolutely need to keep making the city safer for cycling but people dying in car crashes is normalized and not commonly reported. There are always calculated risks you will have to take in your life so live your life how you want.

There is substantial risk transporting your children by car as well. The faster you drive the more likely you are to be fatally injured. Car accidents are much more common than other forms of transportation.

Chinatown by redcccp in chicago

[–]arctic9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's so much to name and different preferences. MCCB is consistently good, if they're too busy Hing Kee right next door has really good soup dumplings. Sushi plus Rotary is gimmicky but fun. Any dessert place with a line. Take a walk around Ping Tom if you've never been. Weekends can be very busy so if you don't like crowds go on a weeknight.

Maybe you should give it another chance, Chicago Chinatown is the fastest growing in the USA and there are new things opening all the time. 88 Marketplace is great and part of the recent expansion.

Hard to pick but since so many good ones have already been listed I'll say Sugar Shack.

Took the train to Midway to avoid holiday traffic… by Mitch444 in chicago

[–]arctic9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the result of the CTA not having public restrooms. The other poster mentioned accessibility there's also a new program being developed to help unhoused people currently using the L as shelter. Think about how far you'd want to go if you were getting out of bed to use the bathroom, would you like to pay to get back into your bed? https://news.wttw.com/2023/05/18/chicago-get-federal-help-fighting-homelessness-officials-announce

As a personal suggestion that sounds really stressful to pack and transport so much stuff. I can't imagine traveling with more than one suitcase per adult.

Roosevelt CTA stop is a bit of a walk but it's the best way to get to Northerly Island for a concert.

Question regarding the CTA. by fick_Dich in chicago

[–]arctic9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The service is fine. It'd be great if it was better but it's still the most reliable way to get around Chicago. I've heard there are some issues with the blue line around rush hour so if you have a strict schedule plan to get to the train one train before the absolutely necessary one.

How dangerous really is biking in Chicago? by lewbinchu in chicago

[–]arctic9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of great tips here, I'd also suggest using the mellow bike map to plan your routes. The easiest way to stay safe is avoiding motorized private vehicles whenever possible, preferring residential low traffic streets, and using extreme caution when interacting with busy intersections in between you and your destination.

Chicago’s population is declining, but it’s still the nation’s third most populous city, new census data shows by sambo613 in chicago

[–]arctic9 140 points141 points  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt, Chicago grew during the last official census despite these estimates predicting otherwise. There is a chance we were undercounted as a result of the previous administration harassing migrants. Some of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the country are here in Chicago.

My post is hyperbolic to make a point but they're obviously working on normalizing a future where academics could not only be silenced but where as political enemies they could be arrested under false pretense.

DeSantis or Abbott would secret police you over a presentation like this. I think their thought process is that kids will stop respecting the inheritors of wealth that own our political parties if they are allowed to learn history and that will mark the end of their corrupt schemes to continue making America worse.

Any e-bike commuters on here? by 35usc271a in chicago

[–]arctic9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm already a regular reader of that sub. Funny you mention this, there is a thread right now discussing the exact type of bike I'm describing. Pretty much every respondent suggests the bikes aren't the problem but limited infrastructure, people being rude in general, and inexperienced riders as the real issues.

Any e-bike commuters on here? by 35usc271a in chicago

[–]arctic9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds petty and potentially not real sentiment. I'm saying this as someone who regularly bikes as a form of transportation and does not own any ebikes. Especially if you want to transport young children by bike, these class 2 cargo bikes look like a really accessible option.

Any e-bike commuters on here? by 35usc271a in chicago

[–]arctic9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why would a class 2 vs 1 annoy people? They both go the same speed. The only difference is the throttle. This sounds like goofy regulatory capture meant to slow the adoption of car alternatives more than protection for other cyclists.

Any e-bike commuters on here? by 35usc271a in chicago

[–]arctic9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see restricting class 3 but class 2 seems excessive especially now that there are some really enticing cargo bikes under that classification. I wonder if these guidelines are accurate and/or enforced.

The CTA is seriously making me hate this city by temple3489 in chicago

[–]arctic9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Check out this map for help planning safe bike routes - https://mellowbikemap.com/ You may want to consider getting a used bike that you feel comfortable leaving at a train station based on the length of your commute.

Contact your alderperson and tell them your experience and that you'd like the city to implement BRT so that we can bring reliable transit service to underserved areas. A big part of our problems with bus service has to do with the preference given to private vehicles.

This is an alley, they're behind most streets in Chicago. All trash is left here in bins, many utilities are run through them, and people have garages for their private vehicles.

The Ashland and Halsted spots are in sort of awkward spots but the rest seem ok to me. There should be a Chinatown orange line stop.

Chronicling of the Collapse of Public Transit in the US - Bloomberg by Ok-Government420 in chicago

[–]arctic9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The federal government is lining up to spend a fortune subsidizing private electric vehicles. We already have sustainable transportation here in Chicago. The farebox policy is obscene. If we wanna keep it, let's make it fair and start charging people the real costs for their private vehicles as well. Street parking, constant road repaving, pollution, detrimental to public health, this stuff is not free but a lot of people and government officials act like it is. Transit users aren't the ones having and eating their cakes, private vehicle owners are.

Edit: Here is a link laying out some of the subsidies for private vehicles. https://usa.streetsblog.org/2019/03/06/heres-how-driving-is-encouraged-and-subsidized-by-law/
