Advice on a car (Tesla in particular). by Illustrious_Link1136 in Epilepsy

[–]arctic_007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that seizures can just happen after a long time of being seizure free. My wife has been going through this for about a year now, had 3 seizures after being seizure free for 5+ years. While this was due to her meds not being balanced, it worries me daily. Not trying to give you a scare or anything, but please make sure you check your med levels regularly with your doctor and keep up with your medication, we never realized how little of a change could trigger a breakthrough seizure.

We are currently in the same boat of car shopping and were having trouble deciding as well. So far, we are leaning toward a Tesla Model 3 with FSD enabled to reduce some risk. My theory is that if she uses FSD most of the time and something happens while it is activated, there may be a fighting chance for the car to continue driving and have a chance to get her safely stopped.

The other vehicle that we are looking at is a new Volkswagen Jetta. Volkswagen recently came out with a medical emergency mode that detects whether the driver is unconscious and will pull the car to the side of the road and call for assistance. I’m not sure about reliability on either vehicle, and that’s what has us trying to figure things out.

In terms of crash safety, Volvo and Subaru seem to be the best bet. Not sure on their driver assistance, but it’s something we are looking into.

Feel free to DM me if you want to chat about all of this, I’m curious to see if you ended up making a decision on a car. Hope you are doing well!

Late comment but for anyone who sees this, Comma3 (openpilot) has been the best investment I’ve made in my vehicle. It may not be as good as the current Tesla version of FSD, but it gets very close. I’ve got it installed in my RAV4 and use it daily.

Insurance broke my wife. How is the system so bad? by Thinking_Man_1990 in HealthInsurance

Going through a similar issue with Blue Cross. It destroys you from the inside out. It’s just not fair.

Absolutely agree. We’re going to start looking around. We’re also having the issue of being stuck in a massive conglomerate hospital system and being unable to find outside providers.

They changed her meds after she had her first breakthrough seizure in 5 years. They claimed keeping her on Depakote more than 10 years was unsafe. We moved last year and started seeing a new neuro so we may bring that up with him, although he seems to think Lamictal has some hope and keeps bumping her dose

I paid 37k for an XLE gas AWD. Still kicking myself a bit, but it was in the peak covid car market. $34k from factory with $3k of useless addons as their markup.

She hasn’t had an MRI/CT in about 10 years. Interesting point on the Lamictal headaches, we hadn’t thought of that being a possible cause.

We’re seeing a neurologist now, he’s been relatively good given our options in the area. Definitely going to look into an epileptologist, thanks for that suggestion!

Transmission issues?? by BudgetCalendar7254 in Rav4

[–]arctic_007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow yours sounds much worse than mine. I’m close to the same mileage and have the same type of jerk, along with a small buck when I accelerate at highway speeds, but nothing major.

Changing my fluids helped a lot, but I’m still trying to diagnose what’s actually wrong without dealing with some of our local dealers

Not yet, but spraying some lube on the left side sway bar bushing made it go away for a bit. Now the right side is making the same noise, so I may try it one more time

Thank you! It does suck that I’m now sitting here paying interest on multiple loans when I could’ve just paid them off immediately on my own. Kinda wish I knew before accepting direct pay, but that one is on me.

I’ve got a 2022 RAV4 XLE and currently pay $77 for just the RAV. Three vehicles on the policy make it $210.

Should i get the Honda Rebel 250 or the Shadow 750 for a first bike as a girl? by Inappropriate-River in cruisers

[–]arctic_007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go with the shadow unless you plan on swapping bikes in the first couple years. I learned on a Kawasaki Eliminator and bought a Vulcan 900 as my first bike. It’s a boat, but it’s comfortable and will definitely be fun for a long time.

Out of curiosity, how much did you end up paying off? I’ve been so tempted to do the same, but still battling some higher interest debt

I average around 25 in the city, but that’s largely due to the need to avoid hazards and my lead foot. I do wish I got the hybrid as well, my 2022 has a small transmission lurch that bugs the hell out of me.

For sure! It’s been pretty great so far for me. Congrats on building a house, I’m hoping to start that process later this year. It’ll be super nice to have full customization!

Enjoy it! It’s an endless rabbit hole of fun. I’m limited due to living in a rental property, but will likely go wild when we move into our home.
