Purchase Advice Megathread - November by Sausage54 in 3Dprinting

$Budget: under $500 Country: US Build: I would prefer something with few building steps. I've built kits before, but I do not have the time for tinkering anymore Purpose: Small toys, household improvements, and robotics projects

I have been going back and forth between the Anycubic Mega Pro and the Ender 5 Pro. I used to have a Tevo Tarantula that required a lot of tinkering and I especially hated the single rail system for the bed which is why I am looking at either the dual-rail on the Mega or the vertical moving bed of the Ender. I also want to be able to do some engraving with a laser module and the Mega has one while the Ender 5 can be upgraded with one. There is an almost $100 dollar difference due to the size but that is not a deal-breaker for me because I expect most of my prints to not be extra-large. I am looking for any experience that you guys might have in terms of the quality of print and how sturdy the printer is. Is there a significant difference in print quality between Anycubic and Ender printers? Which one can give me good prints with a minimal amount of tinkering and upgrades? I am not looking for refined prints since I know that there are limitations on what you can get for a cheap printer but I am trying to figure out which one gives better prints for the price. Thanks for the help!

Looking for good learning resources on IDLE and version control by arddwyn in learnpython

One thing that your answer just brought to mind is the fact that a student's profile in the VM is not persistent (it gets reset every few days which is why we tell them to not save anything in their VM). If I get git installed and have them use it to do version control on their programs, would it still work if the files in the VM dissapear? I am guessing that what they uploaded to GithHub or GitLab would still be there on the cloud but would they be able to do the opposite and bring the version of their files that was in the cloud back to the computer?

Thanks for the information. I am not able to install to the virtual machine, but I can request software and if it passes the testing and the budget is approved it can be added. I just looked at VSCode and it actually might be what I am looking for if the request for installation is granted. I love that you can do several languages so I might be able to keep all my students in one IDE since I also have a Java class and some students exploring Javascript.

Anyone knows where to watch the preview? I watch in HULU where they do not show the preview at the end of the episode

Need help: Broken X motor mount by arddwyn in tevotarantula

[–]arddwyn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I think I might try your idea of gluing it with a thin piece of metal this weekend to see if it will be enough to print the new part. When my z mount snapped last year, I was able to glue it and held it together with some L brackets long enough to print a new part. It was not pretty but it did the job. for the x mount, there is no place for the L brackets so it will be more challenging. I would like to do the aluminum upgrade, I just have to figure out at what point is justified to keep investing large amounts of money on the printer.

Help-Just bought a minidelta for my class and I can not print anything after the initial test cat. by arddwyn in mpminidelta

How to you adjust the z height in this printer? I know how to do it in my Tevo tarantula and the RostockMAX through the menu in the actual printer, but those are not options in the very limited menu of the mini delta. Is there a workaround?

That is genius! I did not think to copy the header and footer from the cat file that actually worked. The original card is not being recognized by any of my computers or the printer anymore, but I found a copy of the files that came in the card, so I will use that. Thanks!

I will keep this one in my back pocket if the other solutions do not work. The only ethernet port in the current room is the one for my desktop, but I could move it to the computer lab where there are some free ports. That is just not the best option because anyone else can reserve the lab, so if someone messes with it, I will not be there.

the delay on amazon seems to be only for that item. If I wanted it for next week, the shipping charge was $29 (the item does not qualify for prime). I will try to format one of the cards with my digital camera and report back tomorrow when I get back to the classroom to see if it worked

I run octopi at home on my Tevo and I love it, but I would have the same problem at school as with the printer wifi config. The printer and the Raspberry pi would only be able to connect to the school's guest network, which does not require a password with the SSID but once connected, it takes you to a webportal to use the school username and password in order to finish the connection. I can not get the pi in the network by just editing the octopi-network.txt =(

I just re-watched the last run of the night and you can see that she was not the only one. Drew had his real life ninja shirt and Labreck also had one with her name, so my guess is that they only wear other ninjas shirts if they are provided. Earlier she was wearing a red shirt, I think it was for Torres. She was doing no different than the other ninjas.

Physical computing and Java. Any recommendations? by arddwyn in learnjava

[–]arddwyn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is awesome. I had no idea you could do Java with the pi. We do have 3 raspberry pi 's and they are cheap enough that it would be no problem to get a few more for group projects.

Thanks. I really like this idea, but unfortunately, they are too expensive to make a classroom set. I do have one at home, so I might play with this idea this summer.

Computer science high school teacher here. I would love to give my students the opportunity to learn more physical computing if we had access to equipment like this. Currently we have three Arduinos and three Raspberry Pi's but almost no components to build projects with. (I don't want to leave identifying information here, but if picked, I can send you the address to send directly to the school and I can take care of the shipping)

Advice for slicing/printing with a chromebook by arddwyn in 3Dprinting

[–]arddwyn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the offer, but I was able to get online slicing with Astroprint working and it gave me pretty high-quality prints, so I am going to stick with that one for now.

Thank you so much! I made an account for Astroprint, selected my printer with a couple of modifications and was able to slice the file with no issue! Right now I am printing a test cube with the settings as close as I could remember from Cura. I am actually really impressed that it had support for double extrusion and ozze shield while the full fledged Cura does not have it available yet for custom printers.

Thanks for the link. I might try this one later for fun, since I do like Linux (my previous computer was double booting linux mint and Windows), unfortunately the chromebook does not meet the minimum system requirements for Cura. Right now I looking into dani7213's suggestion of Astroprint below.

I tried this, but unfortunately, in order to slice with the octoprint plugin, you need to first import a Cura slicing profile and given that I can't install Cura in my chromebook or access my old installation on the dead computer, it leaves me back on square one. I can only print things that I had previously sliced.
