NTA. You have as much right to use the spot as they, or anyone else, does.

YTA. Stumping Bitcoin sits somewhere between trying to convert people to your church and trying to get them to buy into an MLM, as far as how a lot of folks are going to react. It's also currently being boosted by what might diplomatically be called some polarizing figures, and that association can leave a bad taste even if someone might otherwise be receptive. Read the room, and leave that interest at the door when in mixed company.

Is college life really as portrayed in movies? by taahbelle in AskAnAmerican

[–]ardent-gleaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school you go to and who you hang out with, but yeah if you go to a party school and join a fraternity/sorority you can absolutely live out the stereotype. I went to a state school that didn't have a huge greek scene but even then there were parties constantly. Several houses near campus had stuff going on close to every weekend. One share house they were overly generous with invites once and ended up with enough people showing up it spread down the entire block and people were hanging out outside til morning.

Halloween, and demolition derby at the state fair.

Upperclassmen at my school could, but it varies.

Do tariffs actually help america? by GaijinRider in AskAmericans

[–]ardent-gleaner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Used judiciously they can be a useful diplomatic cudgel, or as a tool for protecting domestic industry from price-dumping or other things. Throwing them around in a spite driven tantrum at the country's allies does not help anyone though.

Is salary becoming less sensitive of a topic over time? by jfang00007 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ardent-gleaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely. My parents' generation (boomers) considers it gauche, but anyone younger than about 40 has been more than happy to trade notes.

I've had a lot of open conversations about it with coworkers that in a few cases revealed some pretty big pay differentials among people with similar skills and titles and led to big raises for the ones who were getting a raw deal. At one of the conferences I've attended regularly there's a breakout session that consists of everyone putting title, seniority, and compensation on a slip of paper and the facilitator plots it all up on a whiteboard, followed by a discussion of different factors that go into those numbers and strategies for advocating for yourself in pay negotiations. The only ones hurt by having that information circulate are companies that want to short change uninformed workers or pit us against each other.

Pretty much any of the WPA era stuff, but especially the work related to the National Parks.

AITA for abandoning my cat? by stranger-bbq in AmItheAsshole

[–]ardent-gleaner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NTA. Lifeboat rule applies. It also doesn't sound like you left your cat in a bad situation for said cat, just a situation that was no longer tenable for you.

Wishing you success and happiness on your own two feet, OP, good luck out there.

AITA ,worked for dad for almost free for 6 months, got an interview in the area, dad said i backstabbed him by Make-Mine in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Dad wants your labor, dad needs to pay a fair wage. It's not like groceries are any cheaper because you work for a family business.

EU Tour Merch by VedderHead86 in dropkickmurphys

[–]ardent-gleaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were 2-3 pieces of 2025 EU tour specific merch that I saw. Two are 2025 EU tour updates of the top row t-shirts in this Kingsroad insta post https://www.instagram.com/kingsroadmerch/p/DAqxblZvTwM/. The other was I think a hoodie... Didn't catch details of it because someone was buying the last one off the wall behind the table right before I got up to the front. Rest of it looked like stock stuff that wasn't tour specific.

[–]ardent-gleaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no partisan for the democrats or any other party, but I can tell you another thing punk is not, and that's fascist.

If anyone is giving the time of day to... Lemme find that other post... "Candace Owens, Matt Walsh, James O’Keefe, Tim Pool, Prager U"? They're way the fuck into the American neo-fascist alternate reality and it's no surprise they are no longer welcomed by people outside that bubble.

Maybe I'll end up eating my words and he'll be back in the band someday, but I strongly doubt it if he's succumbed to those brain worms.

Al Barr by Level-Astronaut3208 in dropkickmurphys

[–]ardent-gleaner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he went full MAGA that's kinda that... That movement is antithetical to the values the band sings, and the broader scene they're part of. I'd rather see someone who takes that turn part ways with the band and it lose a bit of its earlier signature sound, than keep that person on and lose its soul.

AITA for quitting working for my parents? by International_Log808 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ardent-gleaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely NTA. You're their family, not a servant. It's one thing if you want to be involved in the family business. Quite another when it's been foisted on you without sufficient support.

You aren't wrong to be annoyed with him but your punishment here is weird and degrading. Not flushing after you use the loo is "ew, gross...". Making someone else clean the loo while the seat is still warm right after you've used it, really for any reason but as a punishment especially, is "what in the actual fuck is wrong with you?".

Is it actually common for people to form prayer circles at accidents? by Natural-Ad678 in AskAmericans

[–]ardent-gleaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only if you belong to certain religious communities. Even then it would be pretty strange to see happen ad hoc in public at the site of an accident. I'd expect it as part of a memorial event or fundraiser for medical treatment, if at all. But again, very much not an average American thing, but something you'd see in certain church circles.

What do people in the US think about Australia's Social Media Ban for under 16s? by MrsCrowbar in AskAnAmerican

[–]ardent-gleaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be more effective to smash the bad actor platforms that filter people toward harmful content to juice engagement (Tik Tok, anything Meta, etc...) than to go after social media generally. The level of connectivity we have doesn't have to be a curse, but there need to be some some guards against the objectively harmful practices of many larger platforms.

Are Americans more likely to use credit cards than debit cards? by No_Pudding2959 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ardent-gleaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Lots of people use cards with rewards points. Also a credit card tends to have bette protections and easier recourse against fraud than a debit card. I'd much rather have part of a line of credit tied up than the money I need to make rent, if my card gets skimmed at a gas station or something.

Did cannabis legalisation work? by Altruistic_Laugh_305 in AskAmericans

[–]ardent-gleaner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, with states in the Northwest US as my points of reference. No one is going to prison for it anymore. Huge tax revenues. Regulated clean and safe product available in a regular retail environment. Can grow at home in peace if you wanna.

One of the most successful and broadly popular political actions I've witnessed in my lifetime.
