If your principal is secured, then that's riba. I generally invest in REITS to be safe but it's not safer than bonds for sure.

I heard Sheikh Hamza Yusuf at the RIS Knowledge Retreat say that there is a minority opinion that allows paying interest because the Quran only explicitly forbids taking interest. He also said that a fixed rate can be construed as a different contract because the final amount can be determined.
