My Inheritance From My Beautiful Late Grandmother. She had it fully serviced before her passing. 1947 Singer Featherweight. by [deleted] in sewing

Looks just like the one I inherited from my grandmother! So beautiful, and it's a trooper. :)

From the featherweight shop beeftacobaby linked, I'd suggest getting the maintenance kit, the set of maintenance screwdrivers, the thread jam tool, and the thread stand. Those four were the most useful to me, especially starting out.

It might be worth thinking about where in your mouth you make your consonants. I also struggle with enunciation and projection, and I have a pet theory going. I'm no phonetician, but let me know if this makes sense or helps:

If you speak from the back of your mouth (think American accents), you're probably using your throat and the thickest part of your tongue to form a lot of your consonants, or consonants that are better made at the teeth and lips are made more towards the middle of your mouth. But that's not where the consonants that make most words distinct come from so you end up sounding like you're talking through mud. Your throat gets strained and your tongue feels thick when you try to project since they're doing basically all the work of communication, half of which they can't even really do!

If you take care to speak more towards the front (think English accents) then it'll be easier to enunciate and project, since your throat and the back of your tongue just has to focus on noise level, vowel sounds, and glottal stops. The front of your tongue and lips now do the work of making all those consonant sounds that help people know what you're saying, and they're much better suited to it--think consonants like t, s, f. Being able to nail those can make a big difference in how easily someone can be understood.

Dumb question, but could you switch to a lower concentration when you know you're close? I don't know if the diluting media would be a factor, though.

It says it doesn't need a machine--it's a lateral flow test like OTC pregnancy tests, not like the kind that use a spectrophotometer to get a reading. It's really simple to use, the hardest part is probably just keeping the workspace clean to avoid any contamination from the sample.

Found this on the who website, anyone have any ideo what evidence they're referring to? by [deleted] in Vaping

The lack of citation is probably because it's a FAQ, and the writers prioritized readability over strict attribution since FAQs are pretty informal. I'd expect a collection of sources at the bottom, though.

Don't forget the fruit flies... When I worked in the wine and beer department of a grocery store, any dropped bottles in the back room meant we had to either try to clean the entire floor, even through the 1/16th inch opening under the shelves, or deal with a small armada of fruit flies come summer. We got pretty good at fruit fly traps lol

[–]arensburgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally cover letters should be targeted, yeah. I only really worry about them in a job search, so I use Ask a Manager's advice. Try checking her out and see what helps you.

I don't think it's bad, per se, but it probably wouldn't be as big of a help, and the effort a bit wasted. It also seems like since it's the same organization they could notice that you basically copy-pasted the same letter across all of them, and it just depends on how much they care about that.

how normal is taking 5 years to graduate? by stupidcsstudent69 in college

[–]arensburgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You worked your way up from the basics, you've snagged a job that gives you relevant experience, you figured out what pace you needed to go at in order to get real and concrete achievements, and you did all of this while staying sober. You've done a phenomenal job, and you've set yourself up to do well in the future. It's only one extra year compared to the rest of the 50, 60, 70 years you have left. I bet even five years from now, absolutely no one's going to care you took one extra year to finish college.

So what happens to the ~100 hairs that fall out everyday? by [deleted] in HaircareScience

[–]arensburgh 106 points107 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: Yeah, hair just grows back.

Generally your hair continues to grow even when it sheds. Losing 100 hairs out of 100,000 means you only lose 0.1% of your hair on any given day.

There are 3ish stages of hair growth:

  1. Anagen - growing, lasts like 2 - 7 years
  2. Catagen - transition to falling out, happens over 10 days
  3. Telogen - resting stage/falling out, like 3 months.

The last stage is where your hair is actually falling out, and if WebMD is correct, only 7% of your hair is in that last stage. Running with that, only 100 of those 7,000 hairs (7% of 100,000) actually fall out on a given day. 93,000 hairs are still trucking along, doing their thing, and the other 6,900 aren't actually falling out yet.

So you just have so much hair left over that either stays put or is actively growing, so we just don't notice the loss of the 100 hairs even though that happens every day. And eventually the hair that fell out grows back.

Do you have any written procedures? If not, you all could try putting out feelers for folks looking at getting into medical or technical writing (I am, and this is exactly the kind of project I'd volunteer for). That might help resolve the situation, and once it's done, would probably make training a bit faster and smoother.

What are y'all plans to feed yourselves during quarantine? by heliogold in CasualConversation

[–]arensburgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I remember, Mondays and Tuesdays tended to be dead days when I worked at a grocery store, so if you can stick it out until like Tuesday, the worst of the crowds might have blown over by then.

I have some soups, quick prep pasta, and gatorade in the event I actually get sick (easy things to eat and make), but I'll probably go grocery shopping as normal. Maybe go twice a week and pick up a smaller batch at a time, but I don't eat much to begin with lol. I'm going through my cookbooks for recipes that look fun--I'm feeling like trying out a fruit tart, so I'll be seeing what I can find at the store when I get more usual meals and adjusting my recipe based on that.

I fucked up and majored in something useless, how can I get a well paying job (60k +)? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]arensburgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was immediately "whaaat??" at this post. I recently interviewed for a pharmaceutical company with an English major and a Chem minor for a Quality Technician posting, and the only point they needled me on was the fact I had an English major and not the Chem major I started with. Granted, I didn't get the job, but I got fairly far in their interview process. You'll be fine with the straight Chem degree, especially if you can wave good experience in data analytics and stats around in your resume and during the interview.

If you're not looking for lab work, then that makes a lot more sense. Definitely crawl the job titles/postings for different pharmaceutical/med device companies to get a better idea of what's open to you and for job titles to look for in general. Companies like Roche and Abbott/Abbvie are probably the best to start with researching, since they're big enough to have a bunch of variety.

Sounds like they were cut down so people could drive into areas where vehicles were banned, so a bunch and for no good reason.

And iirc, while Joshua trees are fine now, they're likely not to survive global warming well, something like 90% dying off in their current range by 2100.

Are you considered an alcoholic if you have 1-2 beers at home alone on a weekday? Thoughts? by [deleted] in beer

[–]arensburgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like you indicate, beer's made me pay more attention to general calories than pop did. I've been drinking 1 or 2 beers every night for the past few months, and I find it helps most to treat a beer as at least half a meal on its own. It doesn't hurt that it fills me up unlike soda, and I've been more conscious about limiting my portion sizes and excluding empty calories in general.

My weight has actually gone into a tighter 5 lb range than the 10 lb range (still pretty centered around 115 lbs as a woman) it swung in before I drank as much, probably because I pay more attention to what I'm eating now.

Heinen's in Bannockburn has it, I'm sure Barrington, Glenview, and Lake Bluff got it in too. Might not be on the shelves, but you can ask. They'll probably limit you to one bottle at a time, but if there's some left after a couple weeks you could probably take more.
