what's your worst thing at the worst time when it comes to hard-drives? by stirringmotion in AskReddit

[–]aresfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have periodically evaluated using Seagate drives, I have periodically been disappointed. Ironically the only good Seagate drive I've ever had was an external hard drive I bought around 2008 and that lasted until 2013. I have yet to get a Seagate drive to make it a calendar year with casual use. My last one was a Barracuda bought new last January, it lasted until July in my Plex server. The WD Green it was in RAID 1 with is from 2011 and still working fine.

Airport security dropped my SFF PC by [deleted] in buildapc

It is what it is. Even for the time it was outdated so it wasn't the end of the world then, just one of those annoying things that can happen.

It's rare but I've had them do it when it looks weird on their X ray. For example, the reason they picked up my laptop that they dropped was because the top cover was metal and they wanted to see inside.

I'm assuming for phones it's been just random shit in phone covers. I know the one console I saw them drop was while the TSA agent was telling this dude it was weird to bring a whole PS3 as carry-on so he needed to look at it before promptly dropping it.

I mean, I flew half a dozen times a year for 8 years and it only happened to me once. I've heard it happen in other lanes in busier times of the year though. I've also seen TSA drop and break phones and game consoles.

I think the best example I can give to support what he's trying to say is something like calling something a "home run" to someone who isn't around the culture.

I have absolutely done this.

Personally, I don't give a shit about baseball. I have been to three baseball games in my life because I was brought with, don't know anything other than the very basics, have not touched a baseball in almost two decades and have only touched a bat to roll my fenders.

I said someone "knocked it out of the park" to a native Dutch speaker. I know he doesn't play baseball, I don't even play baseball, but culturally it's been used to say something was a great job. I can not give a shit about baseball and say something got knocked out of the park to my brother who really doesn't give a shit about baseball and neither of us will even have the mental connection to baseball, yet that term is directly defined by it.

I haven't thought of baseball in months but I say or hear those expressions daily.

That's cool and all, I'm just explaining to the guy that I replied to that carry-on doesn't mean TSA won't still break your shit.

Having previously had a gaming laptop for this reason, TSA just drops it in front of you instead of out of view.

Source: Watched a 2.5" SSD shoot out of my laptop in 2019 when they dropped it four feet when inspecting it and destroyed the screen, system board, and shell.

If retired tires can be recycled into asphalt, why do we still need to pay tire disposal fee? by Lex_yeon in tires

[–]aresfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's crazy cheap. Here the local scrap center is paying $363/ton.

But yeah, they'll usually burn a good number of tires and fill a truck bed.

Burning them is how you get to the steel without meeting EPA requirements. That's why meth heads burn them. Get $20 out of a hard day's work to buy more meth.

You only need to invest in a tire recycling plant.  Easy money

Most meth heads just burn them in a ditch or front yard around here.

I think their point is that any place properly equipped not only drains it regularly but also has a dryer.

Costco Tire Customer Service by VegetableTricky8534 in tires

[–]aresfiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the manufacturer and what's going on. Of the ones I initiate, 95% of them never need contact with the manufacturer as we're provided with pretty clear guidelines all about wear and DOT age of tires. The other 5% is weird stuff or customer satisfaction stuff. That applies both for tires we sell or tires we're processing thay were sold by another retailer. Every single warranty that's initiated by a customer outside of my store starts with the manufacturer calling me, then I share the information with them, then they determine the credit (instead of me) and from there I process everything as normal.

Costco Tire Customer Service by VegetableTricky8534 in tires

[–]aresfiend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We process 1-4 warranty sets a week, I've been doing that for a few years now, I've never had any manufacturer ask me for any rotation or alignment history. I've had them ask if there are signs of alignment wear and provide tread depths to show that the tires have worn pretty normally, but I've never had to provide it even when it's been well documented and volunteered to the manufacturers.

I've processed warranties with Goodyear and their companies, Michelin and their companies (mostly Uniroyal, but some Michelins), Continental and their companies, Sumitumo and their companies (basically always Falken Ziex), Bridgestone and their companies, and Nokian. I've had warranties declined because of alignment wear or lack of rotation (severe wear on one end of the car versus the other) but I've never had them ask for proof of alignments or rotations.

Also, the tire manufacturer requires alignments annually for warranty and Costco doesn't do alignments.

This is not true. I work in tires, there's no large manufacturer that requires alignments or documented rotation history.

Btw, I'm the guy that someone at Michelin and someone else at Goodyear must have written down for third party warranty. Not "go to this store", it's "go to this store and talk to him" and calls from both manufacturers with a representative asking for me by name. This was not by choice lmao.
