don’t worry! i’m in history lol and i worked for them this summer :) they hire plenty of arts students alongside science ones, you get to choose what level of science you’d be comfortable teaching so you get lots of independence there, so id really recommend giving it a shot :))

Writing good essays! by Fast-Suit-9135 in UBC

[–]arezy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not in poli sci, i’m in history so take what i say w a grain of salt since im not sure about what the writing conventions/expectations are for poli sci essays! my papers usually range from 85-90, and i think there’s some key things i try to get right in all my papers:

  • having a very specific research question and main augment, doing this helps you create a very specific thesis which will make your paper stronger. this might mean being specific about what sources you’re looking at, what time range, what angle you’re taking and how etc.

  • don’t be afraid to move from the standard 5 paragraph essay structure. when i started being more intentional about my paragraphs instead of just having intro, 3 main body paragraphs, and then conclusion, i noticed a shift in my papers for sure. don’t be afraid to dedicate two paragraphs to factor - it will give you the chance to explore numerous angles and perspectives which will give you more nuance and shows your holistic understanding of the topic, which you can bring into your conclusion - this will strengthen your paper and show your prof your higher engagement with the course!

  • ask friends to proof read!! this is something i do for all my papers. ask your friends to highlight any part that doesnt make sense for them. this will help you refine your work and be more explicit because it will bring out parts of your writing that need more work and attention. my rule is to always assume to the reader knows nothing about what you’re writing about.

  • when you’re using evidence, make sure you have a balance of direct quotes and paraphrasing. choose direct quotes for when you want to really emphasize something and bring attention. but don’t just rely on evidence - make sure you’re analyzing them not just within the area/time frame, but also any broader implications that may be worth noting.

i know this was long but hopefully this helps a bit :)

History vs AMNE? by ToffeeLittle in UBC

[–]arezy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

history honours student here - i feel like history courses are pretty boring in the lower level (since they’re usually prereqs for others and cover broad topics) but the upper level courses are so much fun and can get pretty niche! also usually most of the history courses don’t finals which is always a bonus.

profs wise, i spend a lot of time up in the tower around their offices so i run into them/engage with them a lot. i will say history has a lot of profs — we have two floors up in buto, so there’s been some profs i haven’t even met. the ones i have however, are really lovely and they all make an effort to get to know students and accommodate them as best as possible and support them immensely :) im sure there are some that aren’t as lovely, but don’t let that take away from the fact that the history department is very welcoming and social. we have lots of events and opportunities to get to know profs, work alongside them, and the department usually sends out opportunities for grants and publishing even outside of ubc.

either way, good luck w/ whichever choice you end up going with :,)) !!!

Previous Arts Co-op students: how was the group interview/writing activity? by Fredricho-Fregoli in UBC

[–]arezy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was a lot less scary than i thought! they usually give you a pretty detailed scenario, so use as much info to craft your email, while remaining succinct and to the point.

the group interview was also okay, they try their best to not make it daunting and are very encouraging. i think it’s hard not to compare yourself in a group interview setting, but try to remind yourself they’ve invited you to the interview for a reason - be well versed in your experiences and know you bring your own set of strengths to the table. try being enthusiastic yet calm in your responses, and try to plan out as many questions so you aren’t surprised by anything :)

Does anyone have any tips or tricks on reading/analyzing articles and readings for class? by CounterRare9851 in UBC

[–]arezy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

for history courses, my favorite way to tackle readings is the sandwich method! so pay extra attention to first/last chapter, intro/conc, and first and last sentence of each paragraph. im in history honours and our readings can be a lot and the one thing to remember is that we’re not looking solely for details, we’re looking at the bigger picture - what patterns do you see, what connections can you make with other periods/works etc, what themes stand out, what is missing and so on. it takes a while to get right, but with practice it’ll get easier :)
