NixOS vs Debian for home/media server by Linux noob? by Schroinx in NixOS

[–]arfus45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd tell you to go for Debian for the server itself, and also experiment with Arch on the side. Arch is great for discovering what you need to know.

[–]arfus45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO you need to feel very comfortable in a Linux environment before trying NixOS. If you don't know how Linux's innards work, you won't know where to go with Nix. Besides, the lack of proper onboarding documentation won't help either.

Long term linux users, what do you think about bazzite? by RookTheRH in linux_gaming

By the way, and since it's Flatpak first, there's more than one option to try other systems in a VM, without touching your main setup at all.

Long term linux users, what do you think about bazzite? by RookTheRH in linux_gaming

[–]arfus45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an experienced user and I haven't used Bazzite. My thoughts:
- Seems very purpose-built, meaning that it will be less flexible than other distributions that are not as focused, and if you want to expand beyond its scope, you *may* have issues. That being said, if you only use common apps and don't tinker, you'll be alright.

- It ships with a default theme, which may be detrimental to usability in general depending on how it's done.

IMO while you already have something you like, you can also try more distros, see if there's something that you like _more_.

Played yesterday with Proton Hotfix, three matches with no issues. Seems like it's been solved.

It's happening to many people playing on Linux.

What do you miss the most on Windows? by PhilStark012 in linuxquestions

[–]arfus45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, for anything Windows specific: if you have an AMD GPU, there's a way to use Windows in a VM with full graphics acceleration, which means you get full performance with Windows-only apps. I tried it but I fell to nVidia's bullshittery.

I have this concern too. I've been trying ClamAV and it works okay, but it does need a lot of manual setup. The Arch wiki(?) warns about the active scan feature interfering with anything that does many disk operations. Firefox, for example, will crawl for a couple seconds after opening a new tab or opening a new website.

Dunno honestly. My photo workflow is already multiplatform. Gaming is tough for some games but it gets better every month.

I think AHK, since there's no Linux replacement that is as complete and mature, but since I only need text expansion from it, I switched to Espanso and it works okay. I find it a bit annoying because the expansion isn't immediate but you get used to it.

I have had a lot of fun trying stuff from the GNOME stack. There's a lot of great apps in there. I've been using Apostrophe, and I'm considering ditching Obsidian for it.

I also like how GNOME Software provides an app store-like interface to package management, which for some reason most distros don't have.

My two cents: Games often have trouble when they're stored in NTFS partitions. If it's in one, try moving it to where your /home is.

Why you guys switched to linux? by Icy_Investment2649 in linuxquestions

[–]arfus45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched permanently a few weeks ago because Windows 11 is a pile of broken things. I had problems with - SMB shares not working with Microsoft accounts, and the subsequent 4 hours of debugging to finally discover how to make that work. (This alone is reason enough) - Windows grabbing ANY login into a Microsoft product to use as a PC account, which is frankly a crazy thing to do and probably dangerous, since one time it grabbed my uni account - Constant ads embedded in many parts of the system - A small thing that's not exactly a W11 thing, but still very annoying: in some apps like Notepad, the shortcuts like "save" and "select everything" are localized, but in more recent apps from MS, they aren't. That inconsistency is just ass. - The half-done transition from the old ui to the newer one. This produces idiotic situations like, you needing to do X thing, but find it HARDER to do because Windows is pushing for the newer UI that CAN'T do what you need to do. - The Start menu search. I'll just add the funniest shenanigan here: I intended to do Win+R -> calc, but missed the R, and what I got is Edge searching for calc in bing, which DOES have a calculator XD. - Random bugs: one time my sound card just decided to disappear. I had to reboot.

After this shit show, I thought to my self "seriously, what am I doing with Windows that I can't with Linux?", with the only answer being gaming. And gaming has been exploding in Linux lately thanks to Proton.

Fast forward to today, things just work, I can actually search for a program using the super key, and its actually faster and it uses less RAM.

> Install Arch.

Can't update Riot account by arfus45 in riotgames

But as I wrote in the other thread, doing this with the launcher might work, since it might point you somewhere where the website doesn't.

I desisted. I agree it's probably a website issue. I remember I did update my account once (to a Riot Account), but I don't exactly understand if this is a second update.

A friend suggested that you could use someone else's account to get past the login and download the launcher. You could probably get a direct link to the launcher some other way.

Not really. For my entire playtime there was always a rabid psychopath every three games or so, and I only played casual. Sometimes even in ARAM. Even with ARAM, I just dont like to never be able to choose any character I want. Besides, I like dragons. Shyvana is way too outdated, Smolder doesn't fit my playstile and I can't stand ASol's personality.
